It's what made the ending hurt so bad for me. I stumbled onto that leak, and figured, "Eh, these are usually bullshit anyway, why not have some fun?"
Come a few months later the tears were real. I don't take most leaks seriously. But for bioware I am now making a strong exception. Of course, Being completely fair I won't be getting ME4 anyway.

Rex was witness to a clone who had his chip removed, learned of Palpatine's plot, and then in a drugged state tried to explain it but was killed. Evidently, Rex put the pieces together and told Commander Wolffe and some other clones what was going on, and they had the bio chips removed.

He knew about the chips, but possibly not Order 66.
He may have been questioning things about his purpose, etc. And simply decided to have the chip removed, gone AWOL, and later discovered what one of the "trigger phrases" served to do after or during Order 66.
