Like occasionally when I haven't done anything productive in a while. I'll just get up to piss and all of a sudden just be like, "the fuck?"

Which for usesless liberal arts major did you pick?
Does it matter? And I guess they're not entirely useless if you have a direction in mind with them, ex. Psychology major wanting to be a therapist, etc... But I chose History, mainly because it was easy, and I failed math in high school, which is another story entirely. It is just as useless as Art History and English, maybe even more useless.
Yes.
Basically I've always wanted to do something with computers and technology, but I've never had the math skills to do it.
Everyone claims to be bad at math. I don't buy it, I don't think you guys give yourselves a chance. Could just be bias though.

I independently came up w/ an interpretation of quantum mechanics(as in that was the way in which it made the most sense to me) that is analogous to Wojciech Zurek's quantum darwinism so while not totally original I had the basics in my brain before I read the paper.

Ah yes, Wabbajack Zurg's quantum druidism.

Hmm, I wouldn't write off the possibility of the DNA introduced to the pool being in some way connected to the genesis of life on that planet.

A similar theory about Comets/asteroids and dna/bacteria being brought to other planets (Panspermia IIRC) exists >.>

However, the chances of life evolving to mimic humans would be slim to none. Since the unique pressures of life on that other planet would likely give rise to a fundamentally different ecosystem, even if it was in the goldilocks zone.
So there might be some similarities, but when evolution takes over from biogenesis/abiogenesis things run a more unpredictable path <.<

That is, unless life tends to follow a template through some undiscovered universal laws >_>
But we'd have to find another terran style world with a fully developed ecosystem and life to be able to start drawing conclusions like that >.>
I wouldn't be very surprised if life was constrained in certain ways if due to nothing other than physics. One could imagine physical bottlenecks instead of genetic ones we're familiar with. Perhaps convergent evolution on a larger scale.
How boring would it be though, if the universe was just stuffed full of bloody humanoids ._______.
I don't think it would be quite that constrained but a species of intelligent tool users would need to have developed certain similarities to humans. Grasping limbs, whether that be arms with hands or tentacles, the ability to estimate ballistic trajectories which we probably developed when our ancestors lived in trees, etc.

I'm no biologist of course but it makes sense to me.

I have my own reservations about other intelligent life, at least any where near us.

Impossible to enforce. Too easily abused for underlying motives if actually possible.

Easy alternative, genetic engineering and procreative beneficence.

As far as the dark thoughts go. . .

Of what virtue is nonviolence if one does not have the capacity for violence?

Also, the whole "born to early thing", I accept full well that i may have been born to early for a lot of things. That's why I'm going into such a field where hopefully I'll be able to devote my life to ensuring those things happen, if not for me then for those that follow.

The Flood / Re: Space Exploration
« on: December 09, 2014, 08:46:47 PM »
When the big space expansion push happens, if it ever does, things will be messy. We'll be too busy fighting with ourselves to even worry about other life forms.
Let's just say that Earth's nation-states united under one banner (a more effective and powerful UN) and started expanding. What then?

Multiple planets mean new empires. Planets with different conditions and a few generations means Human adaptability, which means new variations of the species.

Look at the moon for example. I few generations of Humans born there, and adapted to the moon, would be radically different from their earth counterparts.

The moon, being so different, would have different values on things, such as minerals in abundance or no abundance. Water. Power.  Earth would lose control if we had multiple planets. It couldn't keep an active grip on so many variations of the species, with different needs, likely different cultures as a result of their homeworld and separation.

Here's the deal. We're going to expand. And we're going to fall apart. But not in the decimation sense. We're going to spread like seeds. Each one, a different outcome. Every world, a different value, different culture, potentially different variation of species based on gravity, starlight exposure, radiation exposure, and overall mineral content. New skin tones, birth traits, physical traits, and appearance.

There will never be central control. I would have to be allies. Allied worlds under a banner of a common interest or goal. Because Earth wouldn't have the power to back itself.

"Okay, you guys bend over for the homeworld or we cut you off."

"K. You don't get our imports and trade then."

Knowing Humanity, our expansion will be messy. Like a shotgun.
Variation is the word. Not only physiologically but philosophically, politically, socially. . .

Such diffuse populations will be safe from domination of a single thought pattern/philosophy/ideology.  It will be beautiful.

Barring a feasible apparent FTL scheme, if we want to do it the more consistent way we use the available resources to build initial habitats and set up primary supply lines, it's going to be a slow methodical expansion from the central point of our solar system with a few initial wave consisting of von Neumann probes leaving our solar system.

If you're looking to colonize other solar systems right away it'd be more of a "trickle" where populations are moved using generation ships which would require the same technology that it does to build our habitats. This may not seem preferential when compared to the above method but a more diffuse species is a more variable species, not only when it comes to biology, but also philosophy, politics, etc. If you're looking for more variation in thought among other things you may prefer this method.
