And, er, sorry Deci, but they're absolutely right when they say humanity's niche is its ability to make tool. It's how we even out (and more so) the physical playing field with other predators.

But think about it. What if we didn't have this ability to create tools? How would you expect the human race to survive let alone adapt?
That's a terrible hypothetical...

4 hours? Jeez... That must have been a marathon. >.> Good on you though.
As for his justification that is some of the silliest reason I've heard to date. That literally could have been anything explainable...

Yeah. It went from sexuality to anti-natalism to religious beliefs. Good time, though. I enjoy that sort of thing, you know that. I'm much better at arguing in person, IMO.

Well, I mean, it's not that "science" can explain how his aunt floated off the ground that makes me not believe him. It's that I don't believe that happened at all.
Heh that's true.

Well yea. I was also implying that just a little bit. :P

Dude. I was at Matt's house and we had a 4 hour long discussion about how he's "religious" or whatever.

The only justification he could come up with was that he saw his aunt rise off the table when he was a kid.

Meanwhile, he had just explained to me that if God had revealed himself to me, that would interfere with my "free will". Why was it okay for God to show Matt and not me?

Some people, man.

What if I considered myself a theist but did not follow any religion?

I would ask you why you were a theist.

Probably mostly because I was raised to believe in a deity, so it was hard for me to abandon my beliefs. While over the years I've come to the conclusion that organized religion is ridiculous, I've never seen much compelling evidence against the possibility of a deity/deities existing. I suppose I would more accurately be described as an agnostic.

In any case, hypothetically, I think that a deity would be very different than how most people see their God.

Sorry, I thought I would have something more thought-provoking to say but I'm drawing blanks.

You bringing up your childhood clears a lot of things up. I still have to remind myself that there is no evidence for god from time to time because it was programmed into me as a kid.

I don't really think you can identify just as agnostic. You're either a thiestic-agnostic (IE, I don't know whether god exists or not but I'm pretty sure he does because Pascal's wager [and even this is a bit of a stretch. belief isn't a choice, contrary to popular belief]) and atheistic-agnostism (me), that believes that there is no evidence for god, but we can't know for sure.
Yea this part a lot.
It kinda just gets to you after a certain amount of hearing about it. Just gotta pinch yourself sometimes.

Over the first couple of years, it was pretty bad. Anytime I would get scared or need something, I'd turn to "god".

Now it's not really even a thought.

I just wish people would have some evidence for their beliefs. It irks me when someone believes something baselessly. I mean, if you are an advocate for something, you should be able to tell me why, right? Everything i do, every action I take, I have a reason. If I don't, I find out what my reason should be. If I can't find that out, I don't do it.
Yea, it seems a lot of people have that answer of "Well my parents taught me" or something akin to that. Some reasoning would be extremely fresh to hear.
[Don't even get me started on some of the excuses people have said... Oy vey.]

If there's one thing that really annoys me it's when people underestimate the tenacity and ingenuity of humans.

All we have are tenacity and ingenuity. We're fortunate that those make up for us being one of the weakest, slowest, least physically accustomed species among those at the upper portion of the food chain.
You know ancient humans used to hunt by chasing their prey until it dropped dead from exhaustion right?
VSause has taught me many things.
This is one of them.

I disagree with you.

Elaborate.
Well you see your entire argument is that human engineering won't find a way to negate those negative effects on us.
Science is powerful bro.

It's all about random chance at the end though. We're not smart enough as a species to over come many things, and there is still so much unknown out in the vast void of space. We don't even know our own planet inside out, our oceans haven't even been fully explored.

We're just as clueless as the rest of the animals that walk the earth except we have a mind to adapt with instead of just wandering around like a lost animal, but even at that we still have flaws in our system.

For instance, 5 years from now there is a chance that a meteorite that's the size if Manhattan New York is going to hit the earth leaving a massive crater killing all of us off in the process.

I haven't heard anything about it since 2005, and to be honest that's what scares me the most then the stupid bullshit that went on with the world ending in 2012. Oh and the world actually could have ended on July 23rd of 2012 instead. We were a few inches away of our planet becoming fried matter from the sun from what I've heard. I'm not sure just how true it is, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Oh, and if humanity is still alive when our sun is dying, good luck trying to survive that. It will wipe everything out of it's path when it explodes.
Okay, the Sun isn't going to explode, learn astronomy please, this stuff triggers me. Edit with more will come, but I had to say that.

In this life time? No. The Sun won't explode. I'm talking about later on.

Please study your science carefully.
I will cut you the fuck up, do not mess with me on this. The sun is not of sufficient mass to explode. It will enlarge to a red giant, then go to a white dwarf.

If that's what you seriously believe then I do feel sorry for your great great great great great great (you get the idea) grandkids should humanity be around long enough to even witness that.
No. It's the simple fact that that is literally [LITERALLY] BILLIONS of years away. Billions. Do you even understand how long that is? I certainly can't comprehend it. We would be loooong gone from Earth before we even had a chance at being fried in a supernova or be frozen from lack of heat with a white dwarf.

That is unless we find ways to live underground and adapt to the harsh environment. But I wouldn't be surprise if the whole human race just got nuked overnight. There is also that possibility of countries launching nukes. Let's hope no one is really stupid enough to use them.
Why on Earth would we do that? We have the capability to colonize planets, solar systems, etc. I know I'm going  a little "pie in the sky" right now but it really is a possibility.
If Jurassic Park taught me anything, it's that life always finds a way.

if you spell "Quran" backwards and replace the N with a B you get Baruq

which when translated into kenyan means Barack

You hate the internet because there's a story of a person treating someone with down syndrome as a human being?
Read the ending
Oh now I see.

If that's a reason to hate the internet, a stupid story, then OP must have a horrible time doing anything on here.
I think OP is exaggerating just a little bit eh?

I feel like some people are misinterpreting what this thread was made for.  BC probably made this to explain that even though he is quite well off, it isn't the money that makes him happy. =/
