Gaming / Armies of Azeroth gameplay (SC2 mod)
« on: January 22, 2016, 08:25:34 PM »
If anyone read my Starcraft 2 review, I posted a video showing this mod. Armies of Azeroth is an HD remake of Warcraft 3 made by an independent group of people.

The alpha for this mod is almost ready I think and will be available to play through the Starcraft 2 Arcade. This looks so cool and I'm excited to play it... even though I will probably get rekt

Not only have they put a man on the Sun, cure ebola/AIDS/SARS, but now they have made hangover-free alcohol.

Scientists in North Korea have invented a "suave" liquor that doesn't produce hangovers, state media reports.

Koryo Liquor, which was unveiled earlier this week in the English-language Pyongyang Times, contains up to 40% alcohol and is derived from ginseng (also known as insam) and glutinous rice.

Ginseng is notoriously bitter, and food products that include the root often contain added sugar to mitigate its harsh flavor.

After years of research, scientists from the Taedonggang Foodstuff Factory replaced the miracle liquor's added sugar with scorched boiled rice, a move that they say also prevents hangovers after overindulgence.
"In the process of boiling, the nutritive substances of the rice settle down to the bottom and the starch breaks up to become glucose at a high temperature," the Times' Jong Hwa Sun explains.

Taedonggang Foodstuff Factory also touts the beverage's medicinal qualities, which are explained in nebulous detail.

"The scorched glutinous rice contains essential amino acids, inorganic substances and vitamins and helps quicken lipolysis," Sun adds.

The Flood / Siberian woman airlifted to hospital
« on: January 17, 2016, 07:25:23 PM »
But this isn't your average hospital visit. She's lived in the Siberian wilderness her entire life, away from civilization. That is insane. I can't imagine anyone living out in the middle of Siberia without any sort of modern technology to help them.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jan/15/siberian-hermit-agafia-lykova-russia-airlifted-to-hospital-over-leg-pain

Quote
A 70-year-old hermit who has spent her entire life in the Siberian wilderness has been airlifted to a hospital to treat a pain in her legs.

Agafia Lykova is the last remaining member of a deeply religious family that fled civilisation in 1936 and did not know about the second world war until geologists stumbled upon them in 1978. After she contacted the “mainland” with an emergency satellite telephone to ask for medical help, the governor, Aman Tuleyev, ordered her evacuation from her homestead near the Abakan river to a hospital in Tashtagol, according to the Kemerovo region website.

Doctors have “removed the acute pain” in her legs and plan to keep her in hospital over the next week, it said. Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper reported that the pain was related to cartilage deterioration.

A member of the Old Believer sect that split off from the Russian Orthodox church 350 years ago, Lykova’s father, Karp, took his wife and two children into the taiga after a Soviet patrol shot his brother, eventually settling more than 150 miles (240km) from the nearest village. The family survived for decades on their remote homestead, where winter temperatures reach -40C, without guns, salt or metal implements.

The youngest of four children, Agafia had not encountered any human beings outside her family, had read only the Bible and prayer books, and had never tasted bread or milk before she was 35. Outdated words and religious terms pepper her speech. She has lived alone since her father died in 1988, although bears and foxes sometimes disturb her looking for food.

Last year, the British director Rebecca Marshall began work on a documentary about Lykova, called The Forest in Me.

“When I finally met Agafia, what surprised me was that rather than feeling like a primitive situation, it felt like arriving in the future – to a world with no technology, the vast forest littered with discarded space junk,” Marshall told Russia Beyond the Headlines, referring to the fact that Lykova’s home is under the flight path of rockets from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. “It is an incredible and beautiful place.”

Gaming / Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 review
« on: January 08, 2016, 04:25:00 PM »

The game: Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is the 6th Call of Duty title made by Treyarch and was recently released a couple months ago back in November. The game was released for all major platforms, PC, and even last-gen. Why on last-gen? Because more money, that’s why.

