... and satanic imagery? So many synthwave album covers involve it in some fashion, and I don't know why. My only guess is that it's because a lot of late 70's and 80's horror movies had synthesizer soundtracks.

The Flood / My Statistics Professor Was Arrested...

... For having sexual relations with a student when she was a high school teacher.

On Oct. 17th, she started teaching a Statistics express course at Collin Community College. She said that she had been a high school teacher "last year", not mentioning that she had only ceased being a high school teacher 16 days prior.

On Nov. 19th, she sent out a message to all of us saying she "felt ill". She sent out a similar message the next class.

The class after that, we learned from the Assistant Dean that she had called that day telling the administration she wouldn't bs able to finish the semester. We now know why.

Ends up she had actually neglected to teach us anything beyond the basic concepts, so we are very behind. This explains why I was actually doing somewhat well in a math class.

I've only played a bit of the first one (I beat the asylum demon and didn't ever best the second boss).

The Flood / I should have looked into what these were...

Not knowing exactly what they they were, and expecting them to be just regular spring rolls, I ordered "Vietnamese Spring Rolls" from my local takeout place...

They look like noodles, shrimp, and pork bundled up inside condoms.

Given that I don't like shrimp I won't be eating them. I suppose this is a lesson; know what something is before you order it.

Was listening to some of his songs on Spotify and damn, I had forgotten how good he was.

I find that I am partial to his more melancholy tunes, such as 'Hurt' and 'God's Gonna Cut You Down'.

I suppose I find West Texas/Panhandle accents somewhat charming as well, but less so than those I previously mentioned.

The Flood / explicit content in TV programs irritates me
« on: October 22, 2016, 03:15:50 AM »
I was watching Narcos season 2 on Netflix, and after several highly explicit scenes, I just stopped. I realized that I was hurting myself.

Content like that makes me uncomfortable, and only serves to put me in a bad mood, and negatively effects my opinion of people in general.

I like thinking I live in a sterile, sexless world. I feel as though life is like Mr. Roger's neighborhood. Everyone is sincere and nice, I smile at people and they smile back, I say "have a nice day!" and everything is well and good.

When I see explicit content, that illusion is ripped away and I feel as though I live in the damn red light district of Amsterdam. Everything feels filthy and abhorrent. There is no innocence, nothing is sincere.

Why put myself through that? Why make myself more jaded? There's no point.

Sorry this turned into an incoherent rant; I am tired. I dunno, you all probably disagree and think I'm some bizarre mental case but whatever. Hey, at least it's a thread; we could certainly use more of those.

The Flood / Painting miniatures is very tedious
« on: September 19, 2016, 10:45:08 PM »
Black Templars are primarily only black and white but damn, getting the paint job looking neat is such a pain. That's not even taking into consideration the little details such as the lenses of the helmets, the leather holsters, and tabards. I am not terrible at it by any means, and the fact that the primary color of the miniatures is black certainly makes everything easier.

Still, it's frustrating at times and I wish that I had immediately painted a set of models hat I had purchased, and then ought he next and painted them, and so on and so forth. Instead, I waited until I had bought the entirety of my starter army before painting them, so I have a total of 27-29 models to paint.

The Flood / Depressing interactions you have had with people?
« on: September 19, 2016, 08:32:13 PM »
The other day I went to my local Games Workshop store to watch some people play 40k and discuss the army I am building (Black Templar Space Marines) with experienced players.

There was a guy there who was very friendly and nice. I was talking with him about my army, and he suddenly decided that I needed a model of High Chaplain Grimaldus (at no point had I stated a desire for this model or anything). He then bought a chaplain model to use as a proxy for Grimaldus. I was stunned that he would just buy a model for a perfect stranger.

Later, I would overhear him in conversation with the guy who works at the shop. The guy who bought the model for me has thyroid cancer.

I just felt very uncomfortable with his generosity. Not because I got any creepy vibes from the guy, but because his behavior made me feel very sad, and I suspect that he has done this before, which strikes me as somewhat self-destructive.

