If it's by blowing them up it's not going to work as great as you think. You're still going to have around the same mass coming down to earth and since the asteroid is broken up you're going to have pieces coming down which would do even more damage.
I meant deflecting them. Given enough time (decades or maybe centuries in advanced though) nuclear detonations would chance the trajectory enough to avoid an impact.

Well it's to late to get rid of them now...unfortunate, since they are such horrific weapons indeed.
Sure the threat of MAD has deterred a lot of potential major fighting, but I don't think it's a good trade off for the ever present potential annihilation of the vast majority of life on earth...although their potential to stop asteroid collisions may be a it closer to a considerable trade off.

I'm playing through the game once again. My only complaint is how crazy some of the endgame challenges are like getting strait gold in the arcade with the chick robo, and getting all the illegal parts is such a grind fest, especially after you have to just fork over 500 dollars just to fight that one cop. And it sucks that there's no new game plus like there was in the GameCube version, that one also still holds up great.

If I were you I'd replace Power Up Punch with either Flash Cannon or an Ice Punch
In my experience, coverage moves determine the tides of battle, and Ice Punch with Metacross saved me a few times
