The Flood / Going to New Zealand« on: January 01, 2019, 07:07:48 AM »
Anyone been/live there? I'm flying into Auckland and will be exploring both main islands. If you live there, let's grab a beer. If you've been there, feel free to throw out recommendations for bars or places to see. <3

The Flood / Later alligators« on: May 25, 2018, 03:44:22 AM »
I'm leaving again this weekend and wanted to get any last minute recommendations for media before going. I'll buy books or movies, but I'd probably end up torrenting shows so avoid recommending those if you're opposed to piracy.
Back around December, bye. 4

The Flood / Annihilation« on: March 12, 2018, 11:02:23 PM »
Great film, and entirely female-led. A touch of body horror, but don't let that turn you off if you're not into that. It's one of the more genuinely unique sci-fi premises to come out in a long time, and I look forward to reading the original novel. Some of the acting was less than stellar, but the movie does a great job of presenting believable characters in an unthinkable situation. I think numerical ratings are reductionist, so I'll just say if you're at all a fan of sci-fi thrillers or horror like Alien, Event Horizon, Dead Space, or even Under the Skin, definitely check it out. Don't watch trailers.

Serious / Should police be allowed to kill you if you don't follow directions?« on: December 31, 2017, 04:35:00 PM »
Piggybacking off the swatting thread, reports have claimed the innocent man was shot because he raised his hands, then dropped them. Maybe some legal experts need to chime in here, but where are the laws saying I need to do what police say, even on my own property, and if I don't I can be justifiably shot?
I completely understand police are charged with giving lawful orders and they have to be obeyed; I'm talking about their ability to shoot or kill you for not doing so. 8
Serious / Is Water Wet?« on: December 22, 2017, 06:26:34 AM »
Yeah this has been done to death but Serious needs some activity.
IMO, 'wetness' is the state of being soaked/covered/in contact with water. Water sticks to people and objects because of its high cohesive property, and it also sticks to itself for the same reason, resulting in having the highest surface tension of any non-metallic chemical. So unless we're talking about a single molecule of H2O, then water is wet, because it is in physical contact with water. A single molecule of water would not be wet, because it is not in contact with other water. But somewhat on the contrary, the way surface tension works is that because the molecules on the surface of the water are exposed to air and not more water, they adhere to their adjacent molecules stronger, meaning that the molecules on the surface are quantifiably more wet than the water surrounded on all sides by other water molecules. If that's confusing, imagine you're at the bottom of a pool versus covered head to toe in something like glue. You'd probably say you're more "wet" with glue because of how sticky it is, than if you were deep underwater -- i.e., the 'wetness' is due to the strength of the cohesion and thus the perceived affect of the liquid, not the amount/mass of liquid around you. 9
The Flood / Help me name this pooch« on: December 22, 2017, 02:03:36 AM »We're gonna be getting this guy from a shelter here in Japan next week. He was rescued around 8 months old, living on a mountain somewhere. He's pretty unsocialized, and was literally shaking with fear when we came to see him, so there's a lot of work to be done when we get him home, but this will be our second abandoned dog so we're relatively prepared. The name they gave him is Miyagi, but that doesn't feel very creative. Give it your best shot. His breed is unknown, so feel free to chime in on that, too. 11

The Flood / How do I sell my fucking car?« on: September 08, 2017, 06:49:57 PM »
I'm selling my cars before I go to Japan and nobody has responded except for typical spam calls. What the fuck? It's a great car (2014 Mazda 3), reasonably priced, etc. I got an appraisal at Carmax which was $1,500 the lowest price I'd take, so I'm really only interested in private sales.
Anyone sold a car before? What the fuck am I doing wrong? 13
The Flood / Hey so that snape thing was pretty weird right?« on: August 24, 2017, 11:50:56 PM »
Watching the last HP movie in the background and they just got to the part where they reveal that Snape was in love with Lily for the past 20 years, which drove him to turn against Voldy etc.
But that's kind of awkward and ham-fisted, right? Like, there wasn't really much in the way of building their relationship except some implied jealousy between Snape and James. It took a 3 minute long exposition dump to make it work, when they could've just revealed that he's actually been a good guy the entire time, just not one that disliked Harry because he didn't get to fuck his mom. 14
The Flood / Lifters of Sep7agon« on: August 19, 2017, 01:41:10 PM »
Been stuck on a deadlift plateau for about a month. Barely hit 475 on my last max day, after a 455 max. Currently doing a linear program, and I've been struggling to finish my working sets each week, typically only being able to get half of them. The bar just won't even leave the ground, even though I know I can do the weight. Neither bench nor squats are giving me the same problem.
Deloads haven't made a difference. I just feel fucking exhausted after my first two sets. Thoughts? 15
The Flood / I am not just a boy who posts on Sep7agon« on: August 05, 2017, 02:01:24 PM »
My posts are not bought. I am not just a boy who posts memes. I have an intricate history. Experiences and feelings. I'm complex. I study and read. I bet I've read everything you've read. Don't think I haven't. I consume libraries. I wear out spines and ROM-drives. I do things like get in a taxi and say, "The library, and step on it." My instincts concerning syntax and mechanics are better than your own, I can tell, with due respect.
But it transcends the mechanics. I'm not a machine. I feel and believe. I have opinions. Some of them are interesting. I could, if you'd let me, talk and talk. Let's talk about anything. I believe the influence of Kierkegaard on Camus is underestimated. I believe Dennis Gabor may very well have been the Antichrist. I believe Hobbes is just Rousseau in a dark mirror. I believe, with Hegel, that transcendence is absorption. I could interface you guys right under the table. I'm not just a creãtus, manufactured, conditioned, bred for a function. Please don't think I don't care. 16
Serious / D. Trump's reinstating the ban on transpeople in the military« on: July 26, 2017, 09:19:53 AM »
http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/07/26/539470211/trump-says-transgender-people-cant-serve-in-military
Quote "After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow ... Transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. Military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming ... victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you" All applications by transpeople to serve in the military will be deferred until 2018 while the military "reviews" the costs. This is a remarkably shameful thing he's done here, and while I do understand the stance of not wanting to not only cover the cost of transitioning but also paying the salary and training for a person that effectively can't deploy and is in a downed medical status for months at a time, it's the sudden reversal after significant efforts have been made to welcome trans servicemembers that is embarrassing here. I'm sure Charlie and Das can attest to the same, but as someone currently serving I can guarantee you the military is barely accepting of gays, and the openness towards transpeople was an important step towards normalizing the entire LGBT community. 17
Any clue what's going on here? I find it hard to believe I've been using the service for free for almost a year; I never bothered to check the monthly fee because I thought it was like $5 a month. nvm, it's through Amazon and my wife runs that email, so I've never seen it. Feel free to lock/delete/w/e 18

