The Flood / Text/online messages and intuition
« on: November 02, 2015, 02:34:14 PM »
Can anyone else sort of sense how someone is feeling behind a text, or even a post on here? Like, sensing the person's energy behind the message.

Of course we're all familiar with intuition. Yet does anyone else think it's intriguing how that intuition spills into the online realm?

The Flood / beauty
« on: October 13, 2015, 01:24:44 AM »
"For me, beauty is always retreating from one’s grasp: the only thing I consider important is what existed once, or ought to have existed."-Yukio Mishima

What do you think? What could be considered more valuable, how beautiful something (anything at all) once was, or how the ideal design/beauty of whatever that something is, should've been? Or, is it more important what that something eventually becomes?

I'll just say this. Throughout the course of a thing's existence, each stage of it's duration is like a snapshot. Looking at in retrospect, could it not be said that when that thing was at it's most beautiful state (beauty here can signify many things), that this snapshot of it's maximum beauty is equal in value at least to other snapshots of it's existence (say, a snapshot of when it began to deteriorate)? What's to say that how that thing ended it's existence is to define the overall memory of that thing?

In the end, maybe it boils down to how you want to remember that thing's existence.

Games like Suikoden or Radiata Stories, where you have a vast array of playable characters (108 and 176, respectively)

Spoiler

These two are hidden gems, which is both fortunate and unfortunate. This element of so many playable characters is something that could be implemented into any type of gameplay or story. Not only does it keep things from getting stale, but I think it could eventually be advanced to the point where different combinations of characters, utilized throughout a storyline, (think support status from Fire Emblem) could influence the course of the plot. With literally dozens of possible romances, friendships or antagonistic relationships thrown into a type of malleable plot, I think it could be something that'd give a player a better reason to go through multiple playthroughs aside from the classic secret scene reward.

What your thoughts? Does this notion seem too far fetched >_>

The Flood / The adventures that never happened
« on: July 31, 2015, 02:51:58 AM »
You sit there wondering about the adventures that never happened as you eat your honey nut cheerios, you watch the news, you read that article but you're some place far away, a man dressed in a toad suit knocks your laptop over, you can tell he's a man because there's a bulge in between his legs and before you know it he's already got you in a headlock and then you wake up drowning inside a boiling cauldron, he impales you with a bamboo chopstick and you struggle to fit your legs inside the man's stomach but you're thinking the whole time about what he said before he swallowed you "Find my daughter" you kick through the walls of the stomach and then you find yourself inside a larger stomach and then you've already found the daughter she looks like Kim Kardashian but with a kind smile on her face and you feel you can trust her when she tells you follow her and along the way you fight Ray Jay clones but after everything you've been through you just drop kick him everytime because it wasn't even a good porno and along the way you grow a bean farm and raise 5 grandchildren with Kim your wife except she's still smiling kindly and then one day you're watching CSI Miami and she slits your throat with a bamboo chopstick and then you sit there wondering about the adventures that never happened.

Gaming / New Fire Emblem Has Same Sex Marriage

“We believe that our gameplay experiences should reflect the diversity of the communities in which we operate and, at the same time, we will always design the game specifications of each title by considering a variety of factors, such as the game’s scenario and the nature of the game play.”

If you want to play it (literally) straight, male-female married couples will still make babies, same as they did in Awakening. But if your male MC hooks up with a male partner (or female MC hooks up with a female partner), they’ll unlock special combat ratings.

Dear Verbatim,

These past 3 months or so that I've known you have been an excruciating ordeal. My heart has been ravaged by the winds of sorrow, rage and passion as I'd sit awake all night long on my roof, peering at the constellations, wondering if the cosmos will ever bring me to you in this lifetime. The weight of ten thousand precious moments, waiting for you, is rupturing the very fabric of my being.

My little heart can't take it anymore. Please say something

Love,

The Flood / This is not the end
« on: June 21, 2015, 02:55:31 AM »
The pre dawn expanse is grey, yet something is glowing beyond it

A light? The rain pours down anyway

You never imagined you'd have these thoughts

Your friends knew the answer but they didn't tell you and now they're gone

And now you have the answer but you forgot the question, the rain barrages the ground outside now

The night is erased, and it takes away some of your memories with it too

You're not sure if you're happy with this or not

The rains stops. Dawn is here. You don't know if it's a gift or an extension of a prison sentence.

It's as complicated or simple as you want it to be.

Serious / Google's 'Inceptionism' AI
« on: June 19, 2015, 02:52:47 PM »
Quote
Google has revealed what its most advanced artificial systems dream of

The firm has revealed a stunning set of images to help explain how its systems learn over time.

It shows how the system learns and what happens when it gets things wrong.

'Artificial Neural Networks have spurred remarkable recent progress in image classification and speech recognition,' wrote Alexander Mordvintsev, , Christopher Olah and Mike Tyka of Google's AI team.
'But even though these are very useful tools based on well-known mathematical methods, we actually understand surprisingly little of why certain models work and others don't.'
Google trains an artificial neural network by showing it millions of training examples and gradually adjusting the network parameters until it gives the classifications the team want.
The team has even given the images a name - Inceptionism.
The network typically consists of 10-30 stacked layers of artificial neurons.
Each image is fed into the input layer, which then talks to the next layer, until eventually the 'output' layer is reached.
The network's 'answer' comes from this final output layer.
In doing this, the software builds up a idea of what it thinks an object looked like.

