I see what you're getting at, regarding things such as creationism being forced within the school and such, but to say that religious bias should be completely eliminated seems both impossible and unfair. Bias exists within everyone, religious or not, it's simply another variable which can effect their votes.
For example, abortion. For sure there are religious people who support it and there are non-religious who are against it, but many are against it and for it respectively. All sorts of variables play a part in their stance, from religion, to upbringing, media, personal experiences, ect. It is near impossible to have a non-bias stance on the issue, especially considering that people see life in so many different ways; such as life from conception when a genetically different human has come into play, during a certain trimester when certain organs and functions have developed, or when the child is able to live independent from the mother. All of these variables will play a part in their vote, and to say one variable should be exempt is not very democratic in my personal opinion. Should we try to have a non-bias system, yes, but it simply is unfeasible with such a species as ours.

Those eyes are a constant reminder that this thing lives in unending pain.

That's true only up to a certain extent. While it might stop there for most people, it has the capacity to go beyond just that. An easy example would be to look at the couples who consider each other the best of friends.

I was speaking mainly in regards to the initial lust and the attraction that follows. The kind of love you're referring to is storge love, a type of love where passion is not a central theme to it. Still, love is mainly controlled by the release of chemicals imo.
