I had a friend of mine recently come back from the Marines. He said its still like that. A lot of "You're a pice of shit" put you down mind games which ends up giving them that "Lol I'm a marine" attitude.
The yelling is the part they nailed perfectly, yeah. Basically the mindset is, if you can't handle someone yelling in your ear, how the hell are you going to deal with gunfire going off around you?
But the hitting, abuse, all of that? No, if Drill Instructors so much as lay a finger on you, they'll get in so much trouble you wouldn't even know it. I know back then there were reports of abuses, but today is a no no.

I'm not sure. I can see the benefits of it, but I've never been a fan of FORCING someone to do something they more or less wouldn't want to do. I'm 50/50 on it. There is only so much 5 and a half months of training can do for you in the real world aside from combat too.
The sole benefit in my opinion is giving your entire population the useful skills one learns in military training. Not just skills in the common sense but also character building. If you've ever met someone that went into the military being a complete jackass (I've met a few personally) it really changes them for the better. Of course this is why I also think mandatory service really only works for nations that keep their military for a purely defensive purpose. You don't want to go giving your entire population PTSD. So another reason it would never work for the US or superpowers in general. Its definitely a specialized thing but given the necessary environment exists I think its entirely beneficial.

Military? No. What purpose would that serve? Our military is already too big.
It would probably be beneficial if we had some sort of mandatory public works program, though.
Mandatory service really only works if your military is composed only of that. So it wouldn't work in the US at all where we are currently sitting. It also arguably works a lot better if the country in question is more neutral which we definitely aren't. Also only works in smaller countries, it would never work in the US.