If a cloud looks a little bit like a bird, the network will make it look more like a bird.
This in turn will make the network recognize the bird even more strongly on the next pass and so forth, until a highly detailed bird appears, seemingly out of nowhere.
'The results are intriguing—even a relatively simple neural network can be used to over-interpret an image, just like as children we enjoyed watching clouds and interpreting the random shapes.
'This network was trained mostly on images of animals, so naturally it tends to interpret shapes as animals.
'But because the data is stored at such a high abstraction, the results are an interesting remix of these learned features.'

Here's an example of what the program managed to alter the image into

So I guess my point is, what are your thoughts on AI and it's rapid, incessant advancement? Is singularity, if even possible, something that we'll see within our lifetimes? If singularity does indeed occur, will it necessarily pose as a threat to humans?

The Flood / Things you can't quite grasp
« on: June 12, 2015, 10:58:14 PM »
Have you ever peered into the sunset, trying to grasp something intangible and precious, an essence you can't really describe, a feeling that in everything that you do, are searching for?? Yet before you can make sense of it, the sun leaves your sky and takes that feeling with it, so that it'll forever remain a secret beyond the veil of the evening.

What inspires you the most?? Wisdom, knowledge, joy, valor, love, or something else??

The Flood / Vacationing in Orleans
« on: June 12, 2015, 05:48:08 PM »
I had reserved a two week stay in Orleans, France.

The hotel I was residing in was a shoddy yet ornate relic from the 19th century. The interior had been advertised as being renovated, but as I tapped my foot on the shriveled carpet of the lobby, I found myself avoiding the gaze of cracked portraits hanging upon stained walls.

A friendly young woman escorted me to my room. Her smiles reassured me, but it worried me that she had also been the receptionist. When I asked her why there weren't more employees tonight, she said they'd be back soon. I could've sworn I heard her whimper after she said that.

Laying back on that stiff mattress, I started to plan my itinerary for tomorrow. After a little while I turned on the tv, just to drown out the incessant humming of the archaic lantern light.

The channel depicted a very old, hunched person riding a bike down a cobblestone road. I couldn't tell if the person was male or female because the dusk light of the setting did not really provide too much in the way of visibility. What I could see is that the old person was doning a dark green hooded cloak, and that the street was empty.

The camera angle suddenly switched from a third person view to a first person view of the individual riding the bicycle. I watched the cobblestone road becomea blur as the rider began to pick up the pace.

Eventually the bike stopped in front of a familar looking hotel. The camera view rocked back and forth as a gnarled hand opened the lobby door. The view passed by the young receptionist, who was whimpering and shaking.

"Please grandmother, don't hurt him," she stammered in French. Yet the  camera view looked up towards the staircase. I winced from the creaks of the old floor boards that could be heard from both the tv and from somewhere outside my room

At this point I was a bit flustered and decided to change the channel. I was hoping for rerun of Seinfeld, but all I got was the same show. The camera stopped just inches from my door.

Silence.

The door, in all of it's entirety, rocketed through the room and slammed into the tv set and knocked it on its side.

The hooded person came towards me swiftly without moving her legs.

"Hey," I said.

She whipped out a batch of steaming oatmeal cookies.

"No I don't like that."

She whipped out a delicious looking enchilada.

"No I don't like that."

She whipped out some bagels and cream cheese.

"No I don't like that."

She whipped out some chocolate fondoo and breadsticks.

"No I don't like that."

She whipped out some ice cream cake.

"No I don't like that."

She whipped out some smoked salmon.

"No I don't like that."

She whipped out some angel hair with lemon garlic sauce and some pieces of chicken. The chicken was tender and I would know because she let me poke it.

"No I don't like that."

She whipped out some beef lo mein with a fortune cookie.

"No I don't like that."

She whipped out some turkey breast cold cuts, thinly sliced.

"No I don't like that."

She whipped out some sautéed pork dumplings.

"No I don't like that."

The old lady sucker punched me in the face.

"Ow," I said. And then I noticed tear droplets splash onto her cloak. I realized then that I had been a poor guest.

I stood up and gave her the biggest, tightest hug I could muster. Then I treated her and her grandchild to dinner at Applebees. We had a time full of laughter and great atmosphere. Just like in the commercials.

The end

It's simply, beautiful. It's beautiful in a simple way.

I don't think they can honestly screw up the game at this point.

It's going to be the next FF7/FFX, mark my words people. It'll be one of the few games that live up to the hype.

If you gave your heart and soul

A year's worth of your sincere time and effort

To someone that doesn't care?

After mental illness took away your ability to focus on your schoolwork for nearly 3 years

You think she might the reason for you to live

So you devote yourself to her

Yet one day she throws you away

She doesn't even tell you why

Couple days ago user here texted you saying he was going to kill himself

You're words weren't enough to save him apparently

At this point I ask you

Honestly

What would you do, huh?

What would you do??
