Not saying the punch was justified, but sometimes you can't just shut up a screaming child at the flip of the switch. The majority of the time you just have to ignore their behaviour, which a lot of people don't seem to understand.
And if that's the case, you should remove yourself and your child from the store. Anyone else making a scene would be asked to leave just the same.

Both my parents came from really poor families. My dad's family struggled, but made due. My mom's family was evicted from a variety of different homes, apartments, etc. Her dad was a drunk and blew all the money on booze, and then his girlfriend [note: not my mom's mom] shot him in the back and killed him less than a week before I was born.

"She came to the side of me and told me not to tell her child what to do. And I told her that I didn’t ask your child what to do, I asked you very nicely to calm down your child just a little bit,” Hajek-Richardson recalled.
Hajek-Richardson said she then told the mom off. “I told her to go to hell and she told me I’ll see you there,” she said.
When Hajek-Richardson left the store, she said the mom followed her to her car. “Was asking me, ‘Where’d you tell me to go?’ So I repeated again what I said to her, and I told her that I told her to go to hell,” she said.
