that's the most incorrect thing i've read all month
Clearly not.
That seems to only mention online articles.  I think what the others were talking about was TV Broadcasting.

The Flood / Re: Do you like Marvel films?

Superhero movies were oversaturated by the time the first Avengers came out
Yeah, all of those 2 Marvel movies released per year is just too much.
I can go on and on. For a film franchise to produce a new movie every six months on average, that's unprecedented--especially when you consider the budget and scope of each film.

But what makes the Marvel movies different the franchises you listed is that these movies have different directors, characters, settings, themes, tones, ect.  If James Bond had 1 movie a year and every other year a film featuring a female agent lead with a unique character, it wouldn't be that bad.

Stars seems to be doing something similar with Rogue One and movie 8.

One of the problems is that the Internet is not limited to reputable information.  So along with cited and scrutinized information, there is also studies and blogs and communities expousing absolute bullshit.

This compounded with hive-minded online communities who are nothing more than echo-chambers, these people are never exposed to conflicting opinion.

Then, at least in America, their is a growing divisiveness (politically).

There seem to be a lot of factors that have slowly been building this resilience to reason and hard headedness.

Morality doesn't exist on an objective level.
Don't respond for 24 hours if you're spooked.
All non-theistic moral systems are based on arbitrary values that have no inherent worth.

I would say all moral systems are based on arbitrary values because "inherent worth" - just like "objective value" - is a self contradicting term.  A value requires a valuer, whether it be a god, a human, or an alien.  God is a subjective agent.

They always boil down to some bullshit like "pain is bad", shit that is ultimately a matter of opinion and personal interpretation.

I wonder what purpose Hell being described as a sea of fire has to do with my natural aversion to pain  :-\

Quote
That isn't to say morality is subjective, because that's kind of retarded. The validity of moral systems is subjective in practice, but the truth is inherent morality doesn't exist, it is a fixed idea some guy came up with and sold to the rest of the world.

Agreed

What is the distinction between the bias associated with attractiveness and social status?  If someone can be biased/influenced due to the status of the person they like in a company, what makes that different from a really attractive person influencing/introducing bias into someone's decision?

The presence of bias seems inevitable in a relationship.  Why legislate against one form and not others?

yep.  As long as our race is going to continue, having robots would seem to be the next big leap for us.  Robot diplomats free from bribes - preventing corruption and wars, robot scientists working literally 24/7 - processing things far faster than any human could hope to - curing diseases, medically being more proficent than human doctors, etc.

Serious / Re: Who is going to win the General Election?
« on: May 27, 2016, 02:43:32 PM »
I think Hillary will crush Trump.

Trump is a one-trick pony. It worked out well for him in the primaries, but for a general election? I don't think so. I think enough people will realize how utterly full of shit Trump is so that he won't actually win the election. Name calling and conspiracy theories can only get you so far.

The Sanders v Trump debate will be the testing ground for that.

Not so sure it'll happen.  Trump is asking for the host TV network to donate $10 million dollars to charity.

Yo jive or any other lifter here, I had multiple surgeries on my left forearm and its significantly less well defined and slightly smaller than my right forearm. Is there any good exercise to target forearm specifically? When I was super skinny it wasn't that noticable but now that my bis and tris and gaining some mass I think it looks a little strange.
Skull crushers and reverse curls would work the forearm.  It's better to do compound exercises as a natural for muscle, at least if you haven't trained properly for around a year, so you could stick one of the aforementioned exercises in with things like dead lift and pull ups.

It was because men and women agreed with the argument that everyone deserves bodily autonomy.
Not sure what world you're living in, but the fact it's against the law to do drugs, infants are circumcised, and a person cannot attempt suicide without the legal system trying to deter it from happening show that the US doesn't give the slightest fuck about bodily autonomy.

There is a little more nuance to it than what I initially said.  There is a different context to those topics.  Abortion doesn't exactly have anything similar to Tobacco and Alcohol lobbyists buying favors.

There's also the fact that just because someone is rational on one topic does not mean they are absolutely rational on all topics all the time.

204
With feminism for example, there is more to their position than "I'm a women, therefore I know more".

Women weren't given the right to abortions simply for being women.  It was because men and women agreed with the argument that everyone deserves bodily autonomy and that abortion is a method to fulfill that.

I would still say no one should be lose credibility for their skin color, gender, etc.

Would you say a math student is a more reliable source of information about math than an arts student? Then wouldn't a woman generally (and not exclusively) be somewhat more reliable when talking about women's issues?

There's an intuitive feeling to say yes, but I would need more than a generic title.  For all I know, this is a first year math student who is failing; against an arts student who took equal or higher level math as part of their degree or for supplemental study and did well.  Then there is the chance that if they did have good grades, they cheated or on had an easier class.

If one were to ask, who is more knowledgeableble between 2 people of the same group, what would we need to do to find out who is more credible? I say it's to hear them out.

To really gauge their ability, there would have to be some metric to compare them by, otherwise - how would we know for sure?  A test in this case would be analogous to hearing out someone's argument.

So back to your question, I would say that people have stereotypes that are sometimes accurate/justified.

My position though is that when arguing things like philosophy or politics, someone's birth given traits hold no weight to their argument, and that we end up needing to assess their arguments anyways, so we might as well hold back our opinion until after they fail to make a sound argument.

206
I don't think that merely being the opposite gender should negatively influence someone's credibility or mean that people should dismiss them.
i'm not saying i dismiss them, i'm saying i take them less seriously, and the degree to which i take them less seriously can vary
I was good up until I tacked that part on.  I would still say no one should be lose credibility for their skin color, gender, etc.

It seems bigoted and divisive.  I mean, I might reluctantly set my expections low for someone based off certain stereotypes - but I don't think it should be expected or accepted.  Once I hear their argument, then I adjust how serious I take them.

As an example, something brought up religion at work and the authority of the bible and how one could determine what rules to follow.  My two coworkers were religious.

One was a fence sitter, essentially saying "I don't know man, it's interesting".

The other said that God personally speaks to them and tells them which parts of the bible "are true"

Lets just say I adjusted my expectations accordingly.

also, do you always type two spaces after punctuation? because i'm just catching onto it, and it's really bothering me

Yeah, that's how I was taught to type formally and I just keep it out of habit.

207
I don't think that merely being the opposite gender should negatively influence someone's credibility or mean that people should dismiss them.  It opens the door for bias.  Facts and logic are genderless (tips fedora).  If a man is wrong about a gender issue, anyone should be able to gauge his claims based off the two.  Vice versa, if a woman claims to know more or be right about a subject, she should be able to demonstrate or provide the means of how she came her conclusion.

It's almost like an appeal to authority.  It would seem similar as to say poor people shouldn't have a valid opinion on rules for the rich because they themselves are not or that atheists who haven't "experienced" God be immediately docked points.