Serious / US Navy shoots down Syrian bomber« on: June 18, 2017, 05:49:39 PM »

Quote Coalition aircraft conducted a “show of force” mission to stop Syrian forces from advancing and coalition officials contacted the Russians on the “de-confliction line’ to calm the situation down, but nearly two hours later a Syrian SU-22 dropped bombs on SDF fighters, according to Sunday’s news release. *cue Kenny Loggins music* In other news, the USS Fitzgerald was struck by a cargo vessel in Japan and 7 sailors are presumed dead after two birthing compartments were breached. 21
Gaming / Dark Souls build recommendations« on: June 17, 2017, 11:34:49 AM »
I'm testing out my new laptop's performance while running DkS and I wanted to try a build I haven't done before; I've already done pyro and quality builds. I've never touched sorceries or faith, but I was thinking of a challenge build too. I'm not particularly good at the game, so I don't think I could handle a deprived SL1 build or anything like that. I'm leaning towards a naked/no shield run, since I feel like I use it as a crutch. Any suggestions?

The Flood / have you never wondered why I drink only distilled water, & only grain alcohol?« on: June 10, 2017, 09:29:08 PM »
Have you ever seen a Commie drink a glass of water? Vodka, that's what they drink, isn't it? Never water? On no account will a Commie ever drink water, and not without good reason. Water, that's what I'm getting at, water. Mandrake, water is the source of all life. Seven-tenths of this Earth's surface is water. Why, do you realize that 70 percent of you is water? And as human beings, you and I need fresh, pure water to replenish our precious bodily fluids.
Are you beginning to understand? Mandrake, have you never wondered why I drink only distilled water, or rainwater, and only pure-grain alcohol? Have you ever heard of a thing called fluoridation. Fluoridation of water? Do you realize that fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous Communist plot we have ever had to face? 26

The Flood / Rethinking Fantastic Beasts etc. and male protagonists« on: May 31, 2017, 11:27:41 AM »YouTube I definitely relegated Newt to being a poor protagonist, as both boring and off-putting because of the slightly autistic way Eddie Redmayne portrayed him. I feel like that quality prevented me from seeing him as a well-written male protagonist, and I wish I'd been more open-minded about him. Watch the video, and discuss whether you think you gave this character a fair shake, or if your initial judgment still holds. Personally, until watching this I hadn't seen much of an issue surrounding typical male leads being strong, smart, and witty, except that it's so common of a trope. 29

Serious / re: assumption of guilt for sexual assault, rape, and abuse« on: May 18, 2017, 05:50:11 PM »
Many on the grassroots Left have shifted towards a position of always -- barring extreme absurdity -- siding with an accuser making claims of sexual assault, particularly when that accuser is a woman (or a POC), and even more so when the accused assailant is a celebrity. A recent example, and why I bring this up now, involves a member of PWR BTTM, and previously another similar complaint against a member of Swans.
The point of this inherent trust in the supposed victim is to help counter the positions of power that celebrities, white people, and men have over others. The validity of that power is not the point of this thread. What I'd ask is if you think it's a good thing to trust and be responsive to victims' claims, and whether you see that as contrary to the principle of innocence until guilt is proven, or if it's possible to not only support a supposed victim and the accused person. Is the act of vocally trusting the victim's claim potentially defamatory for the accused, and does that even matter? |
