Serious / Germany's government is getting complacent« on: September 04, 2014, 11:50:26 AM »
According to some of Germany's top business owners, the government is becoming complacent as the German economy - which has been the powerhouse of the Eurozone - is showing signs of slowing down.
Their remarks come after much-disliked policies have been enacted by the German government, including the creation of the country's first-ever minimum wage and the reduced retirement age for long-term workers. Germany's national chamber of commerce have also opposed the policies, as structural problems will only add to the issue of declining consumer confidence in Germany due to the crisis in Ukraine. This problem is also going to make the ECB's battle with low inflation all the more difficult, and increase the likelihood of quantitative easing (which should've been done a long time ago, anyway). Serious / The U.K.'s economy is stronger than first thought« on: September 03, 2014, 04:26:32 PM »
The Office for National Statistics has released a rather rare revision of real and nominal GDP growth from 1997 to 2012.
The Recession of 2008 has been made shallower, marked down from 5.2pc to 4.3pc, and removes a lot of concerns regarding weak productivity in the following years. The new information comes as the ONS tears up its previous methods of measuring the economy and instills a new system in line with international standards, and it is now considering the economic contributions of charity, the sex industry and illegal drugs. Between 2010 and 2012, real GDP growth has been revised up by 1pc. Since 2008, the level of output has been raised by 2.6pc. While the revisions venerate Osborne's economic policies as good for economic growth, there is still the cost of living crisis. How much the government can do to counteract that, however, is shrouded in ambivalence. 1838

So, essentially, I'm starting my second year of college next week. I just finished my AS (lower A-levels) levels and will be starting my A2 (higher A-levels).
For my AS results I got a D in philosophy, a B in history and an A in politics. I was thinking about taking up economics as an AS while I'm also doing my A2 subjects. My teachers seem divided about it, so I'm throwing it out to you. 1844
The Flood / I just finished a genuinely fantastic book« on: September 02, 2014, 05:39:02 PM »
I was debating whether or not to put this in Serious, but I'd like it to be here. If any mod or monitor wants to move it over to Serious, feel free.
So, it was called The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Religion and Politics by Jonathan Haidt. Essentially, the book takes a very Humean and descriptive view to how we, as individuals and groups, come to acquire moral sentiments, how those moral foundations evolve into different political beliefs and how they link to how we've been genetically programmed and culturally influenced. It also talks about how liberalism, of which Haidt is a subscriber, has a narrower moral foundation than does conservatism, and how it can lead to conservatives having the upper hand in political elections during times of perceived threat, and how they so often misunderstand each other and are driven to hostility. He also suggests considerations from each partisan group that should be adopted be liberals, libertarians and conservatives alike. It also takes a different line to the New Atheist people who describe religion, often, as a failed science with no genetic basis - like a parasitic meme. It talks about how religion makes people "better" citizens and neighbours - in terms of altruistic behaviour - and comes to the conclusion that community, not the beliefs on their own, come to dominate the motivations of those in worshipful communities to act for good or for ill. On the whole, it was a great, well-sourced and informative book. While I'm dubious to some of its claims, it's still definitely worth the read. It changed my political opinions to a degree, and even made me more sympathetic to religion. Check it out. 1845

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Navy Seals, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret raids on Al-Quaeda, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla warfare and I’m the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

Serious / What confuses me most about ISIS« on: September 02, 2014, 03:51:23 PM »
What puzzles me most is why we seem to give these people any sense of legitimacy. We treat them as a foreign military, as a political entity, as a government. They are not. We all know what happens when you have a moral system which combines tribalism and worshipful devotion. Religion isn't the problem, it's an accessory to the problem. The true problem lies in the politics. No worshipful institution, be they State or Church, should command a group for its own ends. It's like a psychopath with an army.
Our countries have stood side-by-side before in the face of tyranny, even if we did so ambivalently at time. We've stood against France in the 1800s, Germany in the 1930s-40s and again the Soviets until 1991. That was tyranny, they were threats. We aren't dealing with a rogue government here. We're dealing with a fucking mafia; thieves and murderers with principles. I think they deserve to be treated like the criminals they are, and face death for their crimes. /rant Spoiler No, I'm not condoning extreme military action against them. That normally causes more problem than they solve, but they simply must be dealt with, and I'm calling them out for what they are. 1847

Serious / The right to free speech infers a right to privacy« on: September 02, 2014, 10:38:30 AM »
Free speech is merely an extension of (or synonymous with, depending on your outlook,) the freedom of expression. One of the greatest determinants of the importance of freedom of expression is that you're able to choose that which you don't express. That's the dividing line between important expression.
Everybody I talk to doesn't seem to grasp this idea that freedom to privacy is just the necessary consequence of freedom of expression. 1850

This was under "Grassroots Democracy":
Quote Every human being deserves a say in the decisions that affect their lives and not be subject to the will of another. Therefore, we will work to increase public participation at every level of government and to ensure that our public representatives are fully accountable to the people who elect them. We will also work to create new types of political organizations which expand the process of participatory democracy by directly including citizens in the decision-making process. What the fuck? Why not just leave them alone in the first place. 1857

Just a part-time minimum-wage deal at a local supermarket. Should be able to help pay for shit for my car and various subscriptions I got going on.
So, any interview techniques? I did all right at my first ever job interview, but it really is who you know (my mom's manager played golf there), and funnily enough I know one of the supervisors at this place. Still, tips are welcome. Hopefully I don't get fired from this one. So, spit or swallow? Spoiler Yes, I'm happy about earning minimum wage.
