Serious / Re: Living with someone who is mentally ill
« on: November 07, 2014, 10:53:12 AM »
My mother is diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She takes medication for it which really mellows her out most of the time, but when she is off her meds she is incredibly irritable and prone to having tantrums.

The last one was on a trip we took together about a year ago, it was late and we were trying to find the hotel we booked, but she refused to believe me when I told her which hotel it was since she remembered it being different or something (still unsure what her reasoning was). When we went to a hotel that ended up being the wrong one she ended up throwing her car keys on the ground and punching the car radio with her fist while shouting at me, and spent a good half hour just biting her own hand before being able to drive again. She was even worse before she began taking meds at all, which didn't happen until I was in halfway through middle school.

Despite her being my only parent for most of my life, I never did learn to deal with it. After my grandma died when I was starting middle school I sincerely feared for my life because of her, and now I just avoid her even though she has gotten a lot better since she met my stepdad.

My problem with the parties is that they are fanatically devoted to achieving pretty much impossible ideals rather than actual governance. So in that regards I do see this as a potentially good thing, but it could be a very bad thing.

Serious / Re: Really though, what is wrong with feminism?
« on: October 30, 2014, 08:54:21 PM »
Lack of a specific unified set of goals.

That's something you see with a lot of movements unfortunately. Time and time again it has been shown that large groups of people simply cannot maintain cohesion without some kind of agreed upon, identifiable target (this is exactly why for example the Occupy movement faded into obscurity while the Tea Party is still prominent; one had a specific goal for people to gather around and the other tried to form its goals around its people).

First wave feminism had the unified goal of giving women suffrage, property rights and access to positions in government. Second wave feminism had the goals of giving women equal pay, equal employment, equal educational standards, maternity leave, and allow free access to contraceptives and birth control. Since these were all well-defined and achievable goals, the first two waves of feminism were incredibly successful.

Then the 'third wave' happened. With their earlier goals achieved the feminist movement fell into infighting over what to do next, particularly between pro-sex and anti-porn groups, as well as those who wanted to get involved with the LGBT movement. This leaves us with the current feminist movement, which has no cohesive goals and really seems to have devolved into little more than a broad label almost anyone in our society now could apply to themselves. These days if you are in a first-world country calling yourself a feminist really doesn't mean anything of real substance. Even I'm a feminist by the technical definition.

Serious / Re: Goldfish brain surgery
« on: October 30, 2014, 07:48:22 PM »
Is Foxnews become satirical like The Onion, or is this serious? Goldfish don't normally live 10 years, why would you spend $200 on surgery for one when a new one costs like $15?
probably because he loves his piscine companion you heartless fuck.
It's a Goldfish. It doesn't understand anything you say, you can't teach it anything, it's literally as smart as a goldfish, and how do you become so attached to a Goldfish that you'd pay $200 to keep it alive after you've grown past 10 years old? I've got a Goldfish that's around a decade old, but I'm not saving the thing when it starts dying, that thing's plenty old enough, I'm starting to worry if it'll ever die.
YOU WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND OUR LOVE!

We typically think of Goldfish as having short lives, but that's only because it is so common for people to put them in tiny bowl aquariums where they basically suffocate or get poisoned by their own excrement once they get to a certain size.

When properly taken care of they can live an average of 30+ years.
