I just wanted to run this little survey because I feel like the biggest downfall in the battle of this malicious practice done by corporations like Microsoft and Google is that people are totally okay with them doing it. Also for discussion value just general thoughts on data mining and privacy invasion practices done by software corporations.

Hey Slash. We are all already fucked. There is a file with your name on it at the NSA

Better start faking your own death and discontinue your internet access entirely and live in the woods for the rest of your life if you don't want to be apart of it.

Everyone's privacy is already fucked.
yeah obviously but i don't want to further their goals by just giving away my personal info and browsing data

Then close all your accounts and stop using their products and services. Switch to Linux and use Firefox.
I do. I literally said that like twice in this thread.

Then what the fuck are you complaining about? If people don't want to do what you're doing when it comes to this shit, that's their choices, and for the record, Sep7 even has invisible tracking.
its called spreading awareness and having a discussion

3668
I don't really care.

Apathy is a horrible trait.

The delusion that there is any sort of "right to privacy" is as well.

Oh, so because you don't believe in it means it should be irrelevant for blah blah blah

You demand interconnected services, fast and catered shopping and search results, and a highly personalized and dynamic experience, while expecting to retain control over that information. It's a fantasy. In order to provide these services, companies need databases, and those databases are populated with basic identity information and tons of metadata about users.
I don't need any of those things which is why I don't use any of those things.
You don't use free gmail, social media, forums, YouTube, shopping services, or search engines? Then what's all the bitching about?
That other people give into it so easily and are only perpetuating the problem.

as for services

1. ProtonMail

2. Don't use social media

3. I use fake info for YouTube and everything actually

4. I use DuckDuckGo which does not track

5. I run a VPN at all times on Linux
It's like you're extremely paranoid 24/7
its like I care about my privacy

2. This account is not in any way connected to any of my personal info
Your IP address is available to the staff, and you have your state of living on display. As well as your age.

Unless you're lying/constantly using McDonald's Wi-Fi.
1. VPN at all times

2. Oklahoma is a big fucking state with a lot of 19 year olds

3673
2. Don't use social media

-You're frequenting a forum (social media) that you can't remove your time-stamped posts other than by editing them to be blank, and lacks https security encryption.

So yeah you can use a vpn and all that, but it's easier for big brother to monitor your online activity here, and I'm pretty sure they can calculate based off of your online activities at least pin point your timezone.

You can't always elude data mining, or so it seems.
1. This forum is not social media

2. This account is not in any way connected to any of my personal info

Oh right, I forgot that the Midwest doesn't have fun roads. I bet you faggots don't even get to go deer swerving.
Nigga they are everywhere.

I don't live in fucking Kansas plains. Where I live is thick woods sorta like Arkansas except less hills.

3675
Also the whole "well you're using free software so they have the right to datamine you."

That's the fucking shitties excuse ever. Linux is free and doesn't datamine

3676
And I'm done here. Continue the circle jerk of "Lol Right to Privacy" when you both know that there are plenty of methods you can do to make a difference if you so choose.

Complaining here is not one.
Oh yes because having a discussion about an issue = trying to make a difference

that's not my fucking goal, you idiot

I guess we shouldn't have talked about gay marriage before it became legal.

Fuck I guess we shouldn't discuss anything because its totally pointless.

3677

And stop using "HURRRRR PETITION SCOTUS LOL" as if it's fucking easy for any average person to do.

But it is

If an 83 year old could do it, you have no god damn excuse.

Doesn't really matter since people like you and Turkey exist and make up the general population.

Great attitude. Sure is a good thing the Founding Fathers didn't revolt, because there were loyalist who were fine with the way it was!

 ::)
If Richard Stallman can't do it I sure as hell can't.

3678

So in other words, you're a corporate shill. But no matter how you twist it, it's still an invasion of privacy.

You could literally apply the "you pay for it but it's not yours" to every item you purchase in existence. It's a poor excuse to invade into private information.

It's not "private information" because you are not hosting the data. You are paying for the access, and for the ISP, to host everything you do. They host the data, they hold it's contents. As I said, if you don't like how those rules are you are always welcome to petition the Supreme Court to change the 4th Amendment:

Quote
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures

None of which covers the data ISP's have control over.
That doesn't make it okay

Never said it's okay. My first post was that I don't care because I have nothing to hide. If someone wants to dig through my Gmail emails or my downloads, fine. They'll see that I download Lady Gaga music.

If you really want to make a difference, stop complaining about it on an offshoot website and take legal action. You're perfectly able to as a US citizen to start making a change instead of complaining about how "wahhh it isn't fair!" on a forum.

Apathy is a horrible trait.

The delusion that there is any sort of "right to privacy" is as well.

Oh, so because you don't believe in it means it should be irrelevant for everyone else.

That's probably one of the most retarded things I've ever heard. Just so happens being retarded is a horrible trait, too.

Lol.

The only "definition" of a right to privacy in the United States judicial system is the 4th Amendment - which does not apply to data mining because that data does not belong to you - it belongs to the ISP's that provide you access.

If you are that afraid that you are being violated, the Internet is not a necessity. You chose to use it, you pay for access. What you do is not entitled to any sort of protection.
Contents of my local disk and email do not belong to anyone.

Presumably, your emails are the property and responsibility of Google, but the conditions you agree to give you tacit and explicit, legal ownership over then.

Nobody is stealing your emails or reading them. Your operating system absolutely needs to be able to detect programs and data on your local disk to function, and you absolutely don't have a right to use pirated software.
Just because that's what they say is okay doesn't mean its okay.

I'm sorry, but those files you download? The email provider?

All of that data does not belong to you. You aren't hosting it, the ISP is.

The delusion that it is under the 4th Amendment is laughable. Petition SCOTUS if you want it protected, otherwise you have no "right to privacy" on the Internet.
The fact that you give into that fact so easily is laughable and tells me exactly what I wanted to know from this thread. We are fucked because the general population holds those same views.

I don't care, if Google wants to know when I browse reddit then sure. It really doesn't effect me it's not like they're stealing my money.
do you have a gmail?
Multiple
are you aware all your emails are stored by Google and can be retrieved and read at any time by the NSA and other government organizations right?
Okay it's not like I'm doing anything illegal, emails can be read by anyone. In florida you can request the state to release a complete record of someones emails to the public.
So you'd be okay if someone opened your mailbox and started opening everything and reading it?
All of my emails I literally use for school. If they want to see which classes I'm taking then I don't care.
The contents don't really matter. Its still an invasion of privacy and if you're okay with it that just speaks to how fucked we truly are.
On the internet privacy does not exist, it never has. I understand this but clearly you just learned about it. Everything you do on the internet is recorded by your ISP. It's like buying a phone contract and being baffled when you learn that they track your calls, messages, and location.
Its like there's no possible way to avoid these things, but oh wait there is.

3686
If I continue to demand free services then I don't really have an issue with something as benign as sharing my browsing or shopping trends.
But what about Windows 10 scanning the contents of your local disk and Gmail keeping copies of all your emails? We're talking about practices that go way beyond browsing history

That's not done, though. Not sure where you're getting your information, but clickbait news stories don't count.

"Windows 10 can scan your local disk and disable pirated software."

You're telling me my operating system can detect software on the hard disk it's running off of?

No shit, man. And it absolutely should disable pirated software, that poses a security risk to the user and is also illegal.
Its also an invasion of privacy and nice job dodging the Gmail thing.
