I never took American History X. The movie. You ever see it?
Fucking great. Edward Norton was awesome. I think it's on netflix, check it out. It's one of my favourite movies of all time.
Unless you're not being serious, in which case disregard.
Oh fuck I was just joking. Gonna just go watch it. lol

Or maybe people have a strong believe system within themselves? Ideals don't just change when a person tells you otherwise.
Like, you're never gonna change a Neo-Nazi's beliefs. i mean, i don't see any reason why you couldn't--have you ever seen american history x?... anyway it's not like we're dealing with neo-nazis anyway
we're dealing with pessimism--a very vague, malleable philosophy
if you were to tell me that every single person who has ever died is now in kitten heaven, where they can eat chocolate all day without getting sick or fat, then i might just cease to be a pessimist (if you provided me with proof)
silly example, but i'm just saying
I never took American History X. Sorry :/ Also, kitten heaven with tons of chocolate? Sold.

Sorry, just saying that it depends in how you see things. If you see things like that then there's little one can do to change that. I really don't see it that way. Well I mean, it's pretty obvious that our world is mostly pretty shitty. Not everyone lives in the first world, and even most who do, don't live lives that are all that great. Yeah, a lot of people claim to be happy and stuff but humans are hard-wired to never be 100% satisfied. It's called the hedonic treadmill, you may or may not be familiar with it.
So, it's not a "matter of perspective", as you seem to think. The evidence is there -- we live in a shitty world. Nay, reality.
Having a mindset of something else is your right as a human being, but it only says to me that you don't care about what's true. You care about what makes you feel good. Which is, again, your prerogative.
Well you are always cool when talking so... lol
Well, hopefully I don't change your mind because I agree with Verbatim on... mostly everything. I enjoy your company as well.
I like me and my little reality. :] Oh you didn't... believe me. But you're like okay.

If you see things like that then there's little one can do to change that. garbage
if you want someone to change their outlook on life, all you have to do is present evidence to the contrary
someone thinks the bad in the universe outweighs the good? well, present evidence to the contrary
if you can't do that, then chances are, you're wrong
Or maybe people have a strong believe system within themselves? Ideals don't just change when a person tells you otherwise. Like, you're never gonna change a Neo-Nazi's beliefs.

Only if you want it though. Wait, clarify. "Only if you want" what? What am I wanting?
But then again, you're actually being pretty nice so I'm just going to say that its cool.
Hahaha, thanks?

I didn't say it was irrational, just edgy. I see no difference. "Edgy" means that you're different for the sake of being different, which is irrational. Any pessimist is a pessimist because they believe that the bad outweighs the good. That's why they're a pessimist. Not because they "want to be different".
I think that being a realist is acknowledging both good and bad stuff. No extremes, just a balance. Well, I mean, there isn't a balance. The bad overwhelmingly outweighs the good.
Only if you want it though. But then again, you're actually being pretty nice so I'm just going to say that its cool.

Ah, Old Man Sandy!
How you doing?
I'm taking a week off. And doing fucking nothing. And I'm going to enjoy seven days of fucking nothing. Like sleeping. And eating not shit food. And an air conditioner.
I'm okay.
Take it easy, you deserve a breather.

I take the good with the bad always. I acknowledge the negatives though, only a fool wouldn't. and then you realize that there really is a deficit of "good" to take away from most things
maybe when you're older
Maybe when I starting cutting for marty.

I take the good with the bad always.
Which is absolutely your prerogative. I only disagree with your implication that pessimism is irrational, which it certainly isn't.

pessimism is the only rational perspective
7317
« on: July 25, 2015, 12:44:07 AM »
That's not being rational, that's just being edgy for the sake of being edgy. It is absolutely rational to focus on the negatives over the positives. We evolved to feel more intensely about negatives than positives.
Whether you feel yourself to be an optimist or not, there's no denying that negative emotions are stronger than positive ones.
You could make the argument that being pessimistic (Ex. focusing on the negatives) is as rational as being optimistic.
No disrespect.
None taken. I'm not the kind of person to feel offended once challenged.
I take the good with the bad always. I acknowledge the negatives though, only a fool wouldn't.

A religion-bashing book?
That's a crude way of putting it. But I haven't read it.
But that's clearly what it is. The damn cover says "how religion poisons everything." "A religion-bashing book" is probably the most clear and concise manner in which to summarize the book.
Not necessarily. "Bashing" has connotations of incoherence and irrationality, which I'm sure is absent from Hitchen's book.
"religion poisons everything."
That's a pretty irrational and unfounded statement to me,
The entire point of the book is justifying that, so I'm not sure how it could be interpreted as "unfounded". You could make the argument that it is irrational to say, because of all the "good things" religious people do.
which thus leads me to believe the book is going to ignore any and all good religion serves,
I doubt it, but like any logical person, it's going to focus on the negatives rather than the positives. Especially since the former outweighs the latter.
That's not being rational, that's just being edgy for the sake of being edgy. No disrespect.

Pretending that I didn't link it when you know I did