What interactions have you had with others that have made you feel somewhat depressed, and made you empathetic towards others?

I knew she and her husband made a web-series but I didn't know it was this successful. I haven't watched any of their videos but knowing what they're like, I have a pretty good idea. They are very... Hipster-esque. Their show is called Gone with The Wynns; they make videos about travelling.

So yeah, now I know part of how they have been making money this whole time. I just haven't paid attention for the last few years. It doesn't help that because they travel I haven't seen them in a while.

Just curious. I bought a tactical marine squad on eBay (far less than the ridiculous GW prices). All of what you need to play is kind of overwhelming.

Gaming / Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War III
« on: August 16, 2016, 03:56:37 PM »
After seeing some gameplay, I am quite excited for this game. They have brought back base building and large armies, making the game feel much more like the first game and its expansions.

Here is twenty minutes of gameplay, sorry if you find the commentary annoying:

YouTube

The section in the video that I find interesting is the last third or so. We can see that they have indeed brought back large armies, with the end of this mission have a total unit cap of around 200.

I must say, while I am excited by the prospect of a return to the gameplay of the first DoW, I am not too keen in their new art style. It is too colorful and I find the intensity of the laser fire and all of the glowing stuff to be distracting. When the dreadnought engages in melee combat, there is a weird visual effect that occurs, which strikes me as cartoon-y and contrary to the style and atmosphere of 40k. When a dreadnought crushes an opponent with its hands, it shouldn't have a strange energy effect marking its attacks; it should be blunt, brutal. Gabriel Angelos' melee animations are too... "acrobatic", or elaborate. They remind me of the over-choreographed dance routines of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. In general this new art style reminds me of one of my least favorite genres; MOBA's. Hopefully the cartoon-y swishy-energy effects that marks units' attacks will be removable through mods.

Unfortunately, the only factions in the base game will be the Spess Maureens, space elves, and Orks. While I am disappointed by the lack of Chaos, the Imperial Guard, Necrons, or other factions, I am still looking forward to the release of the game. It's not surprising that we don't have some of the factions, as all of the DoW games have added more factions later through hefty expansions. However, previous titles have launched with four factions, whereas III has, well, III.

Still, I am quite excited for the game.

Gaming / I've been playing Dawn of War 1 recently
« on: August 11, 2016, 02:45:04 PM »
It's very fun. I have all the expansions, as well as Dawn of War II and it's expansions (although my computer cannot run them).

I only recently started playing it, and I am on mission six of the campaign. So far it hasn't been too challenging, as the ability to quickly create new squads and assets makes everything a bit easy. From what I understand, Dawn of War II exchanges these massive battles for more squad-based comabt, and you can't create new units; I imagine that it is more challenging as a result of this.

I am excited for Dawn of War III, by the time that comes out I will probably have a decent PC. It sounds like III will be a fun mix of I and II in regards to gameplay. In regards to visuals, however, based on what has been seen so far III has a MOBA-esque visual style that I am not too keen on.

I may or may not have a copy of Dawn of War I that I could gift to someone via Steam; depends on whether the person I originally gifted it to wants it.

The Flood / Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
« on: August 08, 2016, 06:27:35 PM »
I rewatched this film a couple days ago, and I was reminded of how good it really is. Its age is definitely noticeable, but that in no way reflects negatively upon its quality or entertainment value.

Khan Noonien Singh is such a great villain, and Montalbán's performance and the various details of the character and his background reminded me of how disappointing I found Benedict Cumberbunch as Khan.

The acting isn't the best at times (Kirstie Alley is pretty bad), but when the film really needs to work on an emotional level, it does.

The Wrath of Khan is one of my favorite movies, and I decided to purchase it on Blu-Ray today, making it one of the few films I own a physical copy of.

Great movie. Didn't like it as much as Blue Ruin but I still really enjoyed it. Probably one of the most intense films I've seen in recent years.

I was slightly disappointed by Sir Patrick Stewart's performance; he has such dramatic range as an actor but only spoke in the same quiet tone of voice the entire time.

The blonde girl was totally awesome.
