The junk you pick up like duct tape and steel is broken down into materials needed for the crafting systems like weapon mods, armor mods, and settlement stuff. You're gonna need a ton of duct tape if you want to craft weapon mods and so forth. You also have to level up this perk called Gun Nut to gain access to more advanced mods.
Weapons in Fallout 4 don't break so you can drop multiple versions of the same weapon unless you want to sell them for caps. You can however break down weapons at the workbench for extra junk materials needed for mods.
As for caps, there's a perk in the Luck set which lets you find more caps in nearly everything you loot. There's also side-quests for all the main factions which will allow you to make a lot of caps as well. Setting up shops in settlements will also let you get caps too.
How exactly do you break things down? I've just placed it all in the workbench but didn't see an option to turn it into scrap.
Drop it and then scrap it as you would a settlement piece.

Make sure to keep a pipe rifle on you at all times because the ammo for those things is pretty much infinite.
Also seeing as you're on Very Hard difficulty be prepared for bullet sponge enemies.

I'm just glad Bethesda haven't touched the West Coast whatsoever. Their games might as well exist in their own inconsistent continuity.
I agree. Fallout 3 may as well be a spin off game of the universe not due to the gameplay, but because there's no references to the other games. With NV there's a ton of things referencing the 2nd game and we have weapons which were used in it. NV is truly the Fallout 3 of the series.
I don't really have that much of an issue with Fallout 3. From a lore perspective it's more poor execution of decent ideas, there isn't really much that's offensive aside from Little Lamplight and making aliens canon. Should have been Brotherhood vs. Outcasts instead of Enclave but oh well.

Fallout 4 is not Fallout
I refuse to believe that it is
It's non-canon, it has to be.

nuka cola spoilers
Spoiler they fucked up x01 lore YET AGAIN Spoiler what did they do to it now
Spoiler apparently the nuka cola company SOMEHOW got their hands on a set of X01 power armour and applied a paint job to it despite the fact that x01 was developed by the fucking enclave AFTER the war
Fucking really?
people on reddit have the beta and that's what they've said
I don't understand how that breaks canon.
Spoiler The Atom Cats exist and create post-war paintjobs, it's perfectly believable that someone copied the Nuka Cola artwork (literally pasted everywhere, let alone in Nuka World) and applied it post-war to existing power armour, including X-01's. We already get Vault Tec, Abraxo Cleaner, Sugar Bomb designs and pre-war hotrod paint jobs from magazines already... why doesn't this extend to an iconic drinks company in the fallout Universe? Sounds like the lessers of the Reddit-Hive scrounging for anything to add to the hate Fallout 4 pile so they can bask in bandwagon karma.
Spoiler This Nuka-Cola X01 is from pre-war similar to the Vim power armour from Far Harbour, which is impossible. Besides, the entire concept of the Atom Cats is dumb and further highlights how Bethesda don't give a fuck about the canon. Power armour shouldn't be so accessible to the point that you have a small group make money off of painting it for people.

343i artificially inflating its population counts for damage control LOL.
I also believe in loomynarty
Halo 5 has a "high population" in a similar way to how Halo 5 had the "most successful launch".

The map was really lacking. It's bigger, yet somehow feels smaller than the CW and MW. There's nothing particularly memorable about it and the overall aesthetic doesn't really fit Fallout. Some of the buildings look pretty weird. Bethesda seems to take the whole "retrofuturism" thing way too far.
One thing I will give the map credit for though is the amount of verticality that it allows you. You don't see that in 3 or NV.
Yeah the vertical thing was fantastic, but the buildings themselves just felt so.... ew. The entire city was ew.
I feel they honestly nailed the combination of it in Fallout 3. Enough to make it feel like they wanted its own thing, but still enough to feel like Fallout to me. NV obviously felt like the older ones.
But idk, 4 was just so boring. No amazing landmarks, and aside from the Glowing Sea, I didn't really feel interested.
Yeah I thought Fallout 3 had a pretty great map. Nice atmosphere and aesthetic. There was stuff to do in the depths of the DC ruins but also a lot in the wilderness too. Plus you got cool places like Rivet City. Diamond City isn't particularly interesting.
