It's pretty much the equivalent of showing Jews behind a barbed wire fence and using the word "concentration".
Is it bad that reading this immediately made me imagine some orange juice brand called "Orange Jews now from Concentrate."

I have no idea how you construed my simple response into some sort of SJW crusade.
Sorry, after the first sentence I went on a tangential response to the article. Might as well take out your quote even.

The whole "they do x so they might as well do y" is one of the most annoying non-arguments I keep seeing people use in regards fiction. A fictional story that intends to be taken seriously needs to maintain suspension of disbelief. The easiest way to do it is to have the setting be derived from something familiar to the intended audience. That's the route the Witcher takes, it balances the absurdness of its fantastical elements by grounding it in the idea that "hey, this is supposed to be like medieval Poland as the pagans imagined it" thus making it easier to accept the fictional world.
Of course the mere existence of nonwhite characters in the Witcher would not break suspension of disbelief, but given the setting they would be at high risk of coming off as shoehorned in or even worse being token characters. Then there's also the reason why you don't see Aztec gods in God of War or samurai in Wolfenstein: while the developers could add them in, they don't fit in with with the setting's theme and thus I find it hardly reasonable to expect such alterations.
It goes both ways too, in settings like science fiction or modern day having diverse characters is typically what would be expected and in that case not having multiple races represented would be questionable. Same deal if was set somewhere that you wouldn't expect many white people yet all the main characters were white, that could be reasonably considered whitewashing. However covering all genres under such blanket standards is, if I may say, a toxic form of idea policing that's generally uncalled for.

In a battle of the impractical, the battletech designs are more practical.
I'm not so sure. I'm not a mech fan so I'm not too familiar with battletech or armored core, but I see far more flaws in the battletechs looking through some of their images. For starters, they all seem to share the same leg designs, with large thick limbs and circular joints. The problem with that is there appear to only be about 3-4 joints per limb, each of which bend all on the same plane. If the terrain was uneven there's no way it would be able to maintain it's balance, negating the point of even having legs. Even worse, there doesn't even seem to be any room for the joints to rotate sideways, it shouldn't even be able to turn! The armored core design is a whole different animal. First off it appears to mimic human physique, one that we know can maintain balance and uneven terrain. Sure there are a lot more moving parts but look at its stance, the legs have a good range of movement around the hip joint and the knee and ankle joints appear to be able to pivot side to side. It's a lot more complicated and less protected than the battletech legs, but at least they could actually walk.Plus they are a lot closer to the kind of machines the military is actually developing: The joints do look too small for its size but I could accept it if it's operated by artifical muscles instead of hydraulics. The only thing i don't get is why it has such long arms and hands. Those would make balancing even harder and just having guns attached directly would be much more sensible. Seriously, why does a mech need hands?

what the fuck is that anime fantasy impractical bullshit
Are you implying a bipedal mech design is ever practical?