The campaign:

The story takes place 40-50 years after the events of Black Ops 2 somewhere in the 2060s-2070s in a future full of advanced military and civilian technology such as cybernetics, which is the game’s primary focus. There’s this thing called Direct Neural Interface or DNI for short and it allows people to take complete control over their physiology and allow them to interact with computer systems. The DNI allows soldiers to have something called Tactical Mode which points out enemies, dangers, as well as other hazards to the user and you get to use this throughout the entire campaign. It comes in handy in a lot of situations but it does make the game feel a little too easy sometimes, as it tells you where grenades/explosives are going to land and points out enemies, even enemies behind walls at great distances. One useful thing about this Tactical Mode is that it shows your health and how much hits you can take before dying and that was something I liked about it.

The playable character in this campaign is literally named “The Player” and I’m not kidding, that’s actually his/her name. Player has no background story for you to care about him/her, no personality, and an awful voice actor. Oh, and by the way you can change the look of Player in the most disappointing character customization mode ever. All you do is pick the gender you want and pick the face you want, which all look the same by the way. The dude looks the same and the girl looks the same regardless of which face you pick. I hated the way Treyarch went with this approach, using a nobody whose name is literally Player instead of creating someone with backstory and interesting characters like Alex Mason, Viktor Reznov, and even David Mason from previous games. Another thing, ALL major previous Black Ops characters are never referenced or talked about in this game. Raul Menendez is talked about, but very briefly and it wasn’t even an accurate description about who he was.

Jacob Hendriks, who is Player’s best friend in the Black Ops organization, is with you the whole time and this guy has a serious anger issue as he’s always cussing and literally hates everything and everyone, even your allies. Rachel Kane who is a more light-hearted character aids you and Hendriks on your mission via communications and sometimes on the ground to stop John Taylor, a Black Ops member whose DNI became corrupted and spread the virus to his squad’s DNI. The virus, which name is Corvus and is one of the antagonists, has corrupted Taylor’s mind and made its way into Player’s and Hendrik’s mind as well, causing everyone to act different and much more aggressive than normal. Corvus is using Taylor and everyone it has infected and keeps telling you about this “Frozen Forest” that literally everyone knows about except you, the player. You don’t see this Frozen Forest until the end of the game in the weirdest, strangest, confusing, and most what-the-fuck type of level in Call of Duty campaign history. It felt like I wasn’t even playing a Call of Duty game anymore at this point because of everything that was going on in this level. I mean, I give them credit for designing a different type of level but what the hell man.You gotta see it to believe it.

John Taylor, the corrupt Black Ops soldier you must stop because Corvus is taking over his body via his DNI. When you first meet him, he seems like a cool guy and a character that I liked compared to Hendriks. Turns out he's one of the antagonists of this game.
Spoiler

Rachel Kane, who mainly helps you via communications. Hendriks throughout the whole story thinks she is a double agent and secretly works for Taylor when in reality she isn't. Compared to Hendriks and Player, she is actually one of the few interesting characters in this campaign.
Spoiler

The campaign at first seemed just like another run and gun campaign mode with no unique and different elements like in previous games. I was a little disappointed with the way this game starts out but it did get a little better towards the middle and towards the end. There were even mini-boss fights that weren’t quick-time events for once and surprisingly, all of these fights were different which was something that caught me by surprise. Treyarch made a multiplayer-like progression system for the campaign that allows you to unlock different weapons, cybercore abilities like hacking robots to make them explode, and different outfits for Player to wear. You can use the same loadout throughout the whole game if you want to and that was something I was glad they added. Although, I think its retarded how you need to equip a perk in order to pick up weapons off the ground.

Mechs and robots are enemies you will be constantly fighting. I'm disappointed that some of these mechs you encounter in the campaign aren't in multiplayer. It would have been fun earning them as Scorestreaks.
Spoiler

But one thing I absolutely HATED was the lack of story-driven decisions like what Black Ops 2 had. In that game, I actually cared about everything that was going on in that game because the outcome would be different depending on my choices. Black Ops 3’s campaign is as linear as any Call of Duty before it. Black Ops 2 had different story-driven decisions that changed the way the story progressed and even had multiple endings that were based on what the player chose to do throughout the campaign. Black Ops 3 has one ending and it has to be, if not, the absolute worst and unexpected ending I have ever witnessed in my life. If you thought Mass Effect 3 had a terrible ending or even Destiny, just lookup this ending and you’ll be amazed at how bad it is.

