Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens has a multicultural cast of characters, a fact that has set off a firestorm on social media. #BoycottStarWarsVII became a trending Twitter topic on Monday, with some people calling for the boycott of a movie they claim is “anti-white.” That, however has incited even more people to slam the proposed boycotters, resulting in an online racial debate about the sci-fi blockbuster.

One of the first tweets using the hashtag came from a user named @genophilia, who wrote, “#BoycottStarWarsVII because it is anti-white propaganda promoting #whitegenocide.” The person added, “White children deserve wholesome movies, not more PC anti-white diversity crap.” A person with the handle @officialCritDis agreed, tweeting, “It’s nothing more than a social justice propaganda piece that alienates it’s core audience of young white males.” And there are some additional tweets in support of the boycott that are too racist and offensive for Gossip Cop to print.

However, tons of Twitter users have called out the protestors, with @DrMarkBurnley writing, “If #BoycottStarWarsVII results in cinemas being free of racists, all the better.” @GeonnCannon shared a similar sentiment, expressing, “I support #BoycottStarWarsVII. If you want to stay home because the leads are black and female, I want you to stay home, too.” A Twitter user named @Tor_H asserted, “Let’s be clear: The backlash against #BoycottStarWarsVII is what is causing it to trend.” These tweets and others that similarly condemn the boycott have been retweeted and favorited hundreds of times.
