I think the underpinning sentiments we share here is the cultism/religiosity aspects of S1 that had a lot of us so captivated.
I've said it before, but I'll say it again. S2 is good as a standalone detective drama with political conspiracy elements, but it's by far a good True Detective season. If Pizza decides to go back to occultism, then I'm not bothered what theme/director etc he rolls with.
yeah i'm in absolute agreement that cultism made season 1 what it is. I would like it to happen again just in such a way that its still different. Another problem with season 2 is the lack of contrasting characters. Besides the facts that 4 POVs was a terrible mistake lets just say hypothetically it was just Velcoro and Simion. They're not that much different whereas Rust and Marty were polar opposites. Rust being the weird ass antinatalist, cynical of existence and Marty being the meat and potatoes average american was just too good of a character pairing. There needs to be something like that again in season 3

alright thinking about it i agree with your choice of Fassbender Jeff Bridges small town middle of nowhere Nevada or Utah. Don't wanna sound like I'm now regurgitating season 1 content but some kind of trouble with the Mormon church in Utah similar to the trouble with the religious figures in season 1 could work again without seeming like regurgitation. Political conspiracy, as you mentioned, like in season 2 is way too overdone. Whereas religious conspiracy is still relatively new territory and by far much more interesting. Also some conspiracy regarding the Native American reservations out there in the desert could really be interesting. Arizona could be great but Phoenix is too much like LA and too cliche IMO. Small town Arizona could be good but idk. Border/cartel conspiracy could be interesting. Director - honestly just bring back Cary Fukunga. The guy showed that he had talent. My second choice would be the Cohen Brothers song - fucking christ they could not possibly do worse than season two's song my picks also I think this season should and will be the last season

As cheesy as it is MW2 really did have an entertaining campaign. It's honestly better than anything Tom Clancy ever wrote or had adapted to film. Not that Tom Clancy's work is good.