The multiplayer:
Since I got the campaign out of the way, the multiplayer is where most people come to play in Call of Duty. How does it compare to previous titles and what does it add? I will let you know below.

- A Specialist must be chosen alongside a custom loadout before a match. There are 9 total Specialists and all have their own unique signature weapon and signature ability to cast in-game. These weapons/abilities are gained by earning points by getting kills, capping objectives, etc. similar to that of Scorestreaks. All the Specialists have their own callsign they go by too. For example, Battery has a War Machine grenade launcher that can be used and her other ability is Kinetic Armor which can deflect bullets away from the player’s body for a short time. Another Specialist, Outrider,  has a compound bow that shoots explosive-tip arrows and her other ability is Vision Pulse which marks nearby enemies and lets her see through walls, kind of like Promethean Vision from Halo 4. All Specialists are customizable from acquiring new masks/helmets, body armor, and end game gesture which I’ll explain more later. Some of these Specialists’s weapons feel really overpowered, especially Reaper, whose arm turns into a minigun and can mow down anything in its path with just 2-3 bullets. These Specialists provide players to pick which fits their playstyle more and they did a good job doing this but some obvious nerfs are most definitely needed for some of the Specialist weapons.

All the Specialists and their callsigns:

- The weapons in this game are all fairly balanced. There isn’t that one gun like the MP40 from World at War or the Famas from Black Ops 1 that dominates and makes other guns obsolete and that’s a great thing to hear. However, the weapon variety is lacking this time around, especially when it comes to secondaries. There’s only 5 secondary weapons that you can choose from. There are only 3 pistols and only 2 launchers which is pathetic. Notable favorites of mine are the Man-O-War, M8A7, Razorback, Drakon, XR-2, ICR-1, and Kuda.

Some pics of the weapons:

M8A7, like its predecessor the M8A1, this is a 4-round burst weapon with low recoil and excellent rate of fire.
Spoiler

Man-O-War, a slow-firing automatic weapon with high damage and good range.
Spoiler

Razorback, sub machine gun with a medium rate of fire, respectable damage, and lowest recoil in its class
Spoiler

- I didn’t play Advanced Warfare so I didn’t know if they had the jump-pack in that game but it is in Black Ops 3. This allows players to gain extra height by jumping a second time and traverse over hard to reach obstacles. The jump-pack has a cooldown so you can only use it for a short time before it runs out. This cooldown also affects the “baseball slide” you can do when you hold the crouch button when sprinting. The Dolphin Dive is gone and this slide that I call a baseball slide cause thats what it looks like replaces the Dolphin Dive. Not gonna lie, I actually miss the dolphin dive a lot. The slide is cool but it just doesn’t have that same feeling I got when I evaded danger like the dive did.

- Running along walls is something you can do in this game to gain new heights or flank the enemy. There are sections on a lot of the maps that have walls just for wall running. You can still use your weapons while running alongside a wall which can make for some awesome looking kills or embarrassing deaths if killed by someone doing this. I’m not entirely sure how I really feel about the wall running. I mean its different and I want Call of Duty to have different things to change up the gameplay, but is wall running really necessary to change that? I don’t know. I’m curious to see others reading this and what they have to say about the wall running.

- The game currently has 13 multiplayer maps including Nuketown which they keep bringing back for some reason. I’ve never liked that map because its name is misleading(The map is 2 houses and not even the entire town) and the spawns are god-awful. All of the maps in Black Ops 3 so far are small-medium sized with only about 2 maps feeling larger than the rest, and the largest map is only playable in big team modes. Some of these maps are fine, I don’t particularly dislike any of them other than Nuketown which I’ve stated already. I’ll probably end up getting some of the DLC packs later on since they’ve already teased some Black Ops 2 map remakes like Hijacked, a map I enjoyed playing on from the previous title.

