You do realize they're trying to calm your anxieties about driving? Good god dude. No, they're not "trying" anything. They're exerting the minimum effort to say, "You don't matter enough to me to tell you the straight-up truth, so I'm going to engage in meaningless niceties that society has deemed 'polite' so I can convince myself that I'm a good, honest, helpful, and thoughtful person."
It just communicates to me that they don't give a fuck about me or my feelings.
Which, no one has to. I just wish people were more honest about it.
Well personally when I was anxious about driving it made me a worse driver. The more comfortable you are (to a degree) the better you are. So if anyone were to come to me with the issues you're having over driving I would try and calm their anxieties in an effort to make driving less stressful. That's not minimum effort. That's not me trying to get you away from me as soon as possible. It's a conscious effort to try and make it seem more manageable.

I was actually really hoping that I'd get in a crash the first time I went on the road--just so I could see the faces of all those fucking idiots who said shit like, "You'll be fine" and "Driving is fun, you won't crash" to me. Just lazy bullshit lies that I would be perfectly cool with proving wrong. Just to see how much they care when I actually do get in a crash. Just to see what platitudes they'll say then.
If no one can just look me in the eye and tell me the truth--"You might get in a crash if you're not careful"--that's all anyone has ever had to say to me, but they haven't--if no one can say that, I'd love to see what they'd say then.
