It sounds like people wanted Luke to be a plot device and not an actual character
I think SW fans wanted EU Luke, some jedi grandmaster that had a hot jedi wife and a bunch of cool jedi buddies and was now a wise old dude like Obi Wan.

I won't lie, I became a little sad that things turn out so poorly for Luke, but the character himself, and the circumstances he was in, were far more interesting than their EU counterparts set during the same time frame.
I think people's main gripe is that this version of luke is so radically different, and that the comedy(like the lightsaber tossing) appeared to be a lack of respect or reverence for the history of the character or franchise. What could've been a strong emotional moment was just slapstick.

Spoiler Holy fuck I hated how they made Luke act in this film. Sucks to also find out he never actually left the island, then he dies. Jesus Christ. I feel like the most obvious no-brainer things people expect like having luke han and leia reunite onscreen are somehow the fan service things they fuck up. Didn't happen in TFA. But it's so obvious to do that but they can do every other thing. And now Han is dead, Carrie Fisher is literally dead, and now Luke, so that's impossible now. They just need other people to make these movies, they cannot do it right.
Also was hoping they'd tone down on the jokes and make Finn less comic-relief, instead that's all he is. So I hate this character now. Worst part about this movie was Rose, she can just die.
The Snoke Throne Room scene was one of they hypest movie scenes ever to me, so there's that.

I just want the lore of and connected to KOTOR 1-2 to be canon. From what I've seen it doesn't seem to conflict with anything or create any inconsistencies, and it takes place thousands of years before the movies anyways.
Rebels has already established it's own canon regarding Malachor V, which unfortunately doesn't match how KOTOR 2 tells things.

They called it Malachor, are there literally 4 other Malachors? Also what happened there was similar-ish to KOTOR 2's story but definitely not the same
