Gaming / Re: Oh my god, the Rookie is dead!
« on: March 03, 2015, 05:11:25 PM »
Book was great IMO. Rookie decision served its purpose in the story but nullifies something great about ODST. That being said, pretty much everything else about it was great. Dialogue + character interactions/motivations in particular seem like something Staten himself would've written for ODST.

[Though this is from a quick skim]
What does the Rookie's death take away from ODST?

Player control. The Rookie was meant to be a self insert character, and unlike post Marathon Bungie's other efforts with Chief, Six, and Mr./Ms. Guardian, he was done properly. Instead of being a character himself he was a means of exercising player control within the narrative, a "focal point" if you will. Especially complements ODST's Inferno allegory [something I believe Staten paid attention to given "prepare to drop" and Destiny's main themes]. When you give him a future outside of pure reactionaries you take away the agency of the player and wrap the Rookie up in a sort of narrative determinism.

If I were to give you a simpler analogy: Shepard in the control ending to ME3. Ending's are odd, but that's not the point. In the original ending, we just get an instant cutaway. We don't know what happened outside of Shepard gaining control. The path that Shepard takes isn't detailed, so there's no "determined" action that he takes, i.e. anything is possible. Post EC? Shepard is disconnected from player input and goes on some paragon/renegade based galactic tidy up + policing job. Same thing with Rookie over there.

I'm not saying it ruins ODST or anything [or even makes it worse in a big way], but that it takes away an interesting part of the narrative from a metaphysical POV. The death serves its purpose in the story and I'm not mad [especially given 343's approach of attempting to contextualize everything, I should've expected this the second Chief's personality was realized].

whatever the heck you just tried to say============>

This thread is meant to be optimistic and yet it's rather depressing now, is it not?
Listen mister passive aggressive, life is shit. It kicks you when you're down and and not up to you if it's going to stop or not. The only thing that's up to you is if and how you decide to keep pushing through. Yeah, money isn't everything. But it's certainly something, and something essential. Because without it, life is even harder and in many cases more miserable.

Everything you know and love can be gone in an instant. It doesn't matter how rich or poor you are, or how hard you try to stop it. And all you can do is pick up the crumbling pieces and keep crawling forward, hoping you don't get stomped on while you're still recovering.
Understanding the inevitability of suffering doesn't mean you can't live for happiness, nor does it make wallowing in that suffering the least bit helpful in regards to ending it.

I'm sorry if I struck a nerve. I was simply making an observation. My life isn't pretty either.
Happiness doesn't last, friendo. All good things come to an end.
If you have something that keeps you happy, enjoy it while you can. It's not really that you struck a nerve, it's that you on occasion seem to feel the need to come in towards me with some passive aggressive quirk.

Again, the only thing that matters is how you choose to move forward after something is lost.

That wasn't directed at you in particular, it was about the thread in general.
There are 3-4 users that are giving off the same vibe in here.

He's not making a remark at you.
It's not the first time it's happened and it's always rather indirect. That's why it's passive.

And you can prove that its passive aggressive towards you in particular?

But if that's the case, what's the whole point in Jesus' sacrifice? If Jesus' death on the cross doesn't absolve us of our sins, why is "Jesus died for your sins" perpetuated?

It would seem that if you removed Jesus' death entirely, the end result would still be the same - having to answer for your sins on judgement day.
I'm guessing Jesus was the physical embodiment of God's love--his dying on the cross an expression of the lengths of said love.  All God wants in the end is for us to acknowledge this and accept it.

Assuming God is real.

Nailed it.

Romans 5:8 "But God demonstrates His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
But if Jesus' sacrifice didn't absolve us of our sins, what was the point in his sacrifice?

It does, but only if you accept Christ as savior. It's a gift you have the choice of accepting or rejecting. then your sins are removed, but you aren't a perfect sinless being then. You need to walk with Christ, be made clean daily, pursue a relationship with Him. Because the more you fellowship like Christ, the more you become like Him.
...and that's what we call a condition.

That's not a condition. The cleansing of sin was not automatically handed out. It is given to those who want it.
Not a condition, but a choice.

Is there a condition to get to Heaven? Yeah, accept a free gift.(which is hardly a condition at all since its so easy to acquire)
But God's love does not have a condition.

Accepting Christ as Savior is all you need. That's it.
But then God's love isn't unconditional. If you need to accept Jesus as your lord and savior, that's a condition to not get banished to the depths of hell for eternity.

God's unconditional love is demonstrated in the fact He gave you the opportunity for redemption, and also allows you to choose freely to accept or reject it. Sin isn't just sweeped under the rug, but He's given you all you need to free yourself from it.

It's all up to you.
Doesn't seem like he's actually giving you much of a choice.

Ah but you see, worshipping God only so you can get into Heaven? That won't work because of this verse here:

Quote
1 Corinthians 13

13 If I speak in the tongues[a] of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

God wants you to worship Him because you love Him, not because you want to escape Hellfire.
And guess what? God would rather you be a non-believer than a lukewarm Christian.

Quote
Revelation 3:15-16

"I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!
So, because you are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth."

Think about that. God dislikes fake Christians more than non-believers. If dislike is even the proper word, I don't think it is. He wants us to be real with Him, not fakers who fulfill an image to get to Heaven.

Good works will not save you.
Christ alone can do that.
