Firefight in ODST didn't last long, you're right, but I'm convinced a matchmaking system of any kind would have saved the game from fizzling out of the LIVE population. That version of firefight was downright fun when it wasn't immeasurably irritating and stressful, especially when the high-level skulls turned on.
The thing that makes ODST firefight fucking unplayable with me is the god damn Black eye skull. I can fight anything off as long as my screen isn't blood red. Christ it's annoying.
