Eh. I'm still not impressed or consider it a groundbreaking discovery.

Then again, space and such was never really an interest to me.
Just wait for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to be launched in 2018 (hopefully, they keep pushing the date back). I learned more about that in class today and THAT shit has me excited. It's gonna be able to see so far out into the universe, along with offering an INSANE amount of resolution. Main goal is to see how galaxy's and planets form. Hubble's glass scope is 2.5 (6?) meters I believe. JWST is 6 times that size I think.

It's going much further than Hubble is too. Figured I'd make this post to make you have something to actually look forward to. It's just exciting to me to know we're launching new advanced tech into space so far out, as opposed to Hubble which is almost 30 years old. That's ancient.
james webb isnt guaranteed to find exoplanets, a follow up space telescope almost like hubble will do the work. according to a guy that spoke at my uni a week ago.

I never understand the appeal and public joy in finding such discoveries.
it reinforces the fact we may not be alone in the universe and we can explore new places in space. but i also partially blame nasa for blowing things out of proportion like they did with the mars "discovery" a while back

I mean, is it really a surprise anymore that there are other planets with a similar size and such as Earth? It was cool the first half a dozen times, now it's no more surprising of a discovery than some new fish in the ocean.

Let me know when we actually find something new or get people onto another planet though.
It's more so the fact it is so close. Only 40 light years away. That's basically in our own backyard. It'll allow us to study these planets and see things such as that, and though we speculate through pure statistics that life has to exist on other planets, it's an entirely different factor when you actually have concrete evidence it, along with water on said planets, exists.
o didnt see this too

the thing that most, i think, is what makes this huge news is that the system is about what, 40ly away from us and that theres a bunch of planets that orbiting it. we cant really see planets this small in other solar systems besides ones the size of jupiter because theyre so hot. its remarkable because something so close has potentially habitable worlds that are about our planet's size and theres plenty of them.

the fuck have you been learning? its fucking neat.
There's a lot of number-crunching, which just isn't my forte. Calculating star positions and shit with formulas is a slog.

Spectroscopy sucks balls.

also, im on my first day of being vegetarian. its weird.
Cool, what's your motivation?
i agree the formula shit for star positions is ass, but software makes it so we dont need to convert from alt-az to dec / ra. the formulas are easy as balls to understand.

but im doing it just to do it. see how i change in the month with my body. its only gonna be for a month tho. its not something id do for an extended period of time.

Why is astronomy the best science
I like physics, but astronomy is just so fucking boring.

ok ill give it to you, spectroscopy portion of astronomy is ass, also the telescope part, but the rest is legit.

yo just want to let you know there's no report button, no mute button, no block button in real life. I want to see your glance as I smash your skull into the fucking concrete, and I strangle the life out of you, pushing my thumbs into their eye sockets until you cry blood lol. well, not before forcing you to watch their beloved ones die in front of you.

The Flood / Re: Learning coding / programming
« on: February 09, 2017, 08:51:00 PM »
i dont know why you need any programming considering what you do. but im biased in my recommendations; matlab and python. java i guess, but i fucking hate java
My area of expertise is ICT (information and communications technology) law. It comprises everything in law related to data protection and privacy, software licenses / ToS, media and telecoms, cybercrime and cybersecurity (spam, hacking, DDoS attacks), data retention and mass surveillance, internet of things / AI / self-driving vehicles / drones, law enforcement and criminal investigations / procedure (network searches, crawlers, darkweb), encryption, human rights online (censorship, hate speech), net neutrality and so on.

Because of this I interact with programmers and engineers on a very regular basis. And as is often the case, we're considered the "bad guys" limiting what they can do. Communicating legal requirements to programmers and getting them to comply is often a major pain. I'm already reasonably well versed in the basics of IT systems and how computer programs work, but knowing more would help me understand "the technical partners" and their approach better as well as letting me get through to them more easily at the technical level. It's absolutely no necessity and I'm good at what I do as it is, but I think this could still help me in some cases.

For example, I was recently present at a high level workshop on Cloud computing and encryption. Five minutes into the first presentation and I was lost staring at slides full of mathematical formulas and code. Now I wasn't expected to understand this nor was it important (I don't think anyone on this forum save for maybe Turkey (?) would have any clue of what was going on), but it's the kind of stuff that makes me want to be more knowledgable on the technical and mathematical side of this.
well id recommend a course about logic to go with programming. programming is essentially making commands and understanding why and how they work. its really simple doing programming on paper, but yea, take java or C.
