Couple times. I think the worst part was is that I had to do it to myself once I realized how things were.

Serious / Re: Death in the family...
« on: September 19, 2016, 12:10:46 AM »
I've been around a fair number of people who've gone up and died. Some were family, others were close friends. Some where people I knew on a regular basis.

I cried for a time and continued about with what I had to do. I can understand the empty feeling that never quite leaves you in their absence. Some people have that effect on you. But then I realize that I don't have to dwell on thier absence alone. I've got the memories of time spent with them.

In some situations, some days, I'd ask myself, "what would this person do or say?" I know them well enough to remember their mannerisms and personality. I imagine what they would do at the present moment alongside me. It gives me some measure of comfort and humor.

The Flood / Re: i've been thinking a bit about friendship lately.
« on: September 18, 2016, 11:57:49 PM »
Never saw friendship as being a set of rules set in stone. Friendship comes and goes and can change so quickly. Why apply an absolute constant to what could be a quickly changing dynamic at any given time?

I remember a discussion like this held some time back. My answer is still the same. I view being a friend in the manner that I'd wish myself to be treated. If I'm doing something that's overly harmful to myself or others around me, I'd expect a friend to step in and knock some sense into me based on their discretion and judgement.

There are some things you overlook in friendships, because you can't change people no matter how hard you try on that particular subject. And for other things, you put your foot down.

It's important to be flexible, not rigid.

But Desty, what if I made it my job to be an extra in the background of other people's lives?

906
That was an entertaining read. Thanks.

Take a page out of Das's book.

Just cause it's dead doesn't mean you can't fuck it.

Serious / Re: Judges attempt to block oil pipeline
« on: September 11, 2016, 12:14:35 AM »
Oil company being a sack of potatoes, big surprise there.

There was an oil fuckup in my province a month or so back, related to a pipeline. It got hushed up big time. The pipeline leaked for 14 hours into one of my province's major rivers and the company didn't notify anybody for at least a day and a half. The resulting contamination completely shut down an entire city's water supply for about three weeks and spread further into the smaller rivers.

I've heard that some of the natives haven't exactly been the most peaceful in their protests for that particular line down in the states, but, can you really blame them? They've been fucked around for long enough.

I've never really taken insults to heart, whether they be aimed my way or I just overhear conversation, but I wouldn't neccessarily call it appropriate.

But, it's a sure thing that when kids discover the magic taboo of swearing, no matter how much you're against it as a parent or a person, you can't really stop them from saying what they feel like once you're not on the premises.

I don't believe we've met. It's good to see you back though.

I think you were around before I dropped off the grid for a while there. Never really got a chance to talk much.

The Flood / Re: Arguments for and against incest
« on: September 02, 2016, 07:48:32 PM »
I don't really care.

Although the problem with incest is that most families who practice it are missing a few screws. And the mutant hellspawn that inevitably come with that are a thing too.

Again, that's only the result of incest that was caught and broadcasted. I bet there's people out there that practice it but don't have hellspawn offspring or are missing too many screws. We only ever see the bad stuff.

Humanity hasn't grown out of tribalism yet. For a globalist society to exist, we need to ditch the idea of our tribes
This is precisely wrong.

Tribalism will be the only thing keeping humanity unified by the time it becomes a spacefaring species.

The concept itself has to be discarded. Otherwise we'll start shooting the second we make first contact.

Ladies and gentlemen, a créme de la créme example of the slippery slope fallacy.

No, we won't. Why? Because aliens aren't human. The concept of tribalism doesn't apply.

Look at nearly EVERY example of fiction we have. If we can't see that we have no tribe, then it's nearly always us vs them.

Where did this very forum come from?

A little game called Halo. Which it the quintessential us vs them story

Yeah but in Halo it was aliens that shot first because they were religious nutjobs. Bad example for your point.

If we want to get super technical here, Lighter Than Some wasn't a religious nutjob.

He was just trying to save his pal from an angry alien attack.

The human condition has to change.

It won't change. And that's why I'm convinced we'll be wiped out in a century. Stopping a human from being human is impossible. We aren't perfect beings and have limitations.

Best course of action would be to replace us all with robots that aren't bound to primitive things. But that's not possible, either.

Seems like we're pretty much screwed.

That's why I said we have to. We can't even wrap our heads around global issues. How can we handle interstellar ones?

There has to be a paradigm shift in how we view ourselves before we're ready to venture out to the stars

The sad thing is, it's not gonna happen. It can't work by any stretch of the imagination.

We're still too early to call anything about what the future will turn out to be. As of right now, globalism is a concept that can't work due to where we sit at as a species in terms of evolution.

But, in a couple centuries and with some lucky dice rolls, who can really say.

Takes more than centuries for natural evolution to become noticeable. And we have about a century left.

You're not counting on the factor that technology is a natural branch and extension of evolution, in which case, "natural" evolution moves painfully slowly in comparison.

With advanced enough technology and knowledge we might be able to do in centuries what took hundreds of thousands of years for natural evolution to shape us into.

The code's all there in our genetics. We just don't know how to play with it well enough yet.

Thank god I don't live in either of those countries. But then again. Europe is more fucked than the US is with the refugees. At least I'm behind a buffer in a 99% white nation.

I'd say move to Canada and just skip voting for either one of those shit stains but that wouldn't go so well. If the states go belly up into bullshit then Canada will just get dragged down with them.

Hang on here... fiction isn't reality.

Science fiction is where we see ourselves in the future and our hopes of how we'll do.

Look into Roddenberry's vision of Star Trek if you doubt the meaning of Sci Fi

See, the thing is, our predictions of the future based on fiction tend to be not very accurate.

Look at how people in 1899 thought the year 2000 would be like:

And yet, the idea still holds sway. We've got jetpacks but they aren't very energy efficient or cost effective yet. But, for the fun of it, let's say we modernize this picture as if we're we're imagining it 100 years from now.

You'd probably have firefighters in powered exo suits and the like. Fiction isn't a direct link to reality. But you can't deny that fiction has roots and inspirations from reality, and therefore, one day, this picture might become a reality, albiet one the artist a few hundred years ago couldn't imagine beyond their levels of technology.

The same applies to us in our current age. In some funny way, your example may have been a poor choice, because what's illustrated in the picture still hasn't happened yet, as we don't have the feasible tech to grant more mobility to firemen just yet.

I've heard the stories from both sides. People can be dicks. I never understood why, when a relationship was failing, that somebody on either side chooses to do something shitty like that. It happens a lot.

And to make it worse, the courts like to fuck everything up for whoever is on the bad end of the deal by forcing them to part with 50% of their belongings.

I talked to a guy who got divorced. He did something interesting. Instead of beating the shit out of the guy boning his wife, and going through all the hassle of court bullshit, he grabbed a pack and walked out the door on the same night and just left everything.
