I read somewhere recently that the top 1% controls over half of the world's resources.
You only need to make $34,000/yr. to be in the top global 1%.

8.5/10 speech
6/10

Better luck next time.

Like I said (and what most people said prior) - this wasn't a SOTU speech to push agenda through Congress. Obama knows he isn't getting any ideas past Republicans. He's telling the Democrats "Hey! Here's a shit ton of ideas I can't get through. Use them as your platform in two years!'

Expect something similar next year.

But I am curious - what did you dislike?

As far as the speech goes, it did that whole "These are bipartisan ideas that both parties can support" thing, despite the fact that many of the ideas (raising minimum wage, free community college, etc.) aren't on the Republican platform.  I have no problem with a president using the SotU as a platform for future elections, but please for the love of God don't bullshit the American public into thinking that the ideology you're spouting is moderate or centrist.

That said, if it were a Republican giving the speech and expecting Democrats to vote to end the capital gains tax or be harsher on illegal immigration I'd feel the same.

Wouldn't ancient civilizations that existed before money was created be closer to communism than capitalism?
Those were barter economies (ex: four chicken eggs for a loaf of bread).  Currency came about because a standard medium of exchange makes conducting business much easier for everyone.

In communism there is no currency.  Communists that I've spoken to say that bartering would still be a common practice (ex: I'll build you a guitar if you build me a canoe), but that profit wouldn't be a motivating factor in the exchange of goods and services.

"I don't have anymore campaigns to run."

*Republican applause*

"I know because I won both of them."

*Democrat applause*
*Republicans get BTFO*

No degree should cost 20,000 a year at a basic four year state funded school - which is the standard for most Americans today.
College tuition was pretty much in control until the government started heavily subsidizing it in 1965.

"Great Society" my ass.

I'm aware. Doesn't change my statement.
I know.  It's just that you tend to lean on the side of government action to counteract such trends, when in this case (and most others) it was government action that caused it.

Someone who decides to get up and risk their life to protect others, to fight and die for a cause they believe in, is worthy of respect in my eyes.

I was known by pretty much the entire senior class when I was in high school.  I wasn't "popular", but everyone who I got in a conversation with knew my name without me having to tell them.

Pretty sure a lot of it comes from how outspoken I was politically, and my being in the jazz band and orchestra.
