Huh, I actually agree with you.
You should, historical evidence supports this argument. Forced military service dates all the way back to the middle ages, possibly even earlier.

Oh, I agree with you there. I'm just saying that veterans don't necessarily deserve to shoulder the brunt of the blame.
War is, for the most part, manufactured by the ruling class to protect their property (edit: or to acquire more property). Soldiers usually come from the working class, and are either forced or manipulated into service.

Not seeing why you're so biased against veterans, but fair enough.

I don't give two fucks how veterans are treated, however I do give a fuck about trans rights. It's their right to be able to receive the treatment they need. The fact that sending her to prison wasn't enough, they're withholding the treatment that she needs. Makes my blood boil.
Well Manning is a veteran, so clearly you do care how at least one of them is treated. What I'm saying is, this is just the latest case in a long line of society's indifference towards the soldiers it claims to venerate. Veterans with PTSD have been ignored for years, why should veterans with gender dysphoria be treated any different?

Another veteran chewed up and spit out by the military industrial complex the minute they stopped being useful.
Sad, but not a surprise when you look at how soldiers have been treated throughout history.

I've already pointed out the main flaw: people are suffering for the sake of first world excess.
But who the fuck am I kidding, you'll just respond with the same bullshit about how they're lucky to be employed at all and look at how much their GDP is growing, or whatever. This is a system that treats human beings like expendable resources, you can recognize that or live your life in denial.
Or we could just wait another year and you'll probably come back around and agree with me again.

The consequence of exploitation is death and poverty.
They will never be allowed to develop anything close to a first world economy, because the ownership class that bribes their imperialist puppet governments don't want to lose their favourite source of cheap labour.
Paul Krugman is apologizing for imperialism, he's our own modern version of Ruyard Kipling.

Apologizing for exploitation is always going to sound stupid, regardless of the source.
Chomsky at least uses his position to try and nudge people towards genuine change.

I've heard the same basic argument before.
Paul knows what side his bread is buttered on.
109
« on: August 17, 2014, 03:08:25 PM »
Well of course Paul Krugman would right that, he's built a career out of defending capitalism.

Yes, I'm sure they love working over 80 hours for less than a dollar per hour. They should be grateful that they aren't unemployed.
Freedom is slavery, etc.

Look at the working conditions people endure in third world countries. Look at how many of them work for western corporations.
The labour movement of the early 20th century was a threat to the establishment, so we got the welfare state to pacify us.
That's the only reason we enjoy decent living conditions, because the capitalist class can't get away with the shit they pull overseas. Liberal democracy is a glorified PR campaign.

More wealth for the upper class, for everyone else things stay more or less the same.

Power will always be a good enough incentive.
Even if it were possible you can't rely on the benevolence of the ruling class, it's a group that tends to attract dysfunctional personalities.

He who controls the media controls elections.
Unless you outlaw advertising and privately-owned media outlets, that's not going to change any time soon.
Hell, even publicly owned news networks are partially dependent on advertising money, just look at the CBC.

Capitalism makes it possible for the rich to manipulate politics, it's a system designed to keep them in power.
I don't pretend to have any solutions, but I also don't pretend that the system currently in place is worth defending. Teaching people how badly the game is rigged is a good enough start, I suppose.

Still one of the leading examples of state capitalism.
Whether power is concentrated in the hands of the state or the hands of the ultra-rich, it makes little difference. They're two sides of the same coin.

>humanizing capitalism
when will they realize it's a scam? I'm not fond f Keynes either, see previous comment^ You can't generate wealth and plan it from the top-down at the same time, it doesn't work. China says hi. So long as wealth is concentrated in the hands of the highest social class, it will always be planned top-down.
