The Flood / Re: The most expensive painting in the world
« on: June 01, 2017, 01:01:45 PM »
A lot of abstract art relies on the artist's past & intentions, as well as the culture of the time -- which I know nothing about, so I appreciate it as impressive work but don't attempt to justify any price tag. And ultimately, merit doesn't usually play a huge factor in high-ticket art pieces anyway.

do people key cars often enough to where you start anticipating it

I have to sell it before moving, so I'd rather minimize the possibility of damages. I'm kind of paranoid about car stuff after getting fucked last November when my car got totaled.

If it says something like "parking mode" in the product description it's 24/7. Thing is you'll likely have to hard wire it into the internals and install a BDP device.

I'd get a cheap security camera and have it overlook your car. Is your vehicle in a driveway or do you have to keep it in a parking lot?

I have a driveway, but I'm not sure how to go about wiring it. I only have one outlet in the back of the house.

The Flood / Rethinking Fantastic Beasts etc. and male protagonists
« on: May 31, 2017, 11:27:41 AM »
YouTube

I definitely relegated Newt to being a poor protagonist, as both boring and off-putting because of the slightly autistic way Eddie Redmayne portrayed him. I feel like that quality prevented me from seeing him as a well-written male protagonist, and I wish I'd been more open-minded about him. Watch the video, and discuss whether you think you gave this character a fair shake, or if your initial judgment still holds. Personally, until watching this I hadn't seen much of an issue surrounding typical male leads being strong, smart, and witty, except that it's so common of a trope.

learn this phrase:

Onegai shimasu (said like oni-gashi-mas)

it's basically a polite way of saying please.

One thing I do know is that pronouncing the 'u' at the end will make me sound like an idiot.

Be sure to bring along a large amount of weebshit-repellent; we don't want you getting infected.

Good luck! How often will you be returning to the States to visit family, if at all?

Hopefully once a year, may be less. Won't get a whole lot of time off unfortunately.

Re: Saudis vs Iran

Saudi Arabia is such a valuable ally because of their government's willingness to tow the line. They don't use their military to enforce their ideology in the region, they don't attempt to start a nuclear program, and they control nearly half of the market's oil supply. Yeah their government is a reprehensible Wahabi monarchy, but at least they keep their aggression under the table, which is better than openly attacking coalition forces or putting a military stranglehold on resources. Iran's government is unwilling to any of those things.
That's funny because it was Saudi Arabia involved in 9/11 and it's Saudi Arabia funding and arming terrorists.

What is your point? Should the U.S. consider them an enemy and turn them into another Iran? That would be utterly devastating to peace in the region and global market stability. We have much more leverage over Saudi Arabia as a military ally and trade partner than as an enemy.

"Recorded in game engine" or w/e

As if showing prerendered shit in the engine's video player is equal to gameplay footage. Fuck Ubisoft. I won't put money towards them even if it's a 10/10 GOTY.

I wouldn't fault people for posting their immediate reactions to this. I don't expect some guy on a forum to suddenly come up with a cogent solution to radical Islam.

One should keep in mind that the full story of the Xenomorph still isn't explained and likely wont be.

Unfortunately, Ridley Scott wants A:C to be the first of a trilogy leading directly to Alien. And the mural in Prometheus is very likely just one of the early incarnations of the Xenomorphs that we saw in that film.

Aliens expanded the canon, too, and nobody had an issue with it. I don't think it would have been as big of an issue in Prometheus and Covenant if it wasn't so expository. The middle act of Covenant was just straight-up exposition about how David made the xenos. Aliens barely talked about it at all, and just built up to the queen's reveal using with tension.

Gaming / Re: It's a fucking glorified expansion pack
« on: May 22, 2017, 01:48:38 PM »
The Cabal are bad. Their sole mission is to expand and conquer. They've been fleeing "something" though. The Eliksni(Fallen) are just scavengers now. They had the Traveler a long time ago but then he Darkness destroyed their world. And of course the Hive are bad. Their slaves to the Darkness and have been wiping out entire species for billions of years.

The Cabal didn't do a single bad thing in the game though. They occupied Mars -- after it was deserted by humans -- and all we did as players was hang out and murder them in their homes. Then they attacked the Taken dreadnought to stop the Hive, and we killed them too. Grimoire cards don't count for anything; in the game, there's zero reason for killing them. The guardians are the antagonists against a species hellbent on stopping the Hive and Vex.

OT I don't think my morals or worldview has changed, but I think it's normal to adjust political views for different administrations. I'm not sure I could codify them as effectively as you did.

The show was 90% cheese anyway. I'm glad they didn't just take an easy out, since that's what the episode felt like until the last couple minutes.