- The spawning system in this game isn’t the best and its really awful, at least in my experience. They’re completely random and you will spawn in random places across the map whether you’re near your team or the enemy. I have to constantly watch my back because I never know when someone is going to spawn somewhere behind me and kill me and getting killed from behind happens a lot in this game. I’m convinced at this point that the map developers put a poster of the map on a wall and throw darts at it and wherever the darts land is where a spawn point is placed in the game.

- Supply Drops are in this game and they add unlockables to your inventory such as rare weapon camouflages, unique reflex sights, and unique Specialist customization options. There are 2 Supply Drop crates, Common and Rare. In order to purchase Supply Drops, you need to trade in Cryptokeys which you earn by completing matches or by buying COD Points via microtransaction. You can avoid buying COD Points altogether and just earn Cryptokeys and use those. Its up to you.

Example of what you can get in Supply Drops:

- The lag in this game can be unbearable at times. This is 2016 and why they’re still depending on the severely outdated p2p system is beyond me. There is literally NO excuse to not have dedicated servers at this point for this franchise. It’s absolutely embarrassing.

- Another thing that is added is the end-game screen where the top 3 players of the winning team are shown off. The Specialist you played as will do a taunt and say something stupid. Why they added this I don't know why. The most stupid line I've heard from one of these was "I am become death, destroyer of scrubs." Are you kidding me? What 10 year old wrote that line?

Graphics:
Since Modern Warfare 2 which was released in 2009 (that game still looks pretty good), every Call of Duty since then has been running on that game’s engine and you can tell big time in Black Ops 3. Textures will sometimes look a little blurry and need a few seconds to render and look like they’re supposed to and even some map props are recycled from previous Call of Duty titles. This game engine has had its run and now it needs to be thrown out and left behind. These games make millions and millions every year and its time to put all that money into a new engine already. There are times when the game can look good, but it could be so much better on a modern engine.

And Jesus Christ… this game on Xbox 360 and PS3 looks soooo horrible! It makes me wonder why they even bothered with last-gen, oh wait that’s right how could I forget, more money. Some games like Halo 2 still look better than Black Ops 3 on Xbox 360/Playstation 3.

Graphics comparisons between the Xbox 360 and Xbox One
Spoiler

Zombies:

Zombies has been a phenomenon in Call of Duty since World at War and is generally one of the selling points for these games other than the multiplayer. The zombies map that comes with the game is rather large and has a lot of interesting features in it, like the Gobblegum which gives you a temporary perk to use. I haven’t really played the zombies mode in this game all that much, but its just so weird seeing this mode so different compared to how simple the concept was back in World at War. Zombies has really come a long way since their first introduction.

And you know what’s bullshit? They brought back the best zombies map Der Riese from World at War and the only way to play it is to buy the $50 season pass. They must be out of their mind.

Final Verdict:

Black Ops 3 is a really fun game at times but sometimes I dislike it and wish it were more like Black Ops 2. To me, it really did feel like Treyarch went all out with Black Ops 2 in everything it had to offer and that’s why Black Ops 2 is one of, if not, my favorite Call of Duty game. With Black Ops 3, it just didn’t feel like Treyarch did their best this time around. This game is still easy to get into like any other Call of Duty and if you want a fun and fast-paced FPS multiplayer game, then you should give this one a shot and see if you like the additions they made.

This isn’t the best Call of Duty game and it most certainly isn’t the worst Call of Duty game either. It falls somewhere in between in my opinion. That is why I’m giving Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 a rating of 6.5/10. I do enjoy this game sometimes but I wouldn't put it on my top 3 list for favorite Call of Duty games. The top 3 still belong to Call of Duty 4, Modern Warfare 2, and Black Ops 2 for me.

