Well if they don't remove historical artifacts and artwork, how will we continue the fabrication that the Civil War was fought by Righteous Northerners to stop those mean southerners from owning slaves?

Is Outbound Flight in the novel?
The novel doesn't actually use any of the Legacy novels for material, so nothing from previous Thrawn books is in this one -- it's all focused around a new story and set of characters.

Halfway through this book, which I'm reading because EU novel fans (which I'm not) froth at the mouth over Timothy Zahn and finally seeing Thrawn brought back into canon. But damn, this book fucking sucks. It's passable as far as licensed sci-fi novels work. It's about as good as the Halo books, which also suck. These books are generally given a lot of leeway because they expand the universe of beloved media, but stop giving this tripe a pass.
The story is almost nonexistent. It's a collection of """highlights""" of Thrawn's rise to power, and I need to emphasize how sarcastic this is because those highlights are just dumb snippets of sci-fi drivel. Each chapter is prefaced with incredibly cringe-worthy blurbs presumably written by Thrawn, ranging from ""tactics"" to personal growth. It's like Chicken Soup for the Military Sci-Fi Writer's Soul. The novel constantly masturbates to Thrawn's genius intellect and tactical ability, but the author has neither of those. There's effectively no character development so far, and the narrator character feels really out of place, and is clearly just a stand-in for the audience.
Anyways, it's pretty bad. Not sure what SW fans are drooling over. If this is reflective of Timothy Zahn's other work, I didn't miss out on much by skipping them.

Most original games are only good for a few short sessions. Good ones are knock offs of card or board games, old-gen game ports, etc.
I assume you don't consider handheld games to be the same as "mobile games".

Blade Runner. I fell asleep the first three times I watched it.
Can someone tell me why Harrison Ford is so beloved? He was the worst part of Blade Runner
I hope Ryan Gosling kills him in the next movie.
Can replicants die of boredom?

"People pontificate, 'Suicide is selfishness.' Career churchmen like Pater go a step further and call in a cowardly assault on the living. Oafs argue this specious line for varying reason: to evade fingers of blame, to impress one's audience with one's mental fiber, to vent anger, or just because one lacks the necessary suffering to sympathize. Cowardice is nothing to do with it - suicide takes considerable courage. Japanese have the right idea. No, what's selfish is to demand another to endure an intolerable existence, just to spare families, friends, and enemies a bit of soul-searching.”

It pains me to think that I'll never get to drink Guinness in a real Irish pub.

Some of this issue results from the role of video games as an unadulterated power fantasy. Even in GoW, where you have sidekicks that apparently contribute (even though they don't), it's still the PC that does everything, and I think devs are hesitant to introduce more competent allies because it reduces the difficulty of the game. When allies are implemented well (see SW: Republic Commando), it falls under Anita's following complaint that they're basically automatons with no agency as characters. So few devs are able to actually bridge the divide between gameplay and story (i.e., cutscenes). I'm struggling to think of a good example of competent, cooperative AI, actually. But when pretty much all of the examples she mentioned devolve into waist-high-cover arenas between cutscenes, it's hard to see a solution.

Budweiser.
Should've dropped the other four and gotten yourself a decent drink.
what do you drink?
Dark beers. Samuel Smith's my favorite brewery.
Ever drink Guinness?
Yeah bro, it's one of my favorite beers. It's what got me into enjoying beer.

It isn't limited to women for any particular reason, it's a shit story.
She makes a point of this in the video, saying it's not harmful when it's done to men because it doesn't enforce an existing stereotype that men are weak or generally unable to protect themselves. Make of that what you will.

With prior knowledge? Nostromo. They weren't well-prepared, but they took action quickly and had an easy means of escape (the escape pod). The Event Horizon and Ishimura were fucked from the beginning.

But I will say, if they do find a tenent, they may be looking to move in as soon as possible and now you both have a scheduling issue.
My lease is valid through June, so I'm fine until then. They've already listed it as available 7/1, so I assume it won't be an issue. The real concern they should have is finding a tenant. They seem to think it's easy to find tenants themselves. Re: Pets, yeah something like 50% of renters have pets, so you cut yourself off of a lot of possible revenue. I understand why some people prefer not to rent to them; not everyone takes care of their pets as well as you or I do.

vast open world
character progression system less tied to the story
considerably more freedom, featuring a greater emphasis on exploration over previous entries in the series
is “huge” in scope Huger maps and less story are definitely what this series needs to revitalize its fanbase.

