To be fair, the only reason John is relevant at all is because he's needed to carry Cortana from place to place. If she could move from system to system on her own, she could have won every confrontation in every game on her own with about a tenth of the casualties.
Which begs the question: Why doesn't the UNSC utilize autonomous AI attack platforms? Are 26th century Commanders still afraid of self aware robots, or are AI too expensive to risk being destroyed in the field? I guess robotic units would complicate the Cole Protocol.