This game does have its moments but the mediocre and confusing campaign and some multiplayer elements really do hold this game back. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m burnt out by all these future-styled FPS games already. Its time to take Call of Duty back to the roots, back to the basics, and back to what the term “Call of Duty" actually meant, and that is World War 2. Here’s hoping Treyarch will make another WWII Call of Duty as their next game.

Gaming / Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando review
« on: December 19, 2015, 05:10:29 PM »
With the remake of the first game on the way, I figured I would review this R&C game because I consider it to be the best in the series. Out of the PS2 games, this one definitely sticks out the most.

The game: Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando or Ratchet and Clank 2: Locked and Loaded if you live in Europe or Australia, is the second installment of this franchise. The game was made by Insomniac Games. This game introduced many new features that has been with the series ever since and many, including myself, consider this to be the best Ratchet and Clank game.

The story: Ratchet and Clank defeated Chairman Drek and are now considered heroes around the Solana Galaxy. They are being interviewed about their adventure when they are suddenly teleported to an unknown location somewhere by Abercrombie Fizwidget, boss of the Megacorp Corporation in the Bogon Galaxy. Megacorp is the big corporation kinda like Gadgetron from the first game that creates literally everything from household appliances to super insane weapons like the Zodiac. Mr Fizwidget explains to Ratchet and Clank that a top-secret experiment was stolen from Megacorp by The Masked Thief and he wants our heroes to get it back for him.

Mr. Fizwidget before he lost the experiment
Spoiler

Spoiler

But what does the experiment do? Well, we don’t know what it is other than its a small, furry animal that Mr. Fizwidget wants back super bad. I like how they decided to keep its purpose a secret until about halfway through the game when you meet up with Angela Cross, who ends up being the Masked Thief, and she’s a Lombax like Ratchet. This is the first time in the whole series that we see another Lombax up until the PS3 Ratchet and Clank games I believe where they go into the Lombax backstories some more. Angela is a really cool character and fits in with the whole situation as she’s working behind-the-scenes, giving Ratchet and Clank any information she can about the experiment. She also reveals that she used to work for Megacorp and knows what the experiment’s purpose is. Angela tells you that Megacorp is cloning the experiment, calling it “The Protopet” and selling the clones to the public as pets and the Protopets are extremely aggressive and attack their owners. This means that R&C must shut down Megacorp's mass production of the Protopet at all costs before planets get overrun by them. I remember a Jimmy Neutron special called “Attack of the Twonkies” and that special episode immediately reminded me of the Protopet from this game. I wonder if this game inspired the idea behind that episode but who knows.

Planet Damosel is one of the planets that is being overrun by the Protopets.
Spoiler

This is Angela, the first time we see another Lombax in the series. She's much taller than Ratchet and doesn't have a tail. Ratchet shows feelings for her and is surprised that she's able to hold her own. Unfortunately, this is the only game that has Angela in it. She does make an extremely small cameo in Up Your Arsenal but not until the ending.
Spoiler

One thing that caught me as a surprise as a kid was when in this game, you defeat a boss that feels like a final boss because it takes forever to kill him. When you beat him, it feels like the game is over but nope, you get to go to a few more levels and get to blow more stuff up and explore. The way they did this was pretty neat and makes the game even longer.

The new characters that Ratchet and Clank encounter on their journey are all awesome and I’ve already talked about how Angela is a great character. My favorites have to be The Mathematician who talks in sentences using Math puns with words like reduce, divide, and subtract to describe how Ratchet will lose in a battle. Another is the Mystic who is a peculiar character that believes “Forces” are in all things. And last but not least, Slim Cognito is one of the coolest characters, mainly because he sells you weapon mods. Some characters from the first game like the RYNO guy and Plumber make an appearance that will sell you some important items. Meeting characters like these make me appreciate the development behind them. Insomniac has a great way to make characters that make short cameos last forever in your memory.