No spots for on base housing yet?
I haven't even checked because of the waiting list. Even then, it takes all my BAH and it's still a fucking pain to move everything myself, then PCS a month later, when they could just extend the lease a couple months. Not even joking, the landlord is military and they're cancelling their service with the property management company so his jobless wife can manage the property as a hobby.

« on: May 08, 2017, 08:47:31 PM »
Where do you live?
Virginia. I've skimmed legal options, including military clause info, but there's pretty much nothing. I'm gonna reach out to the landlord and ask them personally, rather than through the property management company.

Planning to move at the end of July or August, and my lease is up in June. I asked to for a month-to-month lease for that period, and they decided to just terminate the lease at that time, so I'm pretty much fucked for those 1-2 months. Going to have to find somewhere with monthly leases that accept pets (read: fucking nowhere).
No questions asked. Just ranting. Don't ever tell your landlord that you're moving ahead of time.

First half of the trailer looks good, second half looks like generic action schlock. Hopefully that's just done up for the trailer for people without the attention span to get through the original Blade Runner.
But really, you can't go wrong with Ridley Scott and Denis Villeneuve. I can't wait to see this. Hopefully it's so true to the original that I fall asleep halfway through watching it for the first few times.

I'm looking to get a large external HDD for use with a laptop or tablet, preferably on the slim side but not strictly mobile, though one powered by the connecting device is preferred. I've heard Seagates are inexpensive but break often, and Western Digital is the route to go. Any recommendations or specific models to avoid?

I thought the whole point of this franchise was that it's a conglomeration of cliches (homages) In some ways, yes, and when it actually does this intentionally, I enjoyed it. It subverted tropes throughout the first half of the film, from the opening scene with a huge fight that is ignored because who cares, they're the heroes and there's nothing at stake, just watch little Groot dance. Multiple times, sappy/cliche exposition would be halted mid-sentence by an irreverent joke, telling the audience that stuff really isn't important. The Sovereign are initially set up as the villains, but time and again are used as jokes, telling the audience, again, that the traditional narrative isn't what's important here: what's important are the characters and their interactions. Continued: Spoiler I don't think anyone over the age of 16 would have fallen for the ploy that Ego was beneficent, and I don't think we were supposed to. But that's the point, about halfway through, where this subversion of tropes begins to end: everything starts embracing the tropes. Gamora/Nebula fight it out and become sisters; Rocket and Yondu argue and both accept they've buried emotional feelings under a facade of masculinity; Peter accepts his new family...okay, but we've seen all of that. Where's the turn? Oh, that's really as deep as we're going...didn't the movie just tell me these tropes are supposed to be a setup for actual character development? It feels like the writers set up a big ball of loose ends that they intended to leave frayed for comedic purposes -- why would we need it to end perfectly? -- but were compelled to do otherwise by Marvel standards.
And wow, that climax. With Peter having even a marginal grasp of being part-Celestial, I was expecting so much more than a glorified fistfight and a bomb killing one of the most powerful beings in the universe. Don't get me wrong, I think Ego was a fantastic villain for the MCU, and there were points in the fight that they tried going back to subversion (Rocket asking for tape and teaming up with Yondu, namely) but compared to recent Marvel works it's below par. Also, remember that I did really like the movie, and I think it's one of the best in the MCU. I tend to concentrate on the negatives during discourse, because nobody really needs to be told what the film did right. The problems weren't systemic, but the third act could have been much better.

I liked this movie a lot, but was pretty disappointed with the generic sequel structure this film took, from expanding the team, redeeming previous villains, and the protagonist searching for his father, with that reveal being a lazy cliche itself. The character development boiled down to everybody just needing a hug. I worry that my enjoyment of the film from it's dozens of jokes and big spectacle is letting me forgive a pretty bad story and a really shitty climax. Spoiler After Doctor Strange's creative climax, watching two Celestials just have a dumb fist fight was a huge letdown.
