This weekend, I was at the bowling alley with some of my softball team. When you rent bowling shoes from the alley, you usually give them one or both of your shoes so you don't walk away with their rentals. So I graciously handed over my beloved Converse.
But upon returning to the counter at the end of the night, a terrible thing happened. As the guy behind the counter went to retrieve my shoes, he couldn't find them, because surely the black Converse with the pink tongue certainly couldn't be mine.
Sheepishly, he holds up one of my shoes. "uh....are these yours?" he oppressively asked.
"Yup" I replied, and walked away.
The nerve of him...

That moment when even hardcore evangelists like Pat Robertson admit that being gay isn't a choice and traits will be weeded out by natural selection. Of course, he didn't mean to do that. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/12/what-pat-robertson-predicts-gays-will-go-extinct-because-they-dont-reproduce/Christian Broadcasting Network host Pat Robertson on Wednesday predicted that gay men and lesbians would eventually “die out because they don’t reproduce.”
On Wednesday’s 700 Club, a woman named Crystal complained that her church had banned dating, and it considered showing interest in the opposite sex a “sin.” She said that the only married members of the church were people who had met their spouses before joining.
According to Robertson, this church faced the same threat as the LGBT community: extinction.
“You know, those who are homosexual will die out because they don’t reproduce,” the TV preacher opined. “You know, you have to have heterosexual sex to reproduce.”
“Same thing with that church, it’s doomed, it’s going to die out because it’s the most nonsensical thing I’ve heard in a long time.”
Robertson advised Crystal to “run” from her church, but he did not explain how LGBT people could “die out” if they continued to be born to heterosexual parents. lol

...that we've stopped talking about the CIA and torture now that Cuba and North Korea are dominating the news cycles?
Funny how that works...

AKA "NO FUN ALLOWED!!" http://millionairecarclub.com/cars-and-coffee-irvine-shut-down/Cars and Coffee Irvine has been ordered to shut down. Cars and Coffee Irvine is a ritual amongst Southern California car enthusiasts. This event that attracts exotic and unique car owners, car clubs and manufacturers from around the globe to show off their goods is practically a California car culture institution.
Cars and Coffee Irvine came to be in October of 2006 and has been growing strong since. The meet was an evolution of a gathering of car enthusiasts getting together at crystal cove in Orange County California. Rumor has it that there were noise complaints from the owners of a hotel and apartments that are under construction next door. The organizers of C&C Irvine have been asking car owners to “keep their revs low” this entire year and there has been as consistent police presence outside the event to discourage burnouts. These measures did not stop the occasional showboater who thought it would be cool to light up his tires. To make matters worse, the crowd that stands by the exits, eggs drivers on when they do not see the police. The event is held in a lot that is adjacent to office buildings occupied by Taco Bell, Mazda, and Ford. There is speculation that the Irvine Company, which owns the nearby residential construction project is behind the complaints of noise. That's too bad. Irvine and the surrounding rich cities have tons of beautiful cars to be seen and shown off.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2014/12/15/a-northern-white-rhino-has-died-there-are-now-five-left-in-the-entire-world/Angalifu was 44 when he died of old age on Sunday at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, Calif. He was a northern white rhinoceros, a species on the brink of extinction. Following his death, there are just five northern white rhinos left worldwide, all in captivity.
"Angalifu's death is a tremendous loss to all of us, not only because he was well beloved here at the park but also because his death brings this wonderful species one step closer to extinction," safari park curator Randy Rieches told the AP in a statement.
The San Diego Zoo has one remaining northern white rhino, an elderly female named Nola. Despite the hopes of conservationists, Angalifu and Nola were unable to breed, the Los Angeles Times reported.
In addition to Nola, the world's only remaining northern white rhinos are:
- Sudan, a male living in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya. He's now the final remaining male of his species. - Najin and Fatu, two females living in the Kenya preserve with Sudan. - An elderly female at the Dvur Kralove Zoo in the Czech Republic. The zoo is responsible for the care of Sudan, Najin and Fatu, and sent them to Kenya as part of a last-ditch breeding program.
The species has likely already lost its last chance for natural reproduction. In October, a male called Suni -- the first of his kind ever born in captivity -- died of unknown causes in Kenya, where he was part of the breeding program with Sudan, Najin, and Fatu. At the time, the Dvur Kralove zoo called Suni "probably the last male capable of breeding."

The death of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old boy who was shot last month by a Cleveland police officer who authorities say mistook the child's air gun for a real firearm, has been ruled a homicide, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office said Friday.
The November 22 shooting outside a Cleveland recreation center is under investigation, and Tamir's family has filed a lawsuit against two officers and the city over his death.
The homicide finding indicates that Tamir was killed by the police officer, rather than dying accidentally or by natural causes or by suicide. Medical examiners' homicide findings make no comment on whether the killing constitutes a crime.
The cause of death was a "gunshot wound of the torso with injuries of major vessel, intestines and pelvis," according to paperwork provided by Christopher Harris in the medical examiner's communications office. http://www.cnn.com/2014/12/12/justice/cleveland-tamir-rice/index.htmlWonder what happens next...