Skip to 5:15 to see the cutscene with the Plumber. He breaks the fourth wall by saying "See ya in another year or so!" and what do you know, Up Your Arsenal came out a year later and the Plumber is in that game too.
Spoiler
YouTube

As for the humor in Going Commando, they made this game really funny. There's a scene where Angela says "Alright just what the fuck is going on? You can clearly tell she said "Fuck" but they censor it by putting a black bar over her mouth and bleep it out. That part makes me laugh every time and totally catches you by surprise the first time. Where as the first game had humor, it was also kind of a bit serious in my opinion but I guess it made sense because of the plot and character development. It was still great but I wish it was funnier. Going Commando has much more adult humor in it, there are a couple of fourth-wall breaks that always makes me laugh, and the various parodies of real-life companies and people is done so well. The commercials for the Arena Battles are probably some of the best cinematics that Insomniac has created. They’re over-the-top and ridiculous and I love them.

The Arena battle cutscene is at 5:30. Watch it, you won't regret it.
Spoiler
YouTube

Gameplay:
For the second installment of the series, Insomniac really went all out with this game by adding a TON of new gameplay features that weren’t present in the first game. Some of it was done really well like the Arena Battles and Hoverbike races. Others, like the space battle missions, weren’t done that great and could have been improved on. Some of these gameplay features are why Going Commando is my favorite because there’s just so much stuff to do in this game.

The HUD is more easily recognizable and looks overall better in this game than the first. The top left is your weapon and ammo, the top-middle is your Nanotech, and the top right is the amount of bolts you have. The Quick-Select menu is back and now the game pauses whenever you bring up the menu to select your weapon or gadget.

- Ratchet plays very similar to how he did in the first game but the controls and the way he moves is vastly improved in this game so much. Ratchet runs faster, reacts faster, his double jump is much higher, and swings his wrench faster and harder too. Also we can strafe as Ratchet now which makes the gun play so much better.

- The weapons in Going Commando are my favorite from the whole series by far. All of them feel super powerful and deadly every time you pull the trigger. Where the first game focused more on the gadgets, this one definitely focused more on the weapons and they did an amazing job at designing them. Some notable favorites of mine were the Mini-Nuke, Plasma Coil, Lava Gun, Bouncer, and of course the RYNO II. This game is very generous when it comes to finding ammo too as the game will always replenish ammo for the weapons that need it most. The wrench gets some love too as Ratchet will find more powerful wrenches as the game goes on.

The Plasma Coil/Plasma Storm is one of the best weapons to be introduced to the series.

- Every weapon you get gains experience for every enemy you destroy. If you fill the experience bar for a weapon, it upgrades and becomes even more powerful than before. Also, you can visit Slim Cognito’s vendor to buy specific weapon modifications like a Shock Mod, Acid Mod, or Lock-On mod to make your weapons even better. This is a feature that was first introduced in this game and has remained in all future titles of the series.

For example, this is the Lancer. You start the game off with this gun.
Spoiler

When you upgrade it, it becomes the Heavy Lancer. It has a faster rate of fire and holds more ammo.
Spoiler

- The game has upgradable health too. Not only does your weapon gain experience but your Nanotech does too. If you fill the Nanotech experience bar, you gain 1 extra bar of health and everything explodes around you when that happens. There are Nanotech Boosts hidden around certain levels and when you find these, your Nanotech instantly gets 1 bar. This is also another feature that was introduced in this game and also remained in all future titles.

Nanotech Boosts will automatically increase your nanotech by 1 health bar.

- For the first time in the series, you can buy armor for Ratchet. Although not available until about half-way through the game, buying armor in this game is definitely a must as enemies will continue to get more powerful. The way of acquiring armor in Ratchet and Clank games has evolved over the years from simply buying it to searching for it on random planets. The best armor in the game, the Carbonox Armor, will resist 90% of incoming damage to Ratchet and that is insane.

The badass-looking Carbonox Armor and its yours for just the low price of 1,000,000 bolts.

