Serious / Obama: Classify internet as a utility
« on: November 10, 2014, 01:33:08 PM »
http://www.theverge.com/2014/11/10/7185933/fcc-should-reclassify-internet-as-utility-obama-says

Quote
President Obama has come out in support of reclassifying internet service as a utility, a move that would allow the Federal Communications Commission to enforce more robust regulations and protect net neutrality. "To put these protections in place, I'm asking the FCC to reclassifying internet service under Title II of a law known as the Telecommunications Act," Obama says in a statement this morning. "In plain English, I'm asking [the FCC] to recognize that for most Americans, the internet has become an essential part of everyday communication and everyday life."

There's been a growing battle around protecting net neutrality — the principle that all internet traffic, no matter what it is or where it comes from, should be treated equally — ever since the FCC's original protections were struck down in court earlier this year. Those protections were able to be struck down because the commission didn't make the rules in a way that it actually had authority over, so it's been trying to create new rules that it will definitely be able to enforce. It hasn't chosen to use Title II so far, but net neutrality advocates, now including President Obama, have been pushing for its use.

Regulating internet service under Title II would mean reclassifying it as a utility, like water. This means that internet providers would just be pumping internet back and forth through pipes and not actually making any decisions about where the internet goes. For the most part, that's a controversial idea in the eyes of service providers alone. It means that they're losing some control over what they sell, and that they can't favor certain services to benefit their own business. Instead, providers would be stuck allowing consumers to use the internet as they want to, using whatever services they like without any penalty. If that sounds pretty great, it's because that's basically how the internet has worked up until now.

You'll probably encounter sms problems because of the way Apple handles iMessage, and you need a tool to fix it.

Serious / Pope excommunicates pedophile priest

Baby steps, but good news!

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Pope Francis has excommunicated a pedophile Argentine priest, a move applauded by advocates for victims of clerical abuse.
Jose Mercau was sentenced to 14 years in prison in 2011 after admitting to sexually abusing four teenagers. He spent 15 days in jail and was then held in a monastery in Buenos Aires province until he was released last March.
The pope's decision was made public Wednesday by the bishopric of San Isidro on the outskirts of the Argentine capital.
Many welcomed the news, but victims and advocates of clergy sex abuse said the Roman Catholic Church still needs to be more determined, effective and severe when it comes to punishing such crimes in Argentina.
"The church still has a long way to go," said Sebastian Cuattromo, director of an advocacy group called Adultxs for the Rights of Infancy.
The policies of Pope Francis "are being carried out because of the long fight by the victims," said Cuattromo, who was sexually abused by a priest in Buenos Aires at age 13.

Serious / Mom attacks woman over screaming child

Quote
A shopper at a Colma store said she was punched in the face by mother after telling her to quiet down her child, who was throwing a tantrum.
Natalie Bree Hajek-Richardson told KPIX 5 that she was in the checkout line of the Nordstrom Rack when a child between the age of 4 and 6 began throwing a loud tantrum.
“It didn’t bother me that the child was throwing the tantrum, but the volume was very loud, it was hurting my ears,” Hajek-Richardson said.
The shopper said she asked the child’s mother to quiet the child down, but nicely. That’s when things began going sideways.
"She came to the side of me and told me not to tell her child what to do. And I told her that I didn’t ask your child what to do, I asked you very nicely to calm down your child just a little bit,” Hajek-Richardson recalled.
Hajek-Richardson said she then told the mom off. “I told her to go to hell and she told me I’ll see you there,” she said.
When Hajek-Richardson left the store, she said the mom followed her to her car. “Was asking me, ‘Where’d you tell me to go?’ So I repeated again what I said to her, and I told her that I told her to go to hell,” she said.
Video shows a woman in a red shirt walking toward Hajek-Richardson before they both end up on the asphalt. The victim said she was punched twice in the face.

The Flood / Max's awkward moment
« on: November 07, 2014, 01:50:02 PM »
Story time.

This took place around Christmas 2011. I was at a friend's Christmas party at their house. A mutual friend, who none of us see too often, arrived with a very attractive girl. Because we were all a few years younger, we partied a bit harder and drank a bit more.

