Pip is just ignorant on the subject, doing missions like this to Jupiter or other celestial bodies does help us indirectly and directly. We gain knowledge of our neighborhood, understand technology to survive in harsh environments for future missions, and develop some tech to travel space. I don't expect him to learn about everything space, but we're trying to give him am open mind in this subject. Yes, it makes sense he thinks it's a waste of time, but helping him understand the benefits of this is good.