- Ratchet’s ship is playable and upgradable too. Every once in a while, you’ll be thrown into a space battle mission, and some of them are okay I guess, they’re not the best. Some of these are mandatory and you must complete them in order to progress. Don’t expect Ace Combat level of controls here as it may take a few times to get used to them. The enemy ships are always on your ass its annoying. I hated these at first but once you upgrade the ship, you become unstoppable. The ship has missiles, torpedoes, mines, and a nuke device for the weapons. You can also upgrade the shields, engines, and add custom paintjobs to it. You can even change the design of the nose and wings too. You upgrade the ship with Raritanium you collect by blowing up asteroids and enemy ships.

Space Battles look something like this. Your ammo is in the top left of the screen. The ship's health is in the top-middle. The boost is in the top right and the bars under the ammo and boost are your shields.

- One of the most important features of this game is the Arena Battles. You pick the challenge you want to do and if you complete it, you’ll win the award of bolts or other equipment. Some Arena battles are story-driven so you have to do them. Once you finish, you can keep doing more battles or leave, its up to you to decide. You can always come back and do these later to get extra bolts. The arena battles consist of horde-mode style combat with waves of enemies and sometimes they’ll change it up like destroy 90 enemies in 90 seconds or beat a boss without taking a hit. Some of these are really fun and getting extra bolts is always nice. The Arena Battles was an excellent addition to this series and I’m glad they added these because it gives the player more stuff to do. The game Ratchet: Deadlocked was designed solely around Arena-Battle gameplay and objectives, that’s how much its had an impact on this series when it had a whole game made for it.

A picture of Ratchet fighting the B2 Brawler, a boss in one of the Arenas. Fighting the B2 Brawler and other Arena bosses are all optional and you can come back to do them whenever you like.

- This game has two-sandbox type levels where you explore and find crystals. I loved that they did this as you explore the level to find these crystals in a limited open world level, something that has probably never been done before in a game like this and the sense of scale really kicks in when you’re traversing these open maps. You collect these crystals and bring them back to the Mystic to earn bolts. There are 100 for each level and trust me, gathering all of them is totally worth it.

Finding crystals in the Tabora desert and finding moonstones in the frozen wastes on Grelbin is totally worth it. Just watch out for the monsters and other creatures that guard them.

- They brought back the hacking puzzles from the first game but made them so much more better. The Trespasser puzzle from the first game was monotonous and tedious. It took FOREVER to do those puzzles. Luckily in this game, the puzzles are much more quicker and won’t leave you vulnerable to enemy fire like the Trespasser did.

- And the last new thing they added is the Hoverbike races. Like with the space battles, these take a couple tries to get used to. These can be fun to do when you master the controls and you get extra bolts by doing it too. There’s a bunch of different challenges for the Hoverbike races like the Arena battles. With these races and how they are, it kinda feels like Mario Kart sometimes because you can pick up turbos and weapon powerups to gain an edge over your opponents.

Graphics:
The graphics for this game are surprisingly pretty damn good in my opinion. Ratchet is more fleshed out so is Clank. Levels and environments are much more beautiful and the artists did an excellent job at creating all kinds of places for you to explore and blow up. One thing I love that they did was that every time you arrive at a planet, you get a really big wideshot view of the level. It just makes the game much more atmospheric like that and its something I wish more games had.

These are the types of shots I'm talking about:

Also the level designers really made it seem like you really were in a different galaxy. I don’t know how to explain it but you definitely get a different feel with the Bogon Galaxy than you do with the Solana Galaxy. The planets in the Bogon Galaxy were darker and not as bright as the ones from the Solana Galaxy. Planets like Snivelak and Notak in this game especially are dark and gritty.

Soundtrack:
This game has one of my favorite OSTs of all time. Every song is beautiful and fits every level perfectly, especially the Arena Boss music. Oh my god that tune man, there is literally no other song that fits a situation more perfectly than that piece. David Bergeaud is such an underrated composer. It’s a shame that he doesn’t do the music for these games anymore. I'll link the songs that stand out the most below.

This track is one of my favorites to listen to. Listening to this with headphones is truly an experience.

