Anything under 20 is "too young" in my book. Under 25 is a bit unusual, but whatever. You do you.

I disagree. In the US, at least, teens and young adults face a very real consequence of being kicked out of the house and disowned if they are not religious. That's my biggest concern.

And kids can get kicked out of their house for drinking, doing bad in school, or having a boyfriend too. Whats your point?
Um, because those are bad things to do [mostly]. Not sharing the beliefs of your family is entirely inconsequential to them. You can't force someone to believe something, especially something like faith-based religion. Not to mention kicking out your own child isn't exactly Christ-like, either.

But if someone looks at it, you're getting sight raped.

Are you just saying random words now?

Because the internet is a safe place. Many atheists face real-world consequences if their friends, family, coworkers/boss find out that they are not religious.

Jesus Christ. This isn't the 1950's. With the amount of liberal media and blood thirsty lawyers these days, if you get fired for being an Atheist, you can sue to be a millionaire. Stop it.
It's true, though. And the employer will cover their ass and fire your for some other reason.

The constant discussion, mockery, and seeming disdain of it gives the impression. I've seen it from several people here and I really just don't get it.
I'll take a stab.

Because the internet is a safe place. Many atheists face real-world consequences if their friends, family, coworkers/boss find out that they are not religious. So when they come on the internet, they can vent their frustrations without the consequence of losing friends, being kicked out or disowned by family, or losing their job.

Now, let's remember that disagreement and criticism isn't the same as mockery and disdain. As an outsider, a lot of religious beliefs are really outlandish and absurd to people who don't follow the religion. It's natural to question those things.

Serious / Re: Thoughts about abortion?
« on: October 13, 2014, 10:07:02 AM »
Regardless of one's ethical stance on abortion, it's absolutely paramount that it remain medically sound and legalised for the health and well being of the woman. Criminalising abortion only leads to malpractice and an increase in mortality/morbidity rates amongst pregnant women attempting to undertake abortions without the aid of a medical professional. Even if you do find it morally reprehensible, it's pretty much the lesser of two evils at this point.
I'm very hesitant that illegal clinics will spurt up everywhere. Show me numbers of the current illegal abortions being conducted and I'll think differently but I feel that's just as much of a valid argument as voter IDs are necessary to reduce voter fraud
I never said "illegal clinics" so I would very much appreciate you not putting words in my mouth. By malpractice and illegal abortions I was more thinking along the lines of a coat hanger or a quick nudge down the stairs, since you know, medically sound abortions would be pretty much unavailable under a criminalised abortion system.

It's pretty hard to gauge the statistics of 'illegal' abortions since by and large, abortions are legal and easily accessible in the Western World. But if you're referring to third world shitholes, they're extremely rampant, because FUNNILY enough, abortion is heavily penalised. Africa in particular has 420,000 unsafe abortions according to WHO. Unaccessibility to contraceptives also doesn't help.
With what's going on in Texas, it wouldn't surprise me if we saw [however it may be measured] an increased number of people using unsafe abortion methods. There's something like 4-6 clinics in the entire state.

And for the record I agree completely with evolution. Just saying its kind of fracked up to dismiss someones opinion by saying "LOL THIS IS SERIOUS LOL"
I was saying "this is Serious" as in "this is not the place for trolly comments." You know, those big "Serious" letters at the top of the page...

This is Serious. No need for that bullshit here.
It's called a "theory" for a reason. Can't say that's not serious when it's in the name.
Actually it's already been proven fact.
Shhh. They don't like to hear that.

Of course he did...

Whatever. Brilliant counterargument, yo.
There's no point in having this discussion if you're going to deny how the scientific process works and you insist on equating a scientific theory with a layman's theory and conjecture. Don't bother.
I never said that evolution was a layman's theory or conjecture. Just that, from a scientific standpoint, we don't even know 100% if it's true. And that since it's not proven inherently, people who don't believe in it have every logical reason not to.

Obviously you don't understand the foundation of evidence and research that supports a theory.

Again, don't bother.
If you don't want to seriously argue towards your illogical thinking, then there's not much I can do for you.
Ok, guy.

People who are unwilling or unable to care for a child should not be forced to have it.

1 - giving birth isn't free nor easy.
2 - adoption is okay, but there's tons of unadopted kids already in the system. Adding to it isn't a great idea

Yep, Cheat announced it yesterday. Something to do with advertisers.
