Deci felt the taste of everything he once loved go away. The chocolate had no rich flavor, the fizzy sodas had no sweetness.
Religion no longer had the comforting effect it used to have after his aunt started relentlessly tormenting him.
He felt anger and shame whenever he passed by churches. The pastor saw him falling deeper and deeper into the cage of his own mind and tried to turn him away into the light. His dark brown eyes felt dread each time Deci would shake in fear and regret during the service.
In the end nothing could stop Deci's path. A former lover came to him, trying to stop him from making the decision that would end his broken life. Not even she, whom Deci once claimed could stand in the path of raining volcanic ash if she so willed, could lead him away.
In the moment he challenged all which had struck him down in events from the past, everything was calm. His hands stopped trembling. His breathing came strong and with pride. There was something about him that changed in that moment.

But the ground had already come.
In his final moment for the first time in his short life, he smiled.
A familiar blackness filled his vision as the sound of ambulances rocked him into his final sleep
