I like the part where a rabbit gets caught in a snare trap and blood starts pouring from his mouth.

I just watched a couple of those scenes and I'm pretty fucking traumatised.
Had no idea the film was like that.

But it seems like every season is one book. Right?
Sort of. Season 1 - A Game of Thrones Season 2 - A Clash of Kings Season 3 & 4 - A Storm of Swords Season 5 - A Feast for Crows and A Dance With Dragons Season 6 - The Winds of Winter (?) AFfC and ADwD are two separate books but their stories are happening at the same time, just following different sets of characters. It's also possible for some seasons to include content from future or past books, for example Season 5 has certain parts that may be in the next book, and Season 6 needs to play catch up on certain plotlines from previous books. However, the stories of the book and the TV show are diverging rapidly from each other and can at this point be considered completely different stories. They'll both probably have the same ending and major plot landmarks but everything in between will be mostly separate.

i've been pleasantly surprised with season 6 and super excited to finally see negan. there's still one more episode before the finale, though
This season has been pretty damn good. Only problems I've had with it are the terribly executed Glenn fakeout and the pacing, but pacing is something the show's always struggled with. The writers have 16 episodes a season to work with, I wish they'd use them better.

It's AMC so it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if they did the whole POV thing to draw the death out as long as possible.
It wouldn't surprise me, and I'm expecting it, but a cliffhanger ending still doesn't add up with what the actors are saying about it being "the darkest episode they've ever done". Andrew Lincoln said he dropped his script after reading it and didn't get any sleep because of it. Lauren Cohan, Melissa McBride, Ross Marquand and Lennie James have all said similar things, and it doesn't really make sense to say that about a cliffhanger ending. I think, or at least hope, that AMC are simply toying with the people who leak spoilers and purposefully sending out the cliffhanger.

How does this improve the quality of the show?
The shows been good from Season 4 onwards, Negan is just an incredibly entertaining antagonist.

POV image of Lucille pretty much confirms cliffhanger leak.
Hype diminishing.
It's possible the screeners were shown an unfinished episode without the death in order to avoid spoilers. Multiple versions of the scene were filmed, and the finale has an extended 90 minute cut titled "Something to Fear" that will be the one that airs. The screeners were possibly shown the 60 minute version titled "Last Day on Earth". Here's hoping, anyway.
