The standard model that Tesla is going with is that at night you'll trickle-charge for several hours. They already have a device that can fully charge the car in 30 minutes, and they're working on a charger that will charge the entire battery in only a few minutes, comparable to filling a tank of gas.
That's a lot faster than I imagined, but is they really wanted to get massive support I think just switching the batteries at a station would be superior, and then you wouldn't need to replace your own batteries every three years or so.
Sharing batteries, that's an interesting idea. Aren't they huge and unwieldy though?

Good general rule of thumb. 1/2 an inch of lead can stop about 1/2 of the gamma photons(the radiation that poses the most threat) that intersect it. It takes another 1/2 inch to stop 1/2 of that. Takes about 2 1/2 inches of concrete to do the same. Any material can serve this purpose, the only thing that matters is it's density(ie. the less dense, the more you need) http://physics.stackexchange.com/questions/74069/what-is-the-halving-thickness-of-diferent-materials-against-high-energy-gamma-raIt's by no means an exact rule but it's a decent approximation that will give you more than enough protection. While this means it is impossible to stop all of it you can get the amount that escapes down to levels near the background radiation, at which point it's piss in a bucket. Alpha particles can be stopped by a sheet of paper, beta by a sheet of aluminum, and free neutrons can be stopped more than adequately by whatever shields gamma photons.
