From a purely neutral standpoint this is quite the assumption to make. On a base level I believe communication in person is different than through text so to make the decision prior to even considering who it is, is a tad irresponsible.

Meeting someone you've talked to, but never spoken to, is weird to me and it would throw me off a little to say the least
theoretically, you could use something like discord to help ease into it
not that you will or should, just saying, it's possible
That's a pretty decent progression if you need it. Text to voice to video to in person. However when you boil it down you're just trying to make it comfortable. Whether you throw yourself into the fire and use some wonderful exposure therapy or do a graduated thing is still accomplishing the same goal.

At risk of backtracking, this is why I wouldn't do it first and foremost. I don't try to intentionally put myself in awkward situations without a clear benefit, and I don't see any clear benefit from this. It would be a story, and that's about it.

I wanted to be a doctor but having narcolepsy stopped that. Funnily enough not teaching, anything outside of exams anyway
Well that's a shame... I don't think I've talked to anyone with narcolepsy, just read about it in Psych 101. I'm surprised it's a force enough to necessitate switching career paths. I do two courses, one for learning and teaching in a LSA form, meaning it's curriculum support and I help the children with learning disabilities, two days a week; then the other is Animation and illustration as a BTEC, two days
So you still get to work with people then, sounds up your alley considering the physician route you wanted.

it's just not that easy for some people to "move on"
and then you have people like me, who get told things like that, and then actively search for reasons to get emotionally destroyed, because it's more satisfying to be right
