I'm trying to keep them fairly minimalist, so I don't really want to make them too complicated.

This has less to do w/ global overpopulation and more to w/ social behavior in high pop density areas ( cities).
If one looks you can find certain similar symptoms in high density areas, crime rates, sexual behaviors etc. However they're not as severe as the mice/ at experiments, why? Humans are innovative much more so than rodents. Humans are also a terribly large amount more aware of their social environment.
The research was well done and provided incite into high pop density behaviors but the doomsday cult founded around it was entirely untenable.
