Just to clarify, are you asking my opinion on the upcoming Unreal Tournament game or the 20 year old "Quake vs. Unreal" debate?

I'll be brief.
I've played several UT games and enjoyed them all. They're great and fun arena shooters. Yet still, Quake has always been my favorite. UT's movement just doesn't do it for me. It's much slower and feels clunky when compared to Quake which is considerably faster, smoother and more varied (<3 strafe jumping). While UT has more weapons that are typically in play, many of them come across as gimmicky and their secondary fire is pretty pointless in my opinion. Quake's weapons are the most balanced out of any game I've ever played. The core guns check all the right boxes and just work so well. You have the holy trinity of Rocket Launcher, Lightning Gun and Railgun in combination with the Shotgun, Grenade Launcher, Gauntlet, Machine Gun and Plasma Rifle. Straightforward, simple and oh so good. There was an argument to be made that UT had the better and more varied maps back in the day, but with community creations and updates (see Quake Live) that no longer holds up. Quake also had the better competitive scene after the early 2000's with its duel game mode dominating many tournaments, while UT pretty much died completely. Quake, in my opinion, is faster and more enjoyable to play and watch. UT is good, but Quake is king.
The new UT looks pretty good, but nothing has happened in ages. I played the pre-alpha (as far as my laptop let me) and it was good but nothing special. The fact that it's crowdsourced and heavily reliant on a community which has (or soon will have) access to Quake Live, Quake Champions, Reflex, Warsow, Diabotical and so on has me more than just a little skeptical about how it's going to turn out. "Yeah everything is open source and we're not doing anything new without community consensus on our forums" may seem pretty sweet at first sight, but can be very fickle, slow and just terrible. Many of these people are extreme traditionalists. Imagine if the Quake community would have had to agree on and support things like in-game currency, skins, unlocks, challenges and Champions? Yet id made the call and pushed through and now pretty much everyone is coming around and loving it. I hope it succeeds because the more competitive arena shooters drawing attention the better, but I have my doubts. The fact that it's been in pre-alpha for almost 3 years now and that it's going to be entirely F2P with a weird thing of community mods making money or whatever doesn't inspire much confidence either...

Yeah the character movement moves a little too slow in UT, they apparently had a way to move quickly by bunny slide hopping, but I think they removed it (unless they made it simpler to do) I think I disagree on the secondary fire, I think they give the weapons and alternative uses that one might find useful like shooting grenades with the flak cannon if an enemy is hiding behind a wall, or if you want to bait an opponent to chase you so use the secondary fire for the bio-rifle to place a trap etc. etc. It sucks how slow the new Unreal Tournament content is being released, and it doesn't help that the game's playerbase is dwindling to mere hundreds. It was? I've been keeping up with QC news pretty closely and never heard that before. I can't find a single source on this from before PAX and a lot of major game outlets are only jumping on it now, so I'm pretty sure this is big news.

Still, do you have any source confirming that this was known from before PAX? I can't find anything. For months, all I've heard were rumors and reports that it wouldn't be a full $60 game but rather like $40. heard nothing about it F2P until a few days ago, and I still frequent the biggest Quake forums on the internet. Quake Live was F2P with a pro subscription model back in the day, but I've never heard anything like that about Quake Champions.
I'm sorry I can't seem to find it anymore, does it matter dough? In the end everyone now knows its free to play
