I was just confusing it with opiates because of the prevalence of them in the middle east (Poppy fields etc)
Funny thing is that the middle east is where most of these drugs propagated and became popular during the golden age of Islam. From Marijuana to Coffee etc. And now it is banned there. Marijuana if i am right was used heavily by scholars during the earlier days. Actually i think a better discussion would be the history of mind altering drugs and where they originated and gain popularity.
