Khan Academy? I don't know how advanced their content is, but it's presented in a nicely digestible way.
Lol, literally edited my OP just as you posted that.

Preferably without a steep learning curve. Need to beef up on the numbers before I take econ at university.

Stuff on calculus, differential equations, algebra, probability theory, stochastic processes and topology would be very welcome. I also have a textbook on the way, dealing with mathematics in economics specifically so I have some kind of foundation to base my development on.

And don't send me to fucking Khan Academy either, you lazy cunts.

given that we basically live in a dysteleological universe, i'm gonna need a few examples
Well, that's the thing really. Given your Schopenhauerean perspective, and my Nietzschean perspective, I doubt we'll be able to come to any agreement.

I can't really give you any solid empirical examples, but let's assume for instance that the nuclear disaster in Japan will lead to more efficient nuclear regulations, preventing a greater loss of lives in the future.

If you're not suffering, then my job is done, I'd argue. Now, just because you're not suffering, doesn't necessarily mean that you're "well"--while the absence of pain is good, the absence of pleasure isn't bad.
I'd argue the distinction can't be made.

Well-being seems like the absence of suffering; it's what drives us all the time. Every single moral advance being made is an attempt to alleviate some kind of suffering. When you totally eliminate suffering--assuming through channels other than anti-natalism--you've essentially created a kind of utopia.

This, of course, depends on how you define "suffering".

EDIT: I'd also argue that gratuitous, or dysteleological suffering, is the issue. Some suffering might actually contribute to human well-being in the long-run.

It's about doing the right thing.
Which is defined by human well-being.

Or, more correctly, the well-being of creatures with the capacity to suffer. Aristotle got a lot of things wrong, but basing ethics on eudaemonia was the thing he got absolutely correct. There is no other sane metric for ethics other than something which contributes to the well-being/flourishing/whatever term you want to use beings which the capacity to experience.

Be that either through positive contributions, or through mitigating suffering.

So if doctors are willing to legitimize death as a treatment of sorts for treatment-resistant depression, why not self-harm? What if the patient could remain alive, with symptoms acceptably mitigated (as indicated by lack of suicidal tendencies), by regular self-harm?
I'll have to think about that for a while before I can form an answer, to be honest.

If I can form an answer. Questions absolutely worth considering, though. Thanks for elaborating.

Did we learn anything from that experiment?

4239
Well I obviously don't think so, or I wouldn't have made it.
I'm afraid I don't really see the connection. There seems to be quite an obvious distinction between mutilating oneself out of mental instability and then making the decision to end your seemingly permanent suffering in a peaceful way. One causes suffering, the other relieves it. Care to elucidate your position?

Bearing in mind I don't really know whether I agree with it or not just yet.

That's weird.

I checked my inbox and read your message and Psy's (which came through like 30 seconds before I read it) and now the icon is fine. Maybe Psy sent it a while ago, and it took some time to show up in my inbox?

Just tried Firefox, same issue there.
Do you have anyone muted?
Nope, nobody.

Do you normally watch random documentaries on Youtube?
you dont?
Wikipedia articles are more my thing.

Conferences/talks are my Youtube vice.

I wonder if they would approve a right to self-harm.
That's a rather specious comparison, don't you think?

But what possible reason could you have for a decimal dice? ._.
To fuck with you.

so i should only vote for the candidate that will win, even if i disagree with their policies and positions?
You should vote for the party which is closest to you, which is not going to make it easier for the party you don't like to get in.

Just look at West Virginia in the 2014 mid-terms; colours change, yo.

4253
This is the shit I'm talking about, retard.
Challenger thinks transgenderism is a mental illness. I'm not sure I agree with him, but "fucked in the head" is not really vitriolic so much as it is politically incorrect.

And here you are calling him a retard for disagreeing with you.

His growth will begin to slow within the next 3-5 months.

By January, this'll be but a dream.
That's a damn shame because there aren't any other democrat candidates I'd consider voting for. Might have to go Green in this one.

Next January, I don't want to hear complaints for you then about the next President.
Why can't I complain? I'm not one of those bitches who doesn't vote then complains. I've voted in every election I could since 2006.

You damn well know that voting for a third party in 2016 America is essentially the same as not even voting at all. The candidates have no name recognition, no funding prowess, and no mainstream support necessary to even BREAK into the start of a true Presidential campaign.

They have a better chance, statistically, of being struck by lighting twice.
If anything, voting Green will help the Republicans get in.

Umm...it is.
The problem with the cost of college is that loans can't be filed for bankruptcy. It's pretty well established that the actual cost is insulated from students; credit constraints are virtually non-existent.

4256
Oh sorry, I forgot Meta was the Spr Srs Militia.
Pretty sure I've told you before that the issue is your hypocrisy.

I mean, it's pretty well demonstrated by the fact that you can't even defend yourself, and instead opt for more stupid smears and swipes.

Serious / Re: Bernie Sanders breaks Election Records

Ron Paul had some pretty absurd, unattainable ideas.
Like a $1 million investment in infrastructure?

Or a $15 minimum wage?

Or buying into the wage gap myth?

Or opposing free trade?

Or thinking college is unaffordable?

Or thinking banks should be broken up?

Or wanting a single-payer system?

Yeah, he's leagues ahead of Paul.

4258
I have no problem having civilized discussions with people I don't agree with. In fact, those are often the most enjoyable.

Sure thing, buddy.

4259
This is not the first time this has happened, by the way. This isn't a landmark case, so I'm not sure why this is making the news now. If anyone cares, I can elaborate on the Belgian euthanasia law. Medical law isn't my field of expertise, but I'm still more than familiar with it.
Well I'm interested in whether you think this is right?

Since I've experienced depression, I'm obviously not as biased. So it'd be nice to get the perspective of somebody in the know about the legal aspects.

4260
I still don't entirely understand how the Americans got it so wrong.
FDR, basically.