Extra Content:
Insomniac brought a ton of new gameplay features that were welcomed and to top that, they introduced even more bonus content than before.

- Challenge Mode is back and better than before. In Challenge Mode, you get a Bolt Multiplier in the top right of your screen. To increase the multiplier, you must destroy tons of enemies. The higher this multiplier is, the more bolts enemies drop. The max is x20 so you can become filthy rich very quick with this multiplier. Just make sure you don’t get hit because if you do, it gets reset back to x1. Also in Challenge Mode, you can re-buy your upgraded weapons and upgrade them again so they can become even more ridiculously powerful.

- Skill Points return and there’s more to get this time. Skill Points are used to a unlock cheats like all characters having big heads, Ratchet in a tuxedo, and playing as a Snowman. Skill Points also unlock different paintjobs to buy for Ratchet’s ship.

- One of my favorites is the Monsterpedia. When you kill an enemy, it is documented in the Monsterpedia and you can go to it any time and see the enemy’s stats and read their lore which will sometimes have some Insomniac humor in it. It also keeps track of how many of them you killed and trust me, the most you’re gonna kill are the Protopets and Y.E.T.I.s because they’re numbers are endless. This is the only Ratchet and Clank game that has this feature.

Some of the different types of enemies you encounter thanks to the Monsterpedia's information:

- There’s also other sections like the Monsterpedia that gives you information about your weapons, gadgets, and ship upgrades in almost the same way the Monsterpedia gives you information about enemies.

- There are posters of Jak and Daxter on Planet Damosel around the city and in Ratchet’s apartment on his TV there’s another picture of Jak and Daxter. I always thought that this was cool and showed how both Insomniac and Naughty Dog reference each other. Clank even does Daxter’s dance whenever you find this certain gadget in the game. It’s great.

- The Insomniac Museum makes its debut in Going Commando and this has to be one of the coolest easter eggs in any game ever. You can only gain access to the Museum by finding a hidden teleporter at 3am on the PS2 clock on a certain date I think. You go through the actual offices of Insomniac and see all the content that was originally going to be in the game. You get to mess around with certain features like altering an explosion’s color and radius, drive around in vehicles that were cut, see enemies and environments that were gonna be in the game, and the developers even leave behind speech bubbles that tell you information about certain things in the game and tell you why they had to cut them. The only similar easter egg that I can think of that is like this is the Tribute Room from Reach. I wish more games had their own Insomniac Museum so you can see what the developers left behind for you to explore.

Final Verdict:

Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando is easily one of my favorite games of all time. Everything about this game just feels right and has so much stuff to do in it its insane… and this is just the second game! A lot of people say out of all the PS2 Ratchet and Clank games, Up Your Arsenal is the best but no, Going Commando is superior to Up Your Arsenal in almost every single way. Up Your Arsenal has the better story and better villain (Dr. Nefarious) but Going Commando has the better weapons, better combat, much more side-missions to do, and of course has the better RYNO. Don’t get me wrong I still love Up Your Arsenal as its my second favorite, but Going Commando is the one I’m always coming back to. Like I said at the beginning, this is the most important game of the entire series and wouldn’t mind seeing a remaster. If they’re remastering/remaking the first game, why not remake this one too?

Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando, for me, is a 9.5/10. I just love this game so much man and have replayed through it about 12 times. There’s a certain feeling that this R&C game has that the others seem to lack.

It definitely seems like they're taking a different approach to Godzilla this time, almost looks like a found-footage type of film. I really hope its not like that but I'm still optimistic. I also hope this gets released here in the states and not just exclusively to Japan.

I remember playing the first Command and Conquer back in the day and that game was awesome. Command and Conquer and Starcraft had such an impact on my early childhood and helped me learn how to use a computer basically. I didn't watch the awards show but I found this video and I appreciate them giving the award to Westwood. I also hope that because of this, the RTS genre will be somehow revived and we'll get a new generation of those types of games.

I wish that Westwood was never bought by EA. EA ruined C&C and killed the franchise when they released that abomination known as C&C 4.
