Swatting absolutely should be strictly prosecuted, but holy fuck can the police please not shoot some random dude whose only crime was opening his front door?

The Flood / Re: Verb gives his shitty opinions on anime (redux) #FuckAnime« on: December 26, 2017, 05:48:44 PM »
I disagree with that generalization, but it's probably because anime and Japanese culture aren't westernized and relateable, so jumping in on a what is effectively an arthouse character piece wrought with eastern cultural implications and criticism tends to be off-putting and yields ignorant interpretations. Kind of like the first time a suburban white guy listens to underground hip hop or gangster rap and thinks it's garbage; introduction to the culture via shonen or more western anime may help a viewer understand the meaning of other aspects of Japanese media. 157

Adam Driver really is my favorite part of the film. Dude's got range. I'm hoping he continues to be more than a just a villain.

The Flood / Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi« on: December 25, 2017, 10:51:00 PM »i'd say hyperspace being an instant jail-free card is probably the bigger contrivance, and technological advancements in a franchise taking place in a technologically advanced fantasy setting shouldn't feel all that contrived I.M.O. The advancement isn't the issue...one of the best things the prequels do that the OT failed at was showing how the galaxy developed around the stories and characters throughout the series via changing technology. It's sloppily introduced by Finn, who was apparently a janitor of all things and some random engineer in the resistance, like it's a well-known technology, but nobody else on the ship even had an idea it was possible. That's a contrivance. Tbh any time two characters just start babbling about an explanation for a sci fi plot device, I just roll my eyes at the lazy writing. 161
The Flood / Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi« on: December 25, 2017, 10:40:23 PM »contrived, maybe (welcome to star wars)It was a contrived, unprecedented plot device that undermines the continuity of the series. It's an obvious retcon; a throwaway line isn't a precedent for anything. But I do rescind my complaint, knowing that the explanation in the movie was bullshit. And hopefully it's never used again. 162
The Flood / Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi« on: December 25, 2017, 10:27:27 PM »
It was a contrived, unprecedented plot device that undermines the continuity of the series. That said, apparently it wasn't some magic tracking device, but was a massive supercomputer calculating possible destinations the same way it was done in the OT multiple times, but a lot faster. So basically all the technobabble Finn and Rose spat out to justify its existence was just nonsense. 163

The Flood / Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi« on: December 24, 2017, 04:51:12 AM »I just wanted the same Luke that I saw in the OT. A Luke that developed more, not regressed and threw away everything he learned. He's 30 years older, and had failed as a jedi, leading to disaster; it's almost exactly the same character arc as Obi Wan. Why would you want to see a flawless character with nothing to overcome? That's all he ever was in the EU, and it's good TLJ changed that. 167
Serious / Re: Is Water Wet?« on: December 22, 2017, 06:53:46 PM »like, i heard someone try to tell me "it's like saying fire can burn itself," and i didn't quite know how to respond to that, even though it viscerally seems like a stupid comparison That one's even worse than this, because a 'burn' can be considered two very distinct things: the physical injury that occurs when an organism touches a flame, and the chemical process between a material and oxygen at high heat. So if someone asked, "does fire burn (injure) itself", you'd probably just ignore them for asking a dumb question. But if they asked if a flame -- the visible light and heat emitted from the chemical reaction of fire -- can burn itself, then the answer is no, because the heat from the flame is not sparking a reaction in other parts of the flame. But on the other hand, maybe you would now say it sort of is "burning/injuring" itself, because the flame perpetuates itself just by being hot, allowing the reaction to spread to other material. I still have no problem saying that the question is fundamentally dumb, and not really analogous to "is water wet?". 168

Serious / Is Water Wet?« on: December 22, 2017, 06:26:34 AM »
Yeah this has been done to death but Serious needs some activity.
IMO, 'wetness' is the state of being soaked/covered/in contact with water. Water sticks to people and objects because of its high cohesive property, and it also sticks to itself for the same reason, resulting in having the highest surface tension of any non-metallic chemical. So unless we're talking about a single molecule of H2O, then water is wet, because it is in physical contact with water. A single molecule of water would not be wet, because it is not in contact with other water. But somewhat on the contrary, the way surface tension works is that because the molecules on the surface of the water are exposed to air and not more water, they adhere to their adjacent molecules stronger, meaning that the molecules on the surface are quantifiably more wet than the water surrounded on all sides by other water molecules. If that's confusing, imagine you're at the bottom of a pool versus covered head to toe in something like glue. You'd probably say you're more "wet" with glue because of how sticky it is, than if you were deep underwater -- i.e., the 'wetness' is due to the strength of the cohesion and thus the perceived affect of the liquid, not the amount/mass of liquid around you. 171

The Flood / Help me name this pooch« on: December 22, 2017, 02:03:36 AM »![]() We're gonna be getting this guy from a shelter here in Japan next week. He was rescued around 8 months old, living on a mountain somewhere. He's pretty unsocialized, and was literally shaking with fear when we came to see him, so there's a lot of work to be done when we get him home, but this will be our second abandoned dog so we're relatively prepared. The name they gave him is Miyagi, but that doesn't feel very creative. Give it your best shot. His breed is unknown, so feel free to chime in on that, too. 175

The Flood / Re: Star Wars: The Last Jedi« on: December 21, 2017, 02:59:15 AM »It sounds like people wanted Luke to be a plot device and not an actual character I think SW fans wanted EU Luke, some jedi grandmaster that had a hot jedi wife and a bunch of cool jedi buddies and was now a wise old dude like Obi Wan. I haven't read more than a few of the EU books, but in every single one of them Luke's character is flat and boring as fuck. Would people have been happier if they'd done some corny montage of Luke training Rey like in ESB? Maybe, but the story would've been worse for having it. IMO, Luke's character (barring a few gags that didn't work) was one of the highlights of the film. 179
