The Flood / Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Spoiler
I do like that this film wasn't just a fan-servicey fulfillment of the biggest theories. It didn't open with Luke taking the place of Rey's Yoda, telling her about her legendary parents, turning her into another jedi. Snoke wasn't an important villain any more than Hux is. Finn and Rose didn't succeed in their adventure and save the day. Poe also didn't save the day just by virtue of being a heroic lead character. It definitely fulfilled the role of a 2nd film in a trilogy.

It defied expectations in a lot of really exciting ways, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with it... I'm not excited about the Han Solo film though.

So does this actually change the established lore on how hypersapce works in Star Wars? I always thought they travelled to another dimension or something, but now it's just moving REALLY fast?

Hyperspace has always been effectively moving really fast through real space, just hand-waved with "mass shadows" and other bullshit.

Just saw TLJ,  thought it was pretty good.

Spoiler
I got really excited when Finn was about to die, because his character blows.
I think most of the problems come from the director just trashing JJ's stories; every revelation felt jarring and contrived. The fact the Resistance is literally a handful of ships with nothing else is stupid. I don't really have anything unique to say at this point...though it's good to see that the dark side ending of Jedi Academy is now canon.

Also, ships can just track other ships through hyperspace, which is all sorts of dumb

And "battering ram cannon", "miniature death star tech"... come on.

I'll be in Tokyo for a week so I'll miss seeing it until then. I'm considering just looking up spoilers because it'll probably be impossible to avoid.

Anyone that's seen it, feel free to chime in whether you think it's worth holding out or just reading the spoilers. I'm generally fine with knowing the plot before a first viewing.

Jerusalem has been recognized as Israel's capitol by the U.S. since 1995. Neither Bush nor Obama chose to move the embassy there for security and political reasons; however, they both recognized it.

nonexistent story is just how i like my zelda anyway

the problem is how they advertised it—none of us knew that all those cutscenes we saw in the trailers were relegated exclusively to just loosely connected memories of stuff that happened 100 years ago, and i can see why some people would be bothered by that

It's partially that, but I also don't mind when the series uses the story as a justification for the gameplay, but previous titles have done just that while still advancing the "legend" of Zelda in a meaningful way. BotW presented itself, in advertising and in - game, as a landmark in the series' story with cutscenes and voice acting, when it was probably the most vanilla story the series has had since Ocarina.

That said it was easily the best my favorite Nintendo game in a long time, and I'm glad Odyssey followed so closely in quality.

I didn't play many games this year, and while I think BotW was one of the best I played, I find it hard, or disappointing to believe it was the best of 2017. It had a fun sandbox, but the story was almost non-existent and had some significant issues holding back the gameplay. I thought Nier: Automata in particular succeeded in making a uniquely powerful story with solid gameplay mechanics, and for that reason it should've won.

Serious / Re: Net Neutrality Dead?
« on: December 04, 2017, 07:03:07 AM »
One, Japan has long had a much more competitive ISP market than the US, although it's recently been dwindling and formal net neutrality rules are being proposed.
Most people just go with one of a few mobile carriers for their internet access, even at home. It's a lot like the non-competitive market in the states. I'm not convinced that ending or changing the current laws will plunge the U.S. into a dark age of internet (nor did it prior to 2015). I do support net neutrality.

I also think that the public attitude is probably overstated. When I brought up the issue with my girlfriend's family two weeks ago in the US, none of them had heard about it before. When I explained what might happen, they didn't think that the tiered / laned internet sounded that bad and would shrug at it becoming like a cable box service. The online minority just shouts very loudly while I'm willing to bet a very large chunk of the population doesn't care and wouldn't be too bothered by these practices.
We're kind of talking about two different ramifications, although some might claim they go hand in hand. One is that the internet is divided into tiered service bundles allowing you to add or remove certain high-bandwidth services like streaming video or gaming, and the other is the the potential for competitors to impose restrictions on each other, influence political content, etc. The latter is what really concerns me, whereas the former just seems like an extension of the current subscription plans various services already impose. I think most people like your girlfriend's family see the removal of NN as the chance that Cox might let them pay less since they don't play internet games or stream Netflix, when in could mean much more.

I live in a country without codified net neutrality laws and the internet is the same as in the states. I'm interested to see what restrictions ISPs would place on VPNs though. With broadband access becoming increasingly less expensive for ISPs to provide, even at high speeds and bandwidth usage, there doesn't seem to be much of a reason to implement these hypothetical plans except as an attempt to eek out a bit more profit from customers, but at a huge risk given the public attitude towards exclusive plans.

Saw Grave of the Fireflies recently and I have to agree with how great it is. I think you'll enjoy The Wind Rises because of the similar setting and tone. My wife also recommends Barefoot Gen, a similar story, if you want to be even more depressed than when you watched Grave of the Fireflies.

I'd like to play it but I'm not going to support the practice of cutting sections from the game to sell as DLC or pre-order "bonuses". Shit won't change until customers stop buying them.

There's no reason to treat those two concepts as mutually exclusive. Their actions can be viewed as morally repugnant from a modern viewpoint while also recognizing the impacts they had on the world.

A conflict with NK would hardly be the start of WWIII.

They're all pretty bad because Disney only makes them to retain the rights to the properties.
How so? Not that big of an expert of US IP law, but copyright doesn't typically require any use to retain the property and you don't need a massive movie to keep a trademark from expiring or becoming generic.

Can't recall the details, but it's something to do with retaining film rights to their stories, because they're based on fairytales rather than being original properties. I believe this is along the same lines of what Sony was doing with Spider-Man.

Saw 2049 and enjoyed it a lot. Definitely deserves a second viewing.

Agreed, but I have one misgiving;
Spoiler
What happened to the dog?

Doggo didn't need Deckard; Deckard needed Doggo

Really my only gripe with the film is
Spoiler
that the entire revolution plot came out of nowhere and didn't really add anything to the story except a way to tell K that he isn't Rachel's son. Apparently they all believed they could be the child, but none of them thought to look for whomever created and implanted that memory, which would have immediately led them to her like it did for K. Overall, that was just a really hamfisted way to tell the audience that everything isn't completely fucked for the replicants, which really hadn't been addressed at all.

On one hand you say the movie only examined the themes of sentience and artificiality at surface-level, but on the other seem to have missed the point of Deckard stopping Rachel from leaving, an interaction which is critical to that theme possibly more than any other in the film. Rachel is struggling with attraction towards Deckard, fear of being retired, and conflict about being a replicant -- none of which she should be feeling if she's just a robot as Deckard asserts. Deckard is very much an anti-hero, bordering on the story's villain, and ultimately the scene co-opts a by-the-numbers film-noir trope to examine those themes in an original way.

I'm not going to pretend the movie is one of my favorites, and it took me a few viewings to appreciate it, but I think you missed the mark on this one.

Edit: for context, the scene from the original script was a more generic version in which Deckard coaches Rachel to kiss and presumably, after the scene transitions, have sex. The final product was a lot more complex.

Yeah, that Death Note ending is a huge disappointment. Maybe it went down differently in the source material, but as soon as those kids come in I can't watch another minute.

I'm surprised by your reaction to FMA:B. It's probably the most similar to American cartoons as your list gets; on its face it almost resembles an American animation with nods to shonen tropes, like in Teen Titans. Its dub is excellent, the animation is great and the story is legitimately original and well-realized. As for the first series, the quality of everything is almost the same, but the story takes a bit of a nosedive when it succeeds the source material. Treat it like filler episodes.