As the night went on, I had been chatting up the attractive young lady who arrived with my friend. She was really cool. Tattoos, worked in the music industry, enjoyed waxing philosophical. She hadn't been drinking that night since she was driving, unlike myself who was in a rather drunken state.

Because of my increased intoxication, I totally blanked when she left and I didn't ask for her number. Realizing this upon my return home, I tracked her down on facebook and shot her a message about how I enjoyed spending the evening with her and I'd really like to see her again.

Well, unbeknownst to me, she had been dating the guy she showed up with for a few weeks, as she indicated in her reply to my message. At no point did anyone think to mention this earlier in the night. What the fuck.

They're still together, years later, and I always think of this whenever I see them. Thankfully, it's still pretty infrequently that we actually hang out.

Serious / Denying a problem exists
« on: November 07, 2014, 12:36:25 PM »

There may be a scientific answer for why conservatives and liberals disagree so vehemently over the existence of issues like climate change and specific types of crime.

A new study from Duke University finds that people will evaluate scientific evidence based on whether they view its policy implications as politically desirable. If they don't, then they tend to deny the problem even exists.

“Logically, the proposed solution to a problem, such as an increase in government regulation or an extension of the free market, should not influence one’s belief in the problem. However, we find it does,” said co-author Troy Campbell, a Ph.D. candidate at Duke's Fuqua School of Business. “The cure can be more immediately threatening than the problem.”

The study, "Solution Aversion: On the Relation Between Ideology and Motivated Disbelief," appears in the November issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (viewable at http://psycnet.apa.org/journals/psp/107/5/809/).

The researchers conducted three experiments (with samples ranging from 120 to 188 participants) on three different issues -- climate change, air pollution that harms lungs, and crime.

Serious / The Duggars are fucking scary

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/11/the-duggars-arent-just-kooky-they-are-a-serious-political-threat-to-gay-rights-and-womens-rights/

I'm surprised this is still a TV show
Quote
And once a Duggar girl is married, says Mom, she is never allowed to say no to sex. “Duggar women don’t get headaches,” Michelle told us. “You always need to be available when he calls.” And if you’re not always available—if you do get a headache, or you’re just not in the mood one night, or if turns out that your husband prefers Dad’s auditions—then you’re to blame when your husband cheats on you.
[...]
And because you are not allowed to use birth control, that means that you have literally no say whatsoever in your reproductive life. You are, quite literally, not a person, but simply a tool for which a man relieves himself sexually and an oven in which he bakes his offspring. Your opinion on the matter is of no more value than a refrigerator’s opinion on what food you store in it.
[...]
This double standard that conservatives are pushing, where religious fanatics like the Duggars get to say and do whatever they want to interfere with our sex lives but we are not supposed to even make jokes about their unhealthy, misogynist ideals is more than just culture war posturing, though.  The Duggars are useful as a political tool for the right. They are held up as an ideal by right wingers because they make an excellent cudgel to beat women with. They help instill the idea that it’s normal and okay to demand that women relinquish 100% of their sexual and reproductive autonomy, and therefore the usual conservative demands that we just lose, oh, 50% of our basic autonomy sound more reasonable in comparison.

Holy shit.

But all those attempts to reduce your carbon footprint might be for naught if you decide to have kids.

A 2009 University of Oregon study found that having children obliterates any emission reductions from altered behavior, like driving less and using energy-efficient light bulbs. The average American is responsible for 20 tons of carbon dioxide per year. MIT researchers discovered that even the lowest-consuming Americans (young children and homeless people, according to researchers) generated an average of 8.5 tons of CO2 per year, more than double the global average.

Population specialists agree that just a half-child-per-woman decrease in the global fertility rate could bring global population back to 6 billion by the end of the century (we’re at 7 billion, hurtling toward 9 billion at current fertility rates). And half a child in the other direction could take us to 16 billion in the same time frame, which would be catastrophic, according to many. As Alan Weisman puts it in his bestseller, Countdown, “We would never get there, because we would collapse over multiple thresholds first, possibly never to crawl back.”
