Serious / Re: Vote all you want, the secret government won't change
« on: October 20, 2014, 01:17:51 PM »
Voting does not matter and has not for quite a while.
Voting matters on state/local issues that affect you more directly.

It's true. Local issues like your city council, taxes, etc, have more of a direct affect on you than national things.

This is true. But the voting part isn't. Fucking hell is it ever pointless. Always has been, always will be.
Your vote carries a lot more weight on local issues. It's hardly pointless.

Tell that to all the bullshit changes and regulations made in this town by the governing body in the area that my one little vote didn't stop.
While it may be disheartening that your vote isn't directly reflected by your city's moves, that doesn't mean your vote doesn't count. I don't like it when local ballot measures fail when I voted for them, or vice versa.

Why are you people all so "pro blood donation"? I bet you're all organ donors too.
Why wouldn't you be an organ donor? It's not like I need them if I'm dead.

What do you think of it?
Do you believe it's real?
Of course it's real. Love is a great thing.

Well, I *would* suggest raising taxes to pay for maintenance and improvements, but then I'm a socialist commie bastard for wanting more taxes.

I don't have an iphone.
Plenty of people here don't and still posted their phone wallpaper.
I have a shit blackberry. Can't even upload pictures.

Fair enough. Blackberries aren't bad though.
I maintain that my Blackberry Curve was one of my favorite phones I've ever owned...and I've had about a dozen since then.

It's a great phone and a good price, but the way OnePlus handled the invite system and other PR stunts for their phone made me not want to deal with them. If it wasn't a game of chance to get a phone directly from them, I would get one.
What other PR stunts are you talking about?

I don't like the invite system either, but I have to admit that it could prove to be some great marketing strategies.
They did a Smash Your Old Phone contest, Instagram contest, and a "ladies only" picture contest. The first and last being the most controversial, and pretty off-putting to a consumer like me.

How do you get the ability to upload a custom nameplate?
Get 3000 posts.
That is all.
Or you can be Cheat's cousin and have privileges that the other people below that post count don't have.
For real...

Serious / Re: Car folks: first car purchase advise
« on: October 20, 2014, 11:27:18 AM »
A couple of you mentioned the Civic. I've driven a Civic (albeit a lease and one without many features) for several hundred miles and found it very uncomfortable. The seat sat too low, the windows and mirrors made it difficult to see around the rear of the car, and the trunk was too small.

I do a lot of outdoorsy stuff like diving, biking, and hiking, so I really like being able to pack a bunch of gear. I'd even be down for a truck, though the poor gas mileage turns me off to them.
If you're looking for storage space, especially for outdoorsy stuff, you might want to consider something like a Toyota RAV4, Honda CRV, or similar smaller SUV.

1. What budget should I shoot for?
I'd say under $7500

Quote
2. Any manufacturers that I should avoid?
Pretty much any american sedan from 1998-2005. That was a rough time for the American car industry. The Honda Civic, Accord, and Toyota Carrolla, and Camry are always great cars.

3. Lease vs. buying?
Buy. Paying all cash is preferable, but a cheap auto loan through your bank/credit union wont be too bad. I paid $12,000 for my 2007 A3 with no money down, and my monthly payments are around $200.

I'm not sure what situation makes leasing more attractive. Maybe when you're older and want a new Lexus every few years?

Anyone who doesn't support legalized or at least decriminalized marijuana use is honestly pretty deluded.
My single hang-up about full legalization is public intoxication and driving under the influence. There's no field test for measuring one's level of marijuana intoxication, nor does it effect people on a relatively-linear scale like alcohol does.

Until we hammer out a way to test for that, I'm hesitant to support full legalization. Decriminalization, yes.

I don't see why people are bent out of shape about win8/8.1. It's a great OS with some great under-the-hood improvements over win7.

I've been using 8 and 8.1 since they came out.
The metro / tile UI is absolutely horrendous imo.
But you don't have to use it. You just click on "desktop" and it's basically the same as win7

Under this law what counts as "cyberbullying"?  As far I know just being an asshole should be far from a prosecutable offense, harassment on the other hand. . .
If closing your browser or hitting "block/mute" solves your problem, it isn't cyberbullying.
