The Flood / BD Drive problems.
« on: February 20, 2016, 01:22:47 PM »
So I just finished my brand new build, but one thing is driving me crazy. The BD drive and getting its firmware update. I need to install the latest firmware (which for this model was four years ago) in order to play movies on the computer, but as soon as I run the setup, nothing happens. The icon appears for a split second on the task bar then disappears and nothing continues to happen.

I don't want to have to pay money for software that I should have gotten for free on the disc but the installer refuses to open up. I don't know what to do.

The Flood / AMA My bank account just exploded, AMA
« on: February 14, 2016, 12:19:44 AM »
So when attempting to order all my PC parts, what happened can only be described as a cluster fuck.

1. The order of all items was split into four smaller orders, because Newegg doesn't carry all the parts with them, some come from a third party seller which has different shipping options, the bulk of the items did end up in one order with the total equaling about 1400 dollars.

2. Because this would be the first time in my bank account history making an order over 1000 dollars, BoA online immediately declined the first transaction but let the other three go through because they were all significantly smaller amounts (this is ignoring the fact that I had temporarily removed any alerts because I suspected this very thing would happen).

3. After going to my BoA account and verifying everything is fine, I spent the next 45 minutes trying to get Newegg to reattempt the transaction, only to have it declined once again because it's still too scary of a transaction for BoA. I have decided to cancel that specific order until my BoA account goes back to normal, in which case, I'll just buy the remaining parts in increments no greater than 600 dollars since the most expensive item breaks 500.

4. Back when I ordered NGE on Blu-ray, CDJapan has a nasty habit of having their orders disappear off my bank account for a solid month or two, so for the past two weeks, my account is showing I have about 550 dollars more than what I really have because it currently isn't showing my purchase from CDJapan.

5. Lastly, someone or something has gotten into my Paypal and requested 300 dollars be transferred into my Paypal account from my bank account, and their customer service is just as shitty as BoA, I wont be able to call either until tomorrow. Also unlike BoA which has a seizure and immediately shuts down the transaction it freaks out over, Paypal sees suspicious activity and just lets it continue and only messages me that it's happening. I have until Friday to get it removed or I'm fucked six ways since Sunday. This is ignoring the fact that I removed my bank account information from my Paypal account months ago, there's no way it should be able to have the power still.

So right now I'm kind of left with a mess and no way to clean it up. AMA I guess.

My taxes came back so I now have the money I need to finally order my parts. Before I go and make myself almost broke, I would like someone to double check the parts I picked out (since they changed a bit from when I last made this thread) and see if they will all play nice together and work fine.

The Flood / PC Parts help
« on: February 07, 2016, 07:47:56 PM »
So I want to avoid going to /g/ because of the snobby elitism, yet I don't browse any other sites except for you guys and Evageeks, and the latter is still too busy imploding into itself over the upcoming Godzilla film to warrant asking for their help.

So when I got the current PC I have, I basically gave my brother my budget, and he picked out the parts and put it together for me. I now want to move up from what I currently have and I have more than double my original budget from over a year ago. I have up 1800 dollars (including priority shipping). And I have already picked out all the parts and I just need a group of people knowledgeable to run through my list of parts and do a last minute review to make sure all the parts I'm getting will play nice with each other is ultimately what I'll be happy with.

All parts will be ordered on Newegg since I want them all to come at once together and I don't want to track multiple packages if I don't have to.

Components:

Case: Corsair Graphite series 760T black
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI LGA 1150
CPU: Intel i5 4690
GPU: MSI Geforce GTX 970
PSU: EVGA 80+ Bronze 850W
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
HDD: 2x WD Blue 1TB Hard Drives
SSD: Samsung 840 EVO 250GB
Reader: ASUS Black Blu-ray Drive
Monitor: ASUS VX248H Black 24"
Other: Blue LED stick

Total: $1,523.03

Any items not listed (such as an OS or additional fans) I already have ready to be installed with me.

Some questions I already have:

1. I chose MSI because it came with 1 HDMI port and 2 DVI ports. I currently already have the same monitor I plan on buying and another Acer monitor but I don't know what type it is. I wanted to get a third for a triple monitor setup so I looked for whatever had two DVI ports. However the GPU's DVI ports say DVI-I and DVI-D, will there be any problems with set up?

2. I've looked at the reviews for all of these products and one thing I took note on is that people went apeshit in the reviews for every DVD/BD drive I looked at bitching about needing third party software for burning discs. I have no interest in burning and simply want to watch DVD and BD shows on my computer from time to time. Will a third party program be needed for that?

3. For the DVD/BD drive, none of the products display what region it's set for. How do I find this out?

Gaming / I'm installing WoW right now
« on: January 30, 2016, 07:47:48 PM »
As far as MMO's go, with FFXI's population about to be shot in the leg even more this March, XIV being in a insane content drought, and TOR being TOR, the only ship left standing is the one that considers itself a failure despite having 5x the active subscribers (and daily populations) than the previously three mentioned titles combined.

Try and convince me that I'm making a huge mistake.

The Flood / DVD region codes
« on: January 24, 2016, 03:58:50 PM »
So I'm about to import a DVD boxset from Japan, the problem is that Japan is region code 2 and the US is region code 1. I've looked online to see if either my PS3 or XB1 could have it's DVD region settings changed but I keep getting conflicting answers with some saying they're playing different region DVD's on theirs and others saying it's locked and the issue is too small to have a general issue answer.

I'd really rather not have to go on Amazon and buy a region free DVD/BD (I already know everything about BD region coding) since the box set is already going to break the bank slightly so I was wondering if any of you guys knew about whether or not some systems region settings can be changed.
