Gaming / Re: You think next gen or even this gen is going to be the last console generation?« on: January 19, 2015, 04:58:30 PM »I was more referring to her case in particular, because she's a serious collector. With a particular fetish for boxes. She values the boxes with the same amount as the game itself--she won't even play the game if she doesn't have the box to go with it. Right?Ah that's makes more sense then. I hate boxes with a passion, but love (and miss) box art / guides. I could understand a collector not wanting to jump. 2283
Gaming / Re: You think next gen or even this gen is going to be the last console generation?« on: January 19, 2015, 04:48:23 PM »...You don't understand.I understand your desire to 'physically own it', and the perks that come with that. Just makes more sense for me to go digital. I don't typically sell or loan out my games. Not being able to return them does suck (looking at you destiny), but I usually do enough research to where that's not a problem. As far as physically having it goes I have it on the hard drive. Same as music, books and movies. Don't have to worry about it being scratched this way either. Plus you can download it to multiple devices, easier traveling, streaming to Vita, etc. Just a better system in my eyes. 2284
Gaming / Re: You think next gen or even this gen is going to be the last console generation?« on: January 19, 2015, 04:41:19 PM »The day consoles drop physical media is the day I stop buying them.Bought my ps4 at launch, and I've yet to see if the disc drive works. Slapped a 2TB in there and called it a day. You don't realize how annoying discs are until you get rid of them. 2285
Gaming / Re: You think next gen or even this gen is going to be the last console generation?« on: January 19, 2015, 03:22:29 PM »
We might finally make the jump to fully digital though that'll depend on how much the big three are willing to give in that debate. Returns, sharing, etc. Eventually discs will be phased out though. (I'm already there myself)
I don't see us moving away from dedicated hardware in the next 10-15 years. I don't know anyone who would rather stream their games, especially with infrastructure being what it is (not to mention ownership/consumer rights), so dedicated hardware is going to remain a thing for the foreseeable future. 2286

The Flood / Re: GAMERGATE: Keep fighting, keep winning« on: January 18, 2015, 08:21:59 PM »Comparing the plate to the game as a whole is a really bad metaphor that doesn't make sense. The plate is not part of the sculpture while the music, story, artstyle, etc all make the game. Essentially those elements are the clay in this bad comparison. And the developers are the shitty 12 yo slapping them together. Whether they make a plate, a beautiful sculpture, or a dildo its still art. You don't have to like it for it to be art. (though this metaphor is beginning to cross into making 'tools' which is why its such a bad comparison)Reads like you're attempting to narrow the definition to not include video games for some reason.Art isn't defined by such a narrow definition. Again whether it is violent or not, and whether you find the violence reprehensible or not is irrelevant. You can still criticize art. People make a living doing it. You can still criticize violence in a game. Just as people are able to disagree with those criticisms. Like all other forms of art. I don't understand your insinuation that because games are art they are some how free of scrutiny. Art is some of the most scrutinized stuff on the planet. Edit: The video is criticizing those who think violence or controversy are inherently taboo in art. People who would censor the artists for causing offence. At the end of the day the artist is able to make whatever they want, and while you are free to criticize they are not beholden to make their game the way the critic wants. 2289

The Flood / Re: GAMERGATE: Keep fighting, keep winning« on: January 18, 2015, 08:07:54 PM »Admittedly I stopped to reply a couple minutes into the video, but do any of you seriously see video games necessarily as art? I mean, the designs are art. The music is art. The story is probably artful, and clearly the creative process of making a game is an act of artistry, but the typical video game itself is hardly art. A museum isn't art just because it exists to showcase artistic projects. This always seems like such a weak argument to offense taken at the violence seen in some games, as if shooting up a city is somehow less tasteless because it's animated.Art isn't defined by such a narrow definition. It doesn't have to be a timeless classic to be art. Shitty sculptures kids make in middle school art class qualify as art. Someone finding it tasteless or offensive is absolutely inconsequential. Movies, music, books, video games. These are all artistic mediums. 2291

Gaming / Re: Hatred recieves 'Adults Only' rating« on: January 18, 2015, 10:54:42 AM »I think that's a reflection of how young it is as well. You don't see people demanding NC-17 movies not be shown in theaters. Most theaters even decide for themselves whether or not to let 17yo's in. Yet the second a game like hatred turns up everyone clamps down and self censors for fear of backlash. Because games are still widely viewed as children's toys, and as 'potentially dangerous' despite the scientific evidence against that.I don't think it's reflective of the industry, but rather demonstrative of the power that soccer moms hold over retailers and console makers.*second game to do so based on violence. Obviously porn games exist.Second ever adult rating in the history of gaming.False. They haven't really been normalized yet with the mainstream, and that's something that only comes with time. Like kids now a days are growing up watching minecraft on their smart phones. Hatred isn't going to scare them when they're 40. |
