Serious / Re: What do you think of the social justice movement?« on: September 17, 2014, 03:24:37 PM »
It is essential to the survival of our modern society to have laws as well as a clearly defined set of human rights.
It is our duty, as a society, to uphold these human rights above all. They are more important than the law, the economy, or anything else. I believe if people are not receiving equal treatment under the law, then changes must be made to fix that. So I suppose I align with the principles these groups claim to believe in. The problem is, the modern movement is a mess. Sure, there are decent people out there, but any movement will be defined by it's loudest voices. In the case of social justice, those voices belong to the SJWs. The movement is being quickly radicalized by people like, for example, Jay. People who claim to believe in equality, but are ultimately just bigots who want special treatment. Quite a few concepts are propping up that, frankly, disgust me. Namely, shit like "Cultural Appropriation" and the delusions of some kind of patriarchal conspiracy to keep women and minorities down. Another problem is that these people, in general, are pretty openly against free speech. They may claim to be fighting against systematic oppression, but they are always the first to silence dissenting voices when they get the opportunity. This is appearing in real laws already. In the UK, free speech is NOT protected, young men have been arrested for internet trolling. This is not acceptable. There is no such thing as hate speech, only unpopular speech. All forms of expression must be protected under law, or freedom of speech does not truly exist. If you believe there should be laws regulating ANY speech, any speech at all, you are supporting authoritarianism. A good example is our very own Dustin, who fancies himself a moderate, rational progressive, defender of human rights. Dustin will be very happy to uphold your right to view pornographic material that doesn't harm others, right up until that porn offends him. Then there's the Marxist flavor the whole movement has begun to smell of lately, but that's a rant for another day. 1301
