Boris Johnson has just been admitted to hospital for "tests". EDIT: He still has symptoms 10 days after testing positive for the virus.

Serious / Re: Keir Starmer elected leader of UK Labour Party« on: April 05, 2020, 10:05:08 AM »
I think his choice of shadow cabinet should give a good early indicator of the direction he might take Labour in. Though if he does go for a compromise route and loses the next election that'll basically guarantee that the next leader will be a full-on Blairite.
Rosena Allin-Khan seems like an obvious choice for Health Sec right now, don't know much about her positions but having an actual NHS doctor in the shadow cabinet, especially in the current crisis opposite Matt Hancock of all people, may be beneficial. Just please don't give Jess Phillips a position. EDIT: some positions coming out now Shadow Chancellor - Anneliese Dodds Foreign Secretary - Lisa Nandy Home Secretary - Nick Thomas-Symonds Cabinet Office - Rachel Reeves Health Secretary - Jon Ashworth 243

The UK government has wiped away £13.4bn of NHS debt which looks good on the surface but wouldn't have been needed if the same party hadn't spent the past decade underfunding and privatising it.

We'll have to wait and see but given people like George Osborne were endorsing him I'm not sure if this bodes well for Labour or not. Starmer seems to be favoured more by the neoliberal side of Labour but has also said he wants to maintain Labour's socialist policies to some extent. He comes from a working class background which is a plus although I'm not sure if that will be enough to win back northern working class voters who were put off by Labour's PV stance which was pushed by Starmer himself. So I guess we've either got a new leader who can bring together both the moderate and leftist wings of the Labour party or just another milquetoast Blairite. 245

Hoping the film drops on Disney+ UK soon so I can see how it holds up. Having given it some time there are things that I'm feeling more positive about and other stuff that I hate.
I still think the Sequel Trilogy as a whole gets too much flak and isn't even that much less cohesive than the Original Trilogy. The characters are definitely my favourite out of all the trilogies. 247

The Flood / Re: Oscars are now« on: February 10, 2020, 03:17:05 AM »
Toy Story 4 was great but I'm not sure if it was quite deserving of the award, especially coming after Into the Spiderverse last year. The visuals were incredible (especially the scenes in the antique store with all the dust and cobwebs) but I'd kind of expect that from a multi-million dollar franchise movie (not to brush aside the work of the animators themselves).
Jojo Rabbit's Oscar was well deserved. Kinda wanna see it again. I was hoping Knives Out would get one, (aside from it being a genuinely fantastic movie) kinda because I'm petty and it would have been the cherry on top of Star Wars nerds spending two years calling for Rian Johnson's career downfall because he made a movie they didn't like, only for his next film to be very well received and commercially successful, and now have an Oscar nomination. Haven't seen enough non-franchise films to really comment on the other awards. Didn't care for Joker enough to really think much of it winning any Oscars, though Joaquin Phoenix definitely did a good job in it. 268