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/12/11/370055472/dick-cheney-on-senate-torture-investigation-the-report-is-full-of-crap"The report is full of crap."
That's what former Vice President Dick Cheney told Fox News in an interview about a Senate investigation that found the Central Intelligence Agency used brutal techniques to interrogate terrorism suspects and then misled lawmakers, the White House and Congress about what they were doing.
Cheney was combative and unrepentant, saying both he and then-President George W. Bush knew full well the techniques being used on detainees. Bush, he said, was an "integral part of the program" and "had to approve it before we went through with it."
Fox's Bret Baier pressed Cheney with specific details about some of the horrible things some prisoners were subjected to, including rectal rehydration. Cheney said what the administration approved was not tantamount to torture, but he added:
—"I have no sympathy for them [the detainees]."
— "How nice do you want to be to the murderers of 3,000 Americans on 9/11?"
— "I'd do it again in a minute."
— The CIA did "a hell of a job and they deserve our gratitude."
— The end "absolutely" justified the means.
You should watch the accompanying video.

http://the-toast.net/2014/05/27/ayn-rands-harry-potter-sorcerers-stone/Hilarious “You’re a wizard, Harry,” Hagrid said. “And you’re coming to Hogwarts.”
“What’s Hogwarts?” Harry asked.
“It’s wizard school.”
“It’s not a public school, is it?”
“No, it’s privately run.”
“Good. Then I accept. Children are not the property of the state; everyone who wishes to do so has the right to offer educational goods or services at a fair market rate. Let us leave at once.”
***
“Malfoy bought the whole team brand-new Nimbus Cleansweeps!” Ron said, like a poor person. “That’s not fair!”
“Everything that is possible is fair,” Harry reminded him gently. “If he is able to purchase better equipment, that is his right as an individual. How is Draco’s superior purchasing ability qualitatively different from my superior Snitch-catching ability?”
“I guess it isn’t,” Ron said crossly.
Harry laughed, cool and remote, like if a mountain were to laugh. “Someday you’ll understand, Ron.”
***
Professor Snape stood at the front of the room, sort of Jewishly. “There will be no foolish wand-waving or silly incantations in this class. As such, I don’t expect many of you to appreciate the subtle science and exact art that is potion-making. However, for those select few who possess, the predisposition…I can teach you how to bewitch the mind and ensnare the senses. I can tell you how to bottle fame, brew glory, and even put a stopper in death.”
Harry’s hand shot up.
“What is it, Potter?” Snape asked, irritated.
“What’s the value of these potions on the open market?”
“What?”
“Why are you teaching children how to make these valuable products for ourselves at a schoolteacher’s salary instead of creating products to meet modern demand?”
“You impertinent boy–“
“Conversely, what’s to stop me from selling these potions myself after you teach us how to master them?”
“I–“
“This is really more of a question for the Economics of Potion-Making, I guess. What time are econ lessons here?”
“We have no economics lessons in this school, you ridiculous boy.”
Harry Potter stood up bravely. “We do now. Come with me if you want to learn about market forces!”
The students poured into the hallway after him. They had a leader at last.
***
Harry and Ron stood before the Mirror of Erised. “My God,” Ron said. “Harry, it’s your dead parents.”
Harry’s eyes flicked momentarily over to the mirror. “So it is. This information is neither useful nor productive. Let us leave at once, to assist Hagrid in his noble enterprise of raising as many dragon eggs as he sees fit, in spite of our country’s unjust dragon-trading restrictions.”
“But it’s your parents, Harry,” Ron said. Ron never really got it.
Harry sighed. “The fundamental standard for all relationships is the trader principle, Ron.”
“I don’t understand,” Ron said.
“Of course you don’t,” said Harry affectionately. “This principle holds that we should interact with people on the basis of the values we can trade with them – values of all sorts, including common interests in art, sports or music, similar philosophical outlooks, political beliefs, sense of life, and more. Dead people have no value according to the trader principle.”
“But they gave birth to y–“
“I made myself, Ron,” Harry said firmly.

“Give me your wand, boy,” Voldemort hissed.
“I cannot do that. This wand represents my wealth, which is itself a tangible result of my achievements. Wealth is the product of man’s capacity to think,” Harry said bravely.
Voldemort gasped.
“There is a level of cowardice lower than that of the conformist: the fashionable non-conformist.”
Voldemort began to melt. Harry lit a cigarette, because he was the master of fire.
“The smallest minority on earth is the individual. Those who deny individual rights cannot claim to be defenders of minorities. The minimum wage is a tax on the successful. The market will naturally dictate the minimum wage without the government stepping in to determine arbitrary limits.”
Voldemort howled.
“I’m going to sell copies of my wand at an enormous markup,” Harry said, “and you can buy one like everyone else.”
Voldemort had been defeated.
“He hated us for our freedom,” Ron said.
“No, Ron,” Harry said. “He hated us for our free markets.”
Hermione ached with desire for the both of them to master her, but nobody paid her any attention. They had empires to build.

Well, SOA is over.
What do you think of the ending?
Personally, I'm very satisfied with the way it ended. It's tragic and unfortunate, but I don't think there's any other way the story could have gone any other way and still made sense.
I'm a little surprised that Nero didn't react more dramatically to Jax telling him that he had killed Gemma. But on the other hand, he had already learned that Gemma killed Tara and was already distancing himself from her.
There's also some poeticness from Jax's "I got this" when he leaves the club for the last time, the same line that Opie said to Jax before his death.

I'm in the midst of booking a flight back to Ohio for either a funeral or a final visit with my uncle, depending on how the coming week or two goes.
It's easy for most of my extended family to go, since almost everyone lives in Ohio or Pennsylvania. But my parents, brother, and I are the only ones that live out in California, so we always have to travel back there for family events. Sucks because it costs just as much to fly 4 adults to Ohio as it does to Hawaii, and I'd much rather go to Hawaii.
